Fri 21 Aug – Crüe Fest II

Probably the best show I've seen so far at the VBA. It was hot, the place was crowded, and the show was long. Only the strongest survived as about 1/3rd of the crowd was gone way before Mötley Crüe's set was finished. My buddy Len was laying on the ground due to exhaustion (and probably a little too much beer). Theory of a Deadman followed Drowning Pool and Charm City Devils on the main stage and Theory put on a great show as the crowd finished settling in.

Godsmack came on with Sully Erna's crazy boston accent and totally, totally rocked. I never took them seriously, with all the Alice in Chains references, but I didn't see that association and will be listening to them more, especially with a new album forthcoming, of which they sang TocarWhiskey Hangover. They began the latter half of their set with two drum kits and dueling drum solos (Batalla De Los Tambores)... and of the rest of their performance severely rocked.

Mötley Crüe came on performing inside a very small stage prop meant to look like an operating room, a la Dr. Feelgood. After the initial song, the prop disassembled into a huge stage and the Crüe launched into a performance of the entire album, beginning to end. Vince Neil seemed a little hoarse, and I never realized, or noticed I guess, that his voice is almost a falsetto. I never paid much attention to them after Shout At The Devil or Theatre Of Pain, but I was definitely there during Dr. Feelgood, and all the memories from the late 80s came streaming back. The performance was stupendous, even if Vince Neil sounds like a munchkin in his talking voice and Tommy Lee didn't perform because he had injured his hand.

Tommy Lee did come out on stage several times, apologized for his mishap (he didn't say what happened), and his replacement drummer more than covered for him. Tommy was at the piano for TocarHome Sweet Home, which was the "2nd half" of their show, where they sang more of their top hits.

Overall I really loved the concert and had a great time. I was reintroduced to the greatness of Dr. Feelgood and also reminded how much I liked Time For Change from that album.

Thu 6 Aug – Rockstar Mayhem Festival

...I'll probably never go again. Now I don't want to piss off you brutal death metal kids. I'm sure this was something you've been waiting all year for.

I showed up late so I have no words for All That Remains, Behemoth, God Forbid, Job for a Cowboy, nor Whitechapel. I bet they were great in a death metal kinda way, I am sorry I missed these performances.

As far as the rest of the acts, the standouts (for me) were Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine. Killswitch Engage and Slayer were good, especially KsE's rendition of TocarHoly Diver... but Marilyn Manson was definitely a pre-packaged deal. He came on at exactly 10, and left at 11. He sang a few of his hits, said that Virginia Beach was the Fuckin' Greatest Crowd So Far (I bet he says that to all the girls), something about Virginia Beach and Virgins, did TocarThe Beautiful People... and that was it.

His show was a little better than when I saw him in Hawaii 14 years ago (he came on 90 minutes late and stalked off the stage after three songs).

The crowd was indeed wild. Halloween-y. Haven't seen so many tattoos since... well, I dunno.

Sat 11 Jul – Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, Poison

It was nice to see Cheap Trick opening. They did a short set of their popular hits and a couple from their new album, The Latest. Lots of cool banter from Rick Nielsen, and Robin Zander was in good form.

Poison came on and I didn't know what to expect. Bret Michaels was noticeable hoarse, but he carried the set well, cutting up between (and during) songs about the band's longevity ("22 years!"). There were some great C.C. DeVille guitar solos, a good tribute to the military, Michaels on the harmonica, and very cool pyro.

It seems Joe Elliott's mike or vocals were a little off during the Def Leppard set, they seemed fuzzy or muffled.

As I've seen (so far) this summer, most of the big bands have these videos pretty much synchonized to their songs, so they don't stray from the format too awful much. After getting used to the sound, the DL part of the show was a lot of fun. I'd forgotten about ALL those great songs that Def Leppard made hits out of. They hit them all and the guitars and drums sounded spectacular.

Overall, another great concert in Virginia Beach. I really liked how C.C. DeVille roamed into speed metal territory during one of his solos. I think the Poison production gave Def Leppard a run for their money. I loved the Def Leppard songs, but they've become dated. Sort of like how Eagles hits are now considered country rock, the Def Leppard catalog is almost (almost) pop.

  • Virgínia ama Mariza

    Mar 12 2009, 3h16

    Wed 11 Mar – Mariza

Mariza's commanding presence on the American Theatre's stage tonight was both gaunt and graceful. She had an amazing vocal range that I hadn't noticed on the recordings I've listened to. The reigning queen of fado's performance was beautiful as she sang her more traditional/new fado from Portugal and other songs with noticeable Cape Verde and Brazil influence and beats. Including impressive solos from Angelo Freire, (Portuguese guitar), Diogo Clemente, (acoustic guitar), Marino de Freitas (acoustic bass), and "Vicky" (drums), Mariza sang several songs from her new album, Terra, plus a couple favorites. (She also had Briton Simon James on piano and trumpet). Mariza finished off with an amazing TocarCrying and then a beautiful rendition of an Amália Rodrigues poem. Too many "amazing's" and "beautiful's"? Well I understand now, I'm pretty sure I now know what Fado really is -- 'Saudade.'
