  • The best albums of our times.. part 1

    Set 18 2007, 13h32

My post will be somehow long i guess since i have plan to write down all the best albums i ever heard and it will probably be the best way for you to imagine what i am listening to mostly.
I'm sure i will forget about at least few important albums but i'm gonna try;p
    Here are the polish ones:

    Kult - Spokojnie - 1988:
I think it's the best of kult/kazik/knz etc ever made. It's not heavy at all and got a few really kickass songs. Highlights: whole fuckin album (re-release version with Czarne Słońca owns even more than original).

    Kaliber 44 - Księga tajemnicza. Prolog - 1996:
I'd not lie if i said that this i probably the most 'kvlt' polish hip-hop/rap release. Seriously flawless, excellent lyrics, beats made with amiga afair and 3 of like 5-6 best polish mc's. As called - psychorap - it's not a kind of yo nigga sup im gonna shot you with my gun etc ;p

    Paktofonika - Kinematografia - 2000:
Second and also great polish hip-hop album. Nearly without any worse songs. Highlights: Chwile Ulotne, Nie Ma Mnie Dla Nikogo, Jestem Bogiem, Powierzchnie Tnące and many more.

    KSU - Pod Prad - 1988:
In my opinion the best polish punk album. It's simple, raw and about drinking cheap wine etc. Life. Pretty raw production but for me it doesn't mean anything bad. Standouts: Wielki koniec, Umarle drzewa, Jabol punk, Jabolowe ofiary, Na krawedzi snu... Well, the whole album is more than good.

    Grammatik - Światła miasta - 2000:
Rap again. It's not as good as the 2 two previous hh albums but i also enjoy this one very much. It's a bit more lyrical rap than K44 and PFK and although i don't share all of their views it's really entertaining when sitting alone for the whole night and playing solitaire (!)

    WWO - We własnej osobie:
Sokol owns and thats his best. Lyrics are fun or serious (i guess that they arent fun in a purpose but anyway it's good as a quote mine and i can listen to it again and again. The best polish rap release since 2000.

    Kaliber 44 - 3:44 - 2000:
One of the hh best albums made for smoking weed/cruising. 3rd full lenght from K44. It's just as good as possible (despite WSZ/CNE, however they're funny). Good lyrics (sometimes very good -> Garbaty aniol) and a touch of fun connected with smoking a lot. The shit.

    Now it's time for non-polish top X:

    Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia - 1995:
Definitely the best symphonic black metal release ever made. Saying it's perfect is not enough. The title, which means Harsh Winter Symphony is telling enough about this release. It contains great clean vocals and not worse growls/shrieks from Garm, probably one of the best vocalists of our times, remarkable guitar riffs and outstanding drumming (no wonder why Hellhammer is a drumming legend of whole black metal scene) and of course great keyboards. Every song here is eminent. A kind of quite experimental stuff (for example vocal lines on Whence & Whither Goest the Wind are placed backwards and it really sounds like a wind blowing.

    Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale - 1997:
The first non-black metal release from Arcturus. They changed style to more avant-garde. Style changed, genius - not. The album is just brilliant. The best track here is probably TocarAlone with E. A. Poe's lyrics, grotesque Chaos Path and cosmic TocarAd Astra but as on the previous release, all of the songs are splendid. A must-hear album even if you aren't into metal.

    Tiamat - Wildhoney - 1994:
Delicious. The whole album sounds like one song due to great interludes. The songs here sound differently though the whole album is extremely compact. Great musicianship, song composition and vocal lines. Ownage, i'd say. Also, one of the best guitar riffs ever made can be heard in TocarWhatever That Hurts.

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans - 1993:
An absolute doom metal classic. The most remarkable album for doom metal ever made in my opinion. Quite depressive stuff with heavy riffs, lamenting violins and stuff like that. Grief, desire, disappointment, oblivion. I had watched the snowall day. Falling. It never lets up. All day falling. I lifted my voice and wept out loud,"So this is life?". - says it all.

My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River - 1995:
The release that followed Turn Loose the Swans. Same shit again, the main difference is no growling vocals contained at the release. Slow tempos, violins, melodic bass lines etc. Best tracks: TocarTwo Winters Only, TocarThe Cry of Mankind, TocarA Sea to Suffer In tho all of the tracks own badly.

My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light - 2004:
Let's start from the disadvantages. Sucky cover art and the song Blue Lotus. Now let's move to the reason why i find this album perfect. This is the first MDB album i ever heard and, to be honest one of top 5 albums i've ever heard. It changed a lot my musical preferences, i've listened to some of the songs from this album around one thousand times. The best of the best: Catherine blake dedicated to William's Blake bride with incredible lyrics.
Catherine Blake slept finally in the
    Summer night. In the heat.
She murmured gently, and moved smoothly,
This way and that. Oh, the beauty.
    Her luscious eyes, delicate fingers,
    Clawed at her sodden bed.
Catherine smiled. Took a fabulous breath
Of summer air and tasted death.

Also, Prize of Beauty, TocarMy Wine in Silence, TocarThe Wreckage of My Flesh.

Katatonia - Dance Of December Souls - 1993:
Another doom metal classic. This time it's Doom/black.
    I raise my fist
    To the sky
Swear the Ancient oath of Black
    The lambs shall bleed
    Eternally bleed
God is Dead and shall forever be

Riffs++, haunting vocals, sadness, pain and anger. On short: doom metal at it's best.

Until Death Overtakes Me - Prelude to Monolith - 2003:
It may sound funny but it's funeral doom ambient, the best ever made ofc. It's only 5 songs with average lenght around 18 minutes each. Monolith is a keyword here. It is monotonous (in a non-boring way). Motherfuckin slow tempo, keyboard based, epic melodies. Highlights: 2 first tracks, TocarPrelude to Monolith and TocarMissing. If you aren't openminded if it comes to music, don't listen to this, it will be too fuckin slow for you.

    Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design - 2001:
If there is any avant-garde album that is nearly as good as Arcturus' La Masquerade Infernale it's this one. This album is supposed to be a horror movie soundtrack with not less that 61 short tracks but of course, the movie doesn't exist. That's not a big problem since if there were one it wouldn't be worth that kind of soundtrack. A lot of references to classic movie themes such as Basil Poledrouis' music theme from the first Conan and many more. It is a mix of many music genres but somehow it doesn't sound not compact. Just an avant-garde masterpiece.

i will finish it and add some more grim & kvlt black metal releases after i take a deep breath
