I am worried about the recent increase seen in hacked accounts here & elsewhere.

Nov 15 2009, 1h29

Recently at last.fm, someone seems to have been able to get into user accounts, and make postings completely at odds with what the poster was known to do, when they were active @ last.fm.

Specifically, I noticed the account of the user 'obbrio' which has been in disuse for about 7 months, and now suddenly is posting shouts about about some promotion that sony is doing. Otherwise, there's no activity on that account, in other words, no scrobbling, et cetera.

Earlier this week, someone hacked into my facebook account, and although facebook locked my account until I changed my password, I find it worrying since I have used strong passwords on all accounts for the last 15 years online, and there have been no successful intrusions or hacks into my accounts, ever.
I am compelled to conclude that someone on the facebook side of things, ie, on their administrative side, accessed, permitted someone to access, or perhaps they were hacked into on the server and administrative side.

If I see more of this activity, I will be compelled to close my social networking accounts, since having that type of uncertainty with my online presence is intolerable.

What have you noticed?

What have you done about it?

I regret to feel this way, since I can say many good things about last.fm and facebook. But, perhaps it is a time for a positive change.

in disuse for about 7 months, and now suddenly is posting shouts about about some promotion that sony is doingIs, I think, partially explained by Sony Fantasy Festival » Discussions » Issue & Bug Reporting.

I'd say this was botting but I must be mistaken, 'cause that's against the T&Cs - Ian

I'll be on the lookout. Normally, openers that mention nothing more specific than an artist fall to the edge of my radar, if the artist's well-known they almost certainly fall off, i.e. such may've happened over the last few weeks that's just not stuck in my memory.

News chatter about stolen µcruft service passwords, et al, suggests Last.FM accounts may've been compromised, esp' where a/c's are irregularly used.

On the sanctioned 'shoutbox' botting front, I know it's been unpopular in the past, it seems a bad move for Sony Fantasy Festival to use it, esp' if we're in a peak of more scurrilous 'shoutbox' botting - Ian

Login credentials are also obtained by virus / rootkits with key loggers.

Yes, Faz. The recent stolen µcruft password chatter has centered around key loggers, I think, mainly w/ folk using infected internet cafes.

I've recently found YouScrobble.com. It's an interesting service but there's no RL contact info', the site's hosted by an agency (sometimes used for masking ownership if disreputable sites) and - then - they ask me for my Last.FM password (in order to scrobble plays there) - I don't think so!

Others may be freer, w/ their security - Ian

For the second time in two weeks, someone completely unkown to me, with very little music, if any, in common, asks to be my friend. I go to their last.fm user page, and they have acquired 3000-odd new friends @ last.fm in the last 24 hours!
What are such users trying to accomplish?
I contrast such activity to other last.fm users who see something interesting that I might have posted, or music that I've listened to, and they establish contact in what I would consider a normal sort of way. I look at their friends @ last.fm count, and it is credible (10-100) with no extreme increase whatsoever.
The latter last.fm users, I'm extremely comfortable with.
    The former, beware!

Here's an update which you might appreciate:

    1. I've cancelled my twitter account, hopefully, for the third and final time. Initially urged by an acquaintance to get an account there in the summer of 2006, I later found it to be completely unnecessary, so I shut it down. Later on, I found out that someone , unknown to me, reactivated the account. I shut the damned thing down again, and wrote a serious message to the folks in charge of twitter, not to reactivate this account, under any circumstances. They replied, 'no problem'.
Today, I find out it has been reactivated again, against my wishes, so I changed the password, deleted all traces of me in twitter, and then deleted the !@#$%^&*+= account again. Twitter now tells me that there is no chance of resurrecting that vile beast of an account, one that previously wouldn't die. I won't be holding my breath, since nothing phases me now.

    2. facebook is ok, but I am still entertaining notions of shutting it down, due to lack of interest. Yes, it did serve me well, by getting me in touch with long-lost relatives and friends. Maybe I should just email them all, and say to them, stay in touch, but it's 'hasta la vista, baby' @ facebook. We'll see...

    3. Last.fm is still my favourite, since I like to listen to and talk about music, among other things, and for the most part, the experience has been quite rewarding. Now, just as long as CBS doesn't sell my soul to the devil, or worse, then things ought to be fine here, or so I hope.

You might not have this aspect in yours, but when I get those stray reqs, sometimes I find that the dozens of new friends sought/made by a new man on the scene are... all women! I can guess at the trying part. ;)

No, these requests have nothing to do with boyfriends seeking girlfriends, vice-versa, or anything like that. When I go to these users' pages, it appears that the user is male, and all the users he's been trying to befriend are not related to a gender-specific request.
The ultimate proof is that these user accounts (those of the offending last.fm spammer) are shut down, and 'banner user' appears.
I think that these offending spammers are looking for accounts to exploit.
