SECONDLY- If you're missing tracks, ideally buy them from itunes, or the message board has most of them, if not I'm sure someone will be glad to help you out, but please don't ask me.
Well, my (pretty much) favourite, and by far most played (1 Elle Milano- 2568, 2 Sunset Rubdown- 863) band of the past four years or so have split. Personally I think they are extraordinarily underrated & had nowhere near enough success & attention as they deserved. I like to think they will have some of this post-humously, but 'The Curse of Elle Milano' makes that unlikely.
I first heard Elle at school when a friend (Lucy), gave me a mix CD back in 2004 with the early demos- Swearing's For Art Students, Sunshine In Happyland, Busy Busy Busy, All American & a few others on it. I fell in love, joined the forum (the first of three I believe) & downloaded from there. I was totally musically uneducated then (not that I am now!), having previously pretty much listened to what was on the radio and what my friends liked (R&B, pop, mainstream rock) & Elle Milano were one of a handful bands who set me on my way.
I was ridiculously excited the when I first went to see them at the Sussex Arts Centre where they supported Quintron & Miss Pussycat & still have the poster on my wall in my room at my mum's. A few other gigs followed, Lucy & I went to London, Guilford & Reading to see them as at that time they weren't doing many gigs in Brighton, where I'm from. Anyway, the point is I have a lot of (mostly drunken) memories from these gigs.
Singles, tshirts, EPs were released & bought & we all waited for an album...
In December I went to a gig in London with Joe, another Elle fan I'd met a couple of times before that. We paid about a tenner to get in & were pretty much the only people there. Which was worrying. BUT it turned out to be our first 'date' if you like & we're together now, so there's another thing Elle did for me.
In April 2008 (I think..) the album, Acres Of Dead Space Cadets was released, I was in Asia at the time, & although I had heard most of the songs before (I was luckily enough to get the demos before most people) I was desperate to hear it & refused to download the leak. Luckily my boyfriend came to the rescue & I listened to it for the first time in a hotel room in Bangkok. I was also very pleased to see I had not one but two thanks in the cover.
I have to say, to this day I much prefer the demo versions but it is a VERY VERY good album & I would urge anyone who hasn't heard it to BUY it (hypocritical of me, I'm a serial music pirate with every band other than Elle Milano) & listen to it.
Elle Milano have been compared to too many bands to list but none of these comparisons ring true to me. I just don't think they sound, sorry, sounded, like anyone else around.
Lyrically, they are fantastic. Although often obscure, they make sense. Elle's songs manage to be both clever and beautiful. Some of my favourites:
"Stop throwing your mind at the furniture, start throwing it at me"
"colours bleed into a thousand shades now. Thursday's child is all grown up and she's trying to get laid. I stole my accent from magazines I read, and write these things about all the things you said. I'm not growing my hair for the sake of it, I'm doing it for you. I'm just clawing at crowds for the sympathy, I'll give you packaged misery, misery."
- basically the entirity of Showroom Furniture, one of my all time favourite songs.
"You sigh, but then you say that, "I'll give it all to charity, give it all to charity. I want to be a good person, I'll earn my place in heaven.""
- Good People Go To Heaven aka And The Good People Will Go To Heaven aka many other...
"killing time setting my watch to the pulse outside,
Get tired hanging from piano wires & soap repeats"
"This is predictable
Like my dreams and fears
And I'll repeat myself for lack of big ideas"- The Great Gulf
"Im sorry for being so middle class
spoilt little me ive got my head up my own ass
you've got your toys and ive got mine,
you keep your ak-47 ill keep my 4xWheel drive"- Swearing's For Art Students
"telephone wires round your arms and your anklels, you'll never get ahead till you give good head now
"- Girl Scout Up Late Doing Her Homework
"Maybe, you can have it all, just maybe. Maybe, when our dead stars collide. But until the end I'm filling in the gap."
- Chess Tragedy aka Oh! What A Tragedy
"I've been labouring nine-to-five,
my E's and my ciggies will keep me alive.
I'm a genius, that's my secret, we can jive to grind-core, and my soul you can keep it.
You can keep it.
Oooh, ska punk hour is coming our way, I'll dance like a twat because I might just be gay.
I'd rather burn my face off than smell you rot,
but no one needs a conscience when you're sucking the cock."- Believe Your Own Hype Always
Okay, I'll stop there because I'm getting carried away.
The last Elle gig I went to was back in June, when I got back from travelling. I was absolutely wasted, which I regret because now I can't remember the last Elle gig I will ever go to!
Anyway, I think Elle Milano fans all knew what was coming what with the album not doing quite as well as we hoped, lack of new material & cancellation of tour dates, & I think there are a lot of people who thought Elle were as big a deal as I did...
But! Adam aka Kobe Winona (remember the stage names? Je Suisse, Betty K, Mimi Suziki, Betty Swollocks for a few days...) has said that his work on his side project Entrepreneurs will continue, which is definitely good news. & of course I wish all the band members success in whatever they do blah blah blah.
Okay enough of my appalling sentimental crap.. back to uni work.
Just... A list of all the Elle songs I have, favourite to least.
