I would but I'm completely broke, I hear they are good live though. I think they toured with Rocky Erickson of the 13th Floor Elevators as his backing band for a while, so that's saying something.

oh, Aretha! I'm finally getting real into her and I'm excited. My ma's got Lady Soul and Young Gifted and Black on vinyl - both are great and I've just gotten to downloading them, I'd recommended for sure. Which blues of hers had you gotten?

Well it would appear we have the same go-to's haha. Nina and Etta are my tied favorites of that kind of singer, though Dinah Washington's not far behind - she's essentially the female Ray Charles, dabbling in blues, jazz, soul, torch songs and gospel. She's commanding without being overbearing and has this cattiness to her voice that reminds me of Ronnie Spector. Like Nina and Etta, she helps remind you that whatever blues those old men had, the women had 'em two-fold. You should also check out Karen Dalton. She may not fit a 'soul singers' profile, but she's soulful, brother. She's like Billie Holiday with a folky pathos to her, and a no bullshit edge. She was Dylan's favorite singer in the Gaslight days, and like Robbie Robertson, held it down for Native Americans. But mostly, she's just otherworldly. Get "In My Own Time", it's the most inspired covers record I've yet to hear and she's got one hell of a backing band - from there every song becomes hers entirely, for me anyway.
