  • Lyric Game

    Nov 5 2009, 16h38

Just to see how many responses I'll get :)

Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Bold out the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4: Looking them up on Google or any other search engine is CHEATING!
Step 5: If you like the game post your own!

I'm bored, and this list should get an update.

    1. How did you get into 29?
    Dr Horrible cast
Well, I'd started watching How I Met Your Mother, and through imdb-ing Neil Patrick Harris, I ended up downloading Dr Horrible. Genius.

    2. What was the first song ever you heard about 22?
    Bishop Allen
That would be Middle Management, it was on the Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist soundtrack.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33?

  • The Hypelist [ May 10 - May 16 ]

    Mai 12 2009, 16h49

After a wild, wild ride of gigs and concerts, I've finally found some time to squeeze in a Hypelist!

    *Peaches - Talk To Me
I'm not too sure what I think about the album as a whole, but I'm LOVING this song! As if we need any more proof that Soulwax, who lend a hand with this song, is awesome.

*Frightened Rabbit - TocarThe Modern Leper
Gorgeous! Sounds a bit like... Well. Undeniably British anyway. Just trust me on this.

*The Reindeer Section - TocarI'll Be Here When You Wake
Yes, you do know that voice: that's Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody! This is his "supergroup" with people from all over Schotland. Arab Strap, Belle and Sebastian, Idlewild, Mogwai. Mull Historical Society... They all helped out to make this project happen.

*Nickel Creek - TocarSomebody More Like You
Folk, country, a tiny bit of bluegrass and pop... Catchy.

    *Emiliana Torrini - Gun
Fascinating song, sounds like a thunder storm approaching... You can just feel the air crackle with electricity and pressure.

  • The Hypelist [ April 19 - April 25 ]

    Abr 18 2009, 15h47

Oh boy, do I have some great stuff for you this week!

*The Decemberists - TocarThe Rake's Song
I don't even know where to start on this one. This is my current favourite track off the new album, The Hazards of Love. It's a concept album that tells a sort of folklore tale, a rock opera if you will, so the songs have to be seen in the total context of the story. Opinions are greatly divided on this project, some people compare it to David Bowie's The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust, some people think it's just pretentious. This album definitely requires multiple listens to sink in, but so far, I'm leaning towards 'awesome'. What can I say? I love stories.

    *Beirut - Postcards From Italy
Balkan gypsy music is on the rise, and this is another example of how awesome that wave can be. Love it, love it, LOVE IT.

    *Eef Barzelay - TocarN.M.A.
I'll just quote the little blurb on his page: "Eef Barzelay is the S.S.W.G (singer/songer/with/guitar) for the band Clem Snide. He enjoys old-timey music but also has an out-of-left-field interest in the apocalyptic and the ways human folly and failure might influence it. Wake up! Goodnight."

*Explosions in the Sky - TocarDay Eight
An entirely instrumental band, who create epic, ambient 'soundscapes'. I didn't know which song to pick, because they're all amazing, so I went with this one, because it reminded me of Snow Patrol's TocarThe Golden Floor, but you honestly need to listen to these tracks in their entirety to properly appreciate them.

    *The Faint - TocarI Disappear
    Electronic, funky, dark. Booya.

  • The Hypelist [ March 30 - April 5 ]

    Abr 5 2009, 9h55

I skipped a week, but now I finally found some time to type another hypelist.

*Bishop Allen - Click Click Click Click
So cute! Just too bad that you can't listen to any of their stuff on Last.FM.

*Mystery Jets - Young Love (feat. Laura Marling)
Another artist with very little stuff to listen to on this site, but I highly recommend them anyway. Cheerful and versatile!

*Johnny Cash - TocarThe Mercy Seat
Damn, this song is intense. It's about a man who's about to be executed on the electric chair, and it's quite disturbing. And stunning. The original is by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, although I must say I prefer the acoustic version.

*Oi Va Voi - Yesterday's Mistakes
KT Tunstall's previous project. It's influenced by Balkan tunes and her voice fits perfectly.

*I Am Kloot - TocarStrange Without You
One of my favourite songs by this band.

    Enjoy!

  • The Hypelist [ March 16 - March 22 ]

    Mar 22 2009, 9h47

This has been an insanely busy week, so I haven't had much time to listen to music, but I've still got some tips for you!

    *Solo - Alleen
This is his contribution to the Poetracks album. The basic idea is that musicians are given a poem by the three most famous Dutch writers (Mulisch, Reve, Hermans) and write a song, using the poem as lyrics. Solo used the poem 'Alleen' by Gerard Reve, and it's gorgeous! I can upload it, in case anyone's interested.

    *DeVotchKa - How It Ends
I finally finished the book Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. I vaguely remember seeing the movie adaptation ages ago, and this is the song they put under the trailer. Gorgeous!

*Doves - TocarThe Man Who Told Everything
Another case of a Last.FM recommendation that I've finally listened to. And once again, I wasn't disappointed!

*The Rifles - TocarThe Great Escape
Great album, great band! They remind a lot of The Clash for some reason. And they're coming to Pinkpop! But why on earth isn't the new album up on Last.FM yet?

    *Devandra Banhart - Lover
And another track that you can't listen to! Sigh. Well, it's cheerful and addictive, so, you know, there you have it.

    Ta!

*Placebo - TocarBroken Promise (feat. Michael Stipe) Fantastic song! Michael Stipe's voice fits surprisingly well.

*Noah and the Whale - Tocar5 Years Time The (former?) band of Laura Marling, very cute.

*Jamie Lidell - Hurricane Seriously, buy the new album. This guy is one funky legend!

*Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal Gorgeous sound, it's what Mother Nature would sound like if she could sing (so to speak).

*Fanfarlo - TocarFire Escape I love this album, it's fun and fresh! It's just too bad that you can't listen to all the tracks on Last.FM though.

P.S. I just got tickets to an Andrew Bird concert in Amsterdam. WOOHAA!
