INTERVIEWS
———-
COLDCUT This Noise Is Under Control
Interview with Matt Black
Pioneers of the house/rave scene of the late eighties, Coldcut's Matt Black and Jonathan More have gone on to become one of the most forward-thinking and consistent artists of their generation. Having set up their own record label, Ninja Tune, in the early nineties, they have help shape the musical landscape of the last fifteen years by helping artists such as DJ Vadim, Mr Scruff or Amon Tobin to become household names. Ten years after their last album, Coldcut return with a brand new collection of tracks and collaborations. We caught up with Matt Black to talk about Sound Mirrors, remaining independent at all cost and the virtues of democracy.

ASCOLTARE Styling To The Bitter End
Interview with Dave Henson
Once a member of post-rock outfit Gwei-Lo, Cambridge-based Dave Henson is now behind electronic labels Tripel and Dubbel and has been gaining some recognition for his project, Ascoltare, first with his debut album, Visceral Vendor, released nearly two years ago, and then with a series of unforgettable EPs. Most recently, Henson teamed up with label-mate Peter Gregory (Um) to release a split album. We caught up with the man to talk about this latest project, what Ascoltare stands for musically, and also about the future and the difficulty of running a small independent label.

BENBECULA In Organics
Interview with Steve McConnell
In 1999, Edinburgh was well known in the electronic music world as being the last known address of Boards Of Canada and, well, not much else… Two artists - Phase 6 and Beluga - sought to change all this, setting up the CDR label Benbecula. Initially concentrating on
compilations of work from local artists, the label moved on to produce a number of landmark solo releases from artists such as Reverbaphon, Frog Pocket and the modestly named Christ. As a result Benbecula has seen its stock rise with invites to play international festivals, plaudits from all the best music mags and admiration from the late great John Peel. Steven McConnell has managed the label since 2000. Stuart Aitken spoke to him about the label's new CDR project, wind farms, obscure Scottish islands and the Scots' love of a good old singsong. Just don't mention Boards Of Canada
