I think you've hit it on the head with Lenman there. it's nice to see he's back, but it's just not Reuben. in more interesting news, hoping to catch FotL on their london date. need to get my mitts on that new album/EP first.

I'd go to a whole lot more gigs if I could get in for free! The best FotL show I've seen was at the Flapper in Birmingham for Off The Cuff festival, can't beat the small pubs! I'm glad they still play some mclusky songs too, I went through a period of listening to nothing but Dallas for a good few months I think...

Ha, I don't listen to them enough to recognise the old material. I usually find their albums a little hit-and-miss overall so I'm happy to find I'm enjoying most of the songs on this one! Some of them are really great, I think I'd put the album second behind Travels. Should be at the Bham date for the tour! Never seen them at their own show before so it should be good. You?

  • RiotSugar

Hey, you had a chance to check out the new FotL record yet? It's pretty great. Future Child Embarrassment Matrix has one of the most interesting opening lines I've heard in a long time... I feel weirdly proud of them for writing it.

My live trademark as of late is stuff breaking that worked during the soundcheck so last minute abandon of what I'd planned out before and sloppily improvising it with varying success. Yeah, Con-Dom was the highlight for me that night, really fierce and engaging performer.

Yes I am. Cool, thanks, glad you enjoyed it, I thought I was terrible, haha. I wasn't really in the mood for Skullflower though I usually enjoy them a lot.

the fanboy in me is screaming Future of the Left, but close runners-up would be Blacklisters, Three Trapped Tigers, Cleft, Bo Ningen and Castrovalva. I almost wish the lineup wasn't so shit-hot, because my knees and ankles are fucked after three days of standing up.

It would be really awesome if you could do that in DiS, thanks ! I'm glad you liked it. Concerning Japanese music, you might appreciate Jacks (Vacant World), Les Rallizes Dénudés (Live '77 - Mizutani - Double Heads), Kahimi Karie (Nunki - It's Here), Taku Sugimoto (Opposite), Tujiko Noriko (Make Me Hard - Solo), and Makoto Kawabata (Hosanna Mantra). If you need more details about each one or can't find a way to get them, just PM me !

You could always make a single cd version of the songs you like?

    janeiro 2013
  • fingolfin92

Yeah double album works - it's about as long as the coheed double (ie. short... its two 45 minute albums, not two 60 minuters). It feels less commercial than only revs if that helps ;P

Oh man trying to find an entry point for Boris isn't easy! Feedbacker is one of my favourite records of all time though, it's got a really nice mix of drone, noise and fucking huge riffs which quite nicely encompasses most of what they'd done up until that point. Beyond that everything is so different it's hard to recommend just one album! I'd say Smile, Rainbow and Akuma No Uta form the best of the more 'song' oriented albums but a lot of people rate Heavy Rocks (2002) and Pink instead (and I have a massive soft spot for New Album... J-Pop!). Amplifier Worship is just weird and disgusting and wonderful and beautiful in ways I struggle to describe. Flood and Dronevil are both great droners but not always easy listening, you really gotta be in the mood for those sometimes. Most of these albums have about 2 or 3 versions as well of course because fuck Boris but that should be a pretty good start!

  • RiotSugar

Good to hear! I'm going to see them again in a few days, can't wait. Not sure how familiar you are with their material but the setlist for this tour has been 'the hits' (Rainbow, Pink, Statement), 2 old droners (Huge + Flood Parts 3&4) and 4 new songs if you're interested in looking them up. Glad you enjoyed it anyway man! They're my most listened to band for a reason, haha.

    dezembro 2012
  • RiotSugar

Boris were RAD yesterday. They're playing a ridiculously varied set but it works really well, opening and closing with disgusting amounts of drone of course. The first song is nearly as old as me, haha. Hope you enjoy it!

I'll probably be off uni and back in London in April so I'll do my best to be there! I've waited so fucking long to see Boris. Since coming to uni I've been able to see so many good shows though, I love having homes in both London and Bham.

For your BATS problem, have you tried contacting Sargent House Europe? The guy who used to run Richter Collective is now running the EU HQ of Sargent House, so he'll probably be able to help you.

    novembro 2012
  • RiotSugar

No problem! Spent too much money at uni already sadly to justify going to Swans so it's probably gonna be another case of avoiding ever having to properly listen to them so I can't be disappointed by not going, haha. I'll be seeing Boris for the first (and second) time in December too, looks like they'll be playing mostly new material though so I have no idea what to expect but I'm hoping it'll be fantastic. They often are.

    novembro 2012
  • RiotSugar

Download right here, enjoy! It's a shame about the CD, you'd think considering it's the last ever Richter Collective release they'd make sure they got it right. Hope it turns up soon!

Yo, you still waiting for the new BATS album to arrive? I didn't order a CD so can't provide any insight there I'm afraid but I can hook you up with mp3's in the meantime if you want. It's fucking great.

Thanks man, yeah it's a bit more of a post-rock sound over ambient this time around!

As contrived as it sounds, I would start at the beginning. The Rome sound is consistent, but there are little differences on each album in order to complete the theme/concept. I think it'll be easier to follow that way.

  • Cosmonaut_

It is a very complete album. I'm not sure I would go as far as to call it their best yet as I haven't listened to it anywhere as near as much times as I have everything else they have done. It is unbelievable though. I loved Everything touching, I think the way they have expanded their sound from just loops is quite exceptional. I hear hints of The Antlers in there at point. I think the new versions of Ode to Ancestors and Books are incredibly fresh, especially the former. It is fair to say that I am quite satisfied.

  • Cosmonaut_

It is bloody brilliant, isn't it? I was worried after the Old Mystics single that they couldn't come up with anything fresh anymore, but I was clearly wrong. I love the heavier sound they have gone for on this.

Yeah, new Godflesh album... I hope it'll sound something like their last one, at the very least (since asking for another "Streetcleaner" would be too much). If it'll end up being a an alternative rock affair akin to Jesu's "Conqueror" I'll stop believing in split bands reunions. Not so sure about them touring next year, though. We'll have to see about that, but fingers crossed, in all hopelessness.

  • thekillingspree

Pale Sketcher is nice if you're into more electronic stuff, while guitars take a break. Seeing Godflesh... Lucky you! I don't like Neurosis, they literally give me headaches. I wanted to see Jesu and Godflesh in the same music fest last year but I wasn't able to go. Now I will most likely never see Godflesh live again... *sigh*

    setembro 2012
  • thekillingspree

Same here, Godflesh rules above the rest (even though I started with Jesu, hence why I have so many more scrobbles of that). Listening to Jesu on vinyl with your eyes closed... This calls for a hipster reference. But I can't be bothered with it right now. Lots of nice Jesu songs to listen with our eyes closed... Some of them might also be fun to listen to while cutting one's wrists, lots of "I'm shit, goodbye" songs to listen to from Jesu. I think I see what you mean about JK Flesh, since it's kinda the same thing I feel about The Blood of Heroes (not sure if you've listened to that one).

  • popadomnomnom

haha I love him! So i'm guessing you're going to be keeping your fingers crossed too then... Refused, ATDI, Hell is for Heroes, Hundred Reasons......Reub? :D I heard it's all hinging on Guy as he's firmly settled in FTA, but holy shit, I'd move mountains to catch every show if they did! ATDI were amazing btw, so chuffed they played lopsided amidst everything else I could have hoped for!

I can relate to money issues, I'm a massive spendthrift! Thankfully my uni seem to believe I'm worth a hefty scholarship (god knows why) or I'd be massively in debt. ANYWAY, check this if you're still interested. Note the improved performance, kick ass drums and Omar just walking straight off without a word at the end >_< Crowd really did help make the show though. I think TMV are on a kinda unspoken hiatus at the moment with the July show being their last this year and all. Hopefully this upcoming ORLG tour isn't one final tour for Omar to call it quits on all his projects, he doesn't seem to be in a very good place at the moment :(

  • thekillingspree

Yes, "Heart String" was a very melodic affair that, sadly, lacked quite a bit in the rocking department. As for JKB, I haven't listened to his JK Flesh project yet, though I think I've heard some samples some time ago and didn't really like it... I've listened to a few of JKB projects, but I've only really enjoyed Jesu, Godflesh and Pale Sketcher. I will probably have to get a hold on the JK Flesh album and make my mind about it. Are you into any of JKB's projects in particular?

    agosto 2012
  • RiotSugar

Haha criticise away! It's alright.Personally, I'm not sure what more they could have possibly put into the show. The contrast with the previous shows this year is ridiculous - they clearly wanted this to be 'the big one' so to speak. From what Jim and Ced said I gather that it was probably the last. I guess I'm lucky in being able to disconnect the music from all the other shit surrounding it. Yeah, they should have done more shows besides just the big expensive ones and no, Omar still doesn't give a fuck but when they put in a performance like they did last night, it's all too easy to forget. Without ATD-I there'd probably have been no Million Dead, Blakfish, MMISL et al either which is the stuff that really got me into music proper so it was kinda special for that reason too. MMOTHS were okay but just the weirdest billing, I'm sure I'd have enjoyed them more at another show but there are so many bands who would kill for that slot and be much more suitable too.

  • thekillingspree

"I did get the impression that he felt they had done their 'pop' album now so I'm not sure another "Heart String" is on the cards tbh" OH PLEASE YES. I am sure whatever they do, they will do it just fine, but really... Another "Heart String"... Hum, no. Let's hope they'll focus more on something similar to Pain Agency, an album which I think was really, really good.
