Haha, I know. These days the easy answer for me is black metal, but then I start going on with "neofolk, post-punk, a little industrial, some death metal and doom metal, noisy stuff, uhhhh, shoegaze and ambient and things like that..."

Well see this is why I'm confused, because Jesu and The Angelic Process are what people tend to call "metalgaze" while Mono is just post-rock. Anyhow, I do agree with you on that, I'm much more into this faster upbeat stuff. And I don't like Jesu either, so... er, it sounds to me like you were trying to say "yes"? Also, about Mono, I'm not worried about disagreeing or anything, but I was actually never a very big fan of theirs until Hymn to the Immortal Wind came out, which is bounds beyond anything they've done, and totally gorgeous. If you haven't heard that one I'd recommend at least giving it a shot.

I'm not entirely sure what sort of thing you mean by slow and plodding. Like... Jesu, or boring crap like that? The Angelic Process (which is much better than Jesu), maybe?

Mm, that Skywave album. That will be seeing a lot more plays. Stuff like that and APtBS is great, 'cause I've been kinda looking for good noisy shoegazy rock/pop ever since Asobi Seksu's Citrus, I think -- that album was so great... and then Hush was so disappointing. So yeah, this stuff is awesome.

I will say that I really don't expect Les Discrets to blow you away like Rapture (honestly, thank you -- I don't even know how I'd never heard this band until you recommended them), but for a split it's a pretty decent diversion.

The other Alcest track is much, much better and similar to the Amesoeurs EP. The one you heard isn't that great. But yes, I would say the Les Discrets side is a lot better.

Aw. I'm actually inclined to agree somewhat, though. Aside from his participation in Peste Noire, I think the Amesoeurs EP is easily the best thing Neige has done. I do like Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde and the Amesoeurs LP, but I don't really go crazy over them like some do. They're pleasant records, just nothing super special. You know? Les Discrets seem to be another band that has taken up Katatonia worship, which seems to be a very popular thing these days. I'm impressed with the results, though.

I think you'd like the new Alcest/Les Discrets split, btw.

I haven't put that one on yet, but I will give it a listen tonight. But I dunno, I mean I really haven't listened to Opeth in quite some time, but while listening to Futile I couldn't help but keep thinking parts of Deliverance or something must have been lifted straight from Rapture. I'm really only talking about the guitar tone, the vocals, and at times the riffing style. Obviously, Opeth has way more of an overblown 'prog' thing going on while Rapture keep it simpler (better) and, as you say, have more pop-rock structured songs injected with that particular Swedish death/doom sound. A bit more like Katatonia, but possibly even better. To be honest, though, this talk of Opeth has kind of got me in the mood to hear My Arms, Your Hearse... I haven't heard it in years, and I wonder if it'll hold up. I really do hate the direction they took beyond that album, though.

Oh hey do me a favor, if you don't mind? This pic should be voted up, the others are ugly. Haha.
