Yea, that's what I was taught too. I think it's interesting but i don't consider it music.

On the Björk front, I strongly recommend that you get Vespertine, it's a fantastic album. Homogenic is also great, but they are a bit different. Homogenic is darker and more dramatic, whereas Vespertine is much more introverted and intimate. You can't go wrong with either though really. Good songs to start with are 'Pagan Poetry', 'Bachelorette', 'Cocoon' and a personal favourite of mine, 'Sun In My Mouth'. I'm not at all keen on her latest album Volta, but I can forgive her for that haha.

Hey neighbour, great little blog you've got there! You've introduced me to the pains of being pure at heart, I like very much :) (that sounds a tad odd taken out of context) And yeah, Slowdive - Alison is an amazing song, it's beautiful... Plus it's used in the doom generation which is a great (but terrifying) film. Also, I do recommend checking out Blonde Redhead's earlier stuff... It is a bit different to their newer stuff but it's still great. Definitely give 'Hated Because of Great Qualities' a listen :)

Oh, I'm all over Different Trains - that was the first Reich I ever heard (except maybe in a film or something and I wasn't aware at the time). I think minimalism has already been digested into pop paradigms, several times over the years - from krautrock to ambient to techno to 'tribal' artists like Boredoms and Gang Gang Dance... it just seems odd that folks are going for the real deal, original stuff lately. It also seems like it'll be a short-lived fascination. OH and honestly, don't feel embarassed in any way! Seriousness is not necessarily quality. I've found, looking back, my best writing pieces were far more humorous, emotional, and off-the-cuff. I think we write best when we've got feeling behind the words, regardless of how properly they're constructed. And thank you, by the way, for reading it! Have you heard Terry Riley's "A Rainbow In Curved Air"? Now that one is some seriously pop-leaning minimalism - listening, I can forsee dance remixes..

Ha it's cool. To answer your question about Cage's controversy, the only thing I've ever run into is the argument of whether 4'33 can be considered "music" or not, which then leads into the debate of does silence even exist? Or is it just the lack of it's opposite... blah blah blah. I think that's really the only thing that merits such response. I like a lot of his work though, it's very unique.

I just read your blog. Am I the "hipster" who's page you stumbled across which inspire such thoughts? I like minimalism, it's good music, I don't think I'm a slave to some trend though.

hello there, I saw you on the Steve Reich page (i think) and thought I'd say hello and that your blog is enjoyable. You're probably right about the minimalism thing, in that it'll at least be hip to toss around the phrases & names... I don't think kids will start playing Drumming at parties or anything, but I must admit I've been doing my part in sharing that stuff with people ;] Also I think I'll add you. Writers like writers.

No I've never met him, I've just heard that his performances are quite the experience. 7.5 sounds about right, ha I would love to see Pitchfork's review of silence.

Agreed, not something I would guess becomes trendy. Then again it's only a matter of time until Pitchfork reviews some interpretation of "Glassworks" or "In C" or even 4'33 by Cage ha. So has Steve Reich ever come to your school/have you ever seen him?

They are pretty brilliant. So you go to a university that appreciates minimalism? What school might that be?
