2012 Year Review: Gigs

January:

A Winged Victory for the Sullen w/ Sleepingdog at Cecil Sharp House
A cold January evening in a long queue outside while inside saw warm sounds emanating from piano and guitar.

Skepticism w/ Pantheist at St. Giles in the Field
A UK debut for Finnish doom metal pioneers, Skepticism, along with Pantheist, a double bill of funeral doom metal. A tour-de-force of crushing metal.

February

Chrysta Bell at Bush Hall
Sultry sexy and succulent and a wonderful cover of Sycamore Tree featured on the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me soundtrack..

March

Earth w/ Mount Eerie & Ô Paon at Union Chapel
Odd bill featuring the once hugely influential Seattle rock band, here stripped down to a slow and evolving instrumental soundtrack to a western. Sparse and elongated sounds reaching a truly beautiful climax mid-way through the last song.

April

Charlemagne Palestine w/ Oren Ambarchi at Cafe Oto
The giant of piano here already playing long before the doors opened. Joined by Oren for a jaunting and eclectic performance.

The Sinking of the Titanic at Barbican
Anniversary of the sinking, sublime crackle and sea-sick from turntable maestro Philip Jeck overshadowed the entire ensemble.

May

Undersmile w/ Serpent Venom & Ishmael at The Unicorn
Slow, doom from the underrated Serpent Venom, headliners were more style than substance.

July

Neneh Cherry & The Thing at Village Underground
A UK first for the collaborative jazz band and pop icon Neneh Cherry, fusing wailing and screaming into cover versions of alternative songs.

September

Om w/ King Midas Sound at Scala
The bass from King Midas Sound overpowered anything I've ever heard at a gig. Om were joined by Lichens for a subdued rock jam.

October

Rangda w/ Carlton Melton at Corsica Studios
Shimmering, pretty and spaced out Carlton Melton rock the small audience when they erupt into a impromptu jam. Rangda simply excel at rock with absolutely no vocals needed.

December

Stars of the Lid at St John-at-Hackney Church
Magical end to a start staring Adam from A Winged Victory for the Sullen, here with a string section and Brian McBride, Stars of the Lid here combine hypnotic with the magical.
