I've noticed you listen to Trilok Gurtu. Some time ago Trilok Gurtu performed on Nguyen Le's Tales from Viet-Nam. I consider it a classic album in jazz fusion/world music genre and therefore dedicated a comprehensive review of the album. You can read it by clicking below. There's a translation tool in the top right corner. Finally, if you like the review you may also click "lubię to" button to like my website (on the right handside of the page). http://www.laboratoriummuzycznychfuzji.com/2013/03/recenzje-klasyka-tales-from-viet-nam.html

I'll have to download all these bands soon, thanks. I'll return with impressions.

One reason why I'm searching for lots of post rock now is because I want to find bands that deviate from the formula. Lots of bands of the typical, almost cliche song structure you just described, and while I think it works well, it gets monotonous and redundant when I get a dozen recommendations and all of them follow the same formula. I like GYBE but I prefer stuff like Talk Talk or Miles Davis' IASW. If you know stuff like that, I'd be interested.

I downloaded this album a year ago but lost it when my external HDD was destroyed. I like it. Time to download it again.

To add to why I don't feel like listening to it, I feel there isn't much to dissect, not on an intuitive (or "emotional") or technical level. Maybe it's because I still have the album in shitty 192kbps quality. I will need it in FLAC eventually. But so far listening to the album intensely concentrated twice already hasn't offered my ears and brain much new information to notice, which is quite unlike certain other albums like Heritage, In Absentia, The Drift or Mark Hollis. I hope I'm wrong and a lossless rip will better my opinion of it.

Mostly yay. I like the album but it doesn't sound as ambitious or special as Mike and Steve hyped it up to be. It takes minor influences from Mark Hollis and Scott Walker but doesn't really push their songwriting to the edge like those respective musicians did. They take techniques and moods they're very familiar with and simply introduce them to a new aesthetic. Unfortunately, unlike many Porcupine Tree or Talk Talk records, I don't find too much incentive to revisit the album. It's good and I like some parts of it a lot but it feels too minimalist without offering something to at least either soothe me, interest me greatly, etc., at least not as often as I'd like.

You like The Drift? Quite the bro. Check out Tim Buckley's Starsailor. Has a lot in common with The Drift except....more "jazzy". Kayo Dot's Coyote is also recommended, though not quite as "orchestral" as these other two.

Ahhh, i love Alcest. Both their full lengths are absolutely magical and wonderous. Ecailles de Lune is one of the few albums I keep in lossless on my portable media player. BSG is one of the few shows (sci-fi or otherwise) that has a big cast and leaves me loving more than half of them. I loved the main characters of SG-1 (especially Vala) though you grow so close to them since they're only a team of 4 throughout 200 episodes (though Jonas and Hammond and Dr. Frasier are also real good).

I am a pretty big sci fi fan. I haven't seen Universe yet since I'm still watching Atlantis. Frankly, I like Stargate but it often fails to impress me. A lot of the stories are a little meaningless/cliche and I have grown so out of the monster-of-the-week formula. BSG is the masterpiece of sci-fi watersheds, in my opinion. I will check out that site when i'm not sleepy or buzzed off a lot of wine.

Sorry for a super late reply, my PCs motherboard is dead and I have little incentive to type shit on a phone. Music journalism? What mags/sites do you write for? Is it hard entering that kind of business, any post-secondary studying really necessary for it?
