• The dirty thirty

    Set 21 2008, 19h31

Thirty questions about the top thirty artists on my chart, as of this date.

    1. How did you get into 29?
I got into John Zorn when a friend recommended his work to me. That's what got me interested in the experimental and avant-garde scene.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
A different friend of mine, an avid fan of The Residents, was listening to the "Fingerprince" album, not sure which song, but I was hooked.

    3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
I own all of Rancid's full-length albums, and the BYO Split they did with NOFX.

    4. What is your favorite song by 15?
My favorite Pink Floyd song would be the tasty and whimsical yet strangely dark "Corporal Clegg."

    5. What is your favorite song by 5?
My favorite Melt-Banana song is "Cracked Plaster Cast." I heard that live and I became an instant fan.

    6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Just pop in any song from R.E.M's album "Tales of the Reconstruction." Those are pretty awesome songs.

    7. What is your favorite song by 10?
Wow, a favorite Faith No More song... I gotta think about that. It would likely either be "RV," "Last Cup of Sorrow," or "Arabian Disco."

    8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
I was watching Beavis and Butt-Head and they were doing a Pizzicato Five video. It blew my mind.

    9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Lots of Flogging Molly songs make me happy.

    10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
I've seen Bad Religion once, and it was a kick-ass show. But if you count Warped Tour I've seen them twice.

    11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
The first Rammstein song I heard was "Engel."

    12. What is your favorite album by 11?
I only have compilations of George Formby. The Golden Greats collection has more songs, but the Ultimate Collection spans a greater length of his career.

    13. Who is a favorite member of 1?
My favorite member of Deerhoof? Tough one, they've all got their niche in the band and they fill it well. Then again, I'm spellbound by Satomi's voice.

    14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
I have never seen Primus live, and it kills me.

    15. What is a good memory involving 27?
"Holy shit, is that the theme from Marble Madness?! You mean I'm not the only one who played that tripe?" Gotta love The Advantage.

    16. What is your favorite song by 16?
NOFX has so many great songs. I rather like their cover of Don McLean's "Vincent."

    17. What is your favorite album by 18?
I only have the two well-known Cibo Matto albums, but I love Stereo Type A. One of my favorite albums of all time.

    18. What is your favorite song by 21?
Mr. Bungle is my favorite work by Mike Patton, so this is really tough to choose. I definitely love "My Ass is on Fire," but I can't count out "Retrovertigo."

    19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
The first Borissong I heard was "Pink."

    20. What is your favorite album by 2?
Talking Heads is my favorite band, and I usually fluctuate between albums. But I'll always have a place in my heart for "Fear of Music."

    21. What is you favorite song by 3?
I have a lot of favorites from the pillows, between "Hybrid Rainbow," "Beehive," and "Lo-Fi Boy, FIghter Girl."

    22. What is you favorite song by 8?
Haha, George Carlin sings the best songs. My favorite is "I shoulda never played the game/ I shoulda fucked ol' what's her name".

    23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
I've seen Daniel Johnston live once. I love that man.

    24. What is the worst song by 12?
It's really hard to pick out the worst song by Boredoms, because they keep shaking the standards of music to the point where best and worst are irrelevant.

    25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28?
My dear friend Wesley Willis. I heard "2x4" first, and it was hard not to love it..

    26. What is you favorite album by 7?
My favorite Polysics album is one of their early ones, "National P."

    27. What is your favorite song by 24?
Cyro Baptista is nuts! My favorite would be "Tutuboli." So much fun to listen to.

    28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Tons of Becksongs make me happy. The whole "Midnite Vultures" album is bound to make me happy.

    29. What is your favorite album by 4?
Wow, now you're getting into a territory of indecisiveness. It's hard to pick a David Byrne album out as my favorite. No, I mean it. I can't think of one I wouldn't consider my favorite. Ugh, fine. My favorite is "Grown Backwards."

    30. How many albums do you own by 20?
I have 8 albums from The Clash. All six studio albums, Black Market Clash and Super Black Market Clash.
  • Favortie album from each year I've been alive:

    Ago 31 2008, 10h21

Stole this idea from Jelone. He had an idea to list his favorite album from each year of his life, and being low on creative energy I have no choice but to plagiarize.First, here's his.

    Now, here's mine.

1986- Talking Heads - True Stories
    1987- R.E.M. - Document
    1988- Dead Milkmen - Beelzebubba
1989- Bad Religion - No Control
    1990- Primus - Frizzle Fry
    1991- Mr. Bungle - self-titled
1992- Faith No More - Angel Dust
    1993- Beck - Golden Feelings
1994- Pizzicato Five - Made in USA
1995- Rancid - ...And Out Come the Wolves
    1996- Weezer - Pinkerton
    1997- Primus - Brown Album
1998- the pillows - Little Busters
    1999- Cibo Matto - Stereo Type A
    2000- Barenaked Ladies - Maroon
2001- John Zorn - The Gift
    2002- Boris - Heavy Rocks
    2003- Polysics - National P
2004- Flogging Molly - Within a Mile of Home
    2005- Deerhoof - Runners Four
    2006- Cheer-Accident - What Sequel?
    2007- Melt-Banana - Bambi's Dilemma
2008- Cyro Baptista - Banquet of the Spirits

Tough decisions for a lot of these years. Here are a whole bunch of runners-up, very noteworthy albums that deserve honorable mention:
1988- Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
1991- Dire Straits - On Every Street
1997- Faith No More - Album of the Year
    David Byrne - Feelings
    2003- Melt-Banana- Cell-Scape
2004- David Byrne - Grown Backwards
    2005- Fantomas - Suspended Animation
    2006- Peeping Tom - self-titled
    2007- Deerhoof- Friend Opportunity
Mark Knopfler - Kill to Get Crimson
    2008- Flogging Molly - Float

Keep in mind these are my favorite albums from each year. Totally independent of how influential they were. Each album holds a fond place in my heart, mostly prompting me to go back to my earlier tastes.

Edit: On second thought, I can't believe I forgot Vision Creation Newsun by Boredoms (released 1999). Seriously, it almost beas out Stereo Type A for me. But I can't decide which is better.
  • Peeping Tom at the TLA

Sat 7 Apr – Peeping Tom
Just so you all know, I'm not gonna do this like a traditional review. All I have to say was that the show was simply amazing. All the performers, including opening act Pigeon John-- whom I've never heard of until tonight, was amazing. What I'm really here to do is to broadcast my disgust at most of the audience during Miho Hatori's performance.

I heard of the show a month before its scheduled date, and I picked up tickets as soon as I got the chance. I discovered it while combing Myspace pages for gigs. I caught the Philly date on Miho Hatori's page, and being a great admirer of her voice I jumped at the chance to see her live. But when I heard Peeping Tom was headlining, I jumped higher, being an equally avid Mike Patton fan.

I found Miho Hatori's performance ethereal, cathartic, and just plain awesome. But it seemed like most of the audience didn't share that sentiment. I can't tell whether she was playing to the wrong audience or if it was because of the fact that this was in Philly (after all, this is the same city that threw snowballs at Santa Claus at Veterans Stadium, and the same people that cheered when Michael Irving snapped his neck), but she wasn't very well-received by the audience. There was constant chattering during her set, and smart-ass comments while she spoke to the audience. I found it excessively rude.

Before anyone jumps at me and says "if you were watching a band you didn't like, you'd do the same thing," they are making a fatal error in character judgment. Just the night before I was at the Xiu Xiu show at First Unitarian, and I heard some buzzing during that show too. I'm not a huge fan of Xiu Xiu, in fact I'm just discovering them. I still resented the banter within the audience. I can't see how people are spending their money to see a show, but spend that time making smart-ass remarks and praddling on about whatever.

Then there were those handful of assholes who were shouting stuff and heckling Hatori. I mean, come the fuck ON! What would one hope to gain from heckling artists? It's one thing if your tastes aren't in tune with the performance. But keep it to yourself. If you're making smart-ass comments about bands, at least say it in a way that only your small congregation of asshole bretheren are within earshot.

Did you Patton fans join in the cacophony when Incubus fans booed Mr. Bungle off the stage at Family Values Tour 1998? Didn't think so.
