  • Top 15: Negatives

    Out 31 2009, 11h34

Because it's good to take a step back and be impartial sometimes.

    1) Sonic Youth - They aren't afraid of dissonance and rambling noise passages. Many people prefer songs that are pleasing to the ear and that get right to the point. SY also aren't afraid of obscure literary references. Many people don't like it when things go over their heads.

    2) Sleater-Kinney - Corin's voice is...unique. And Carrie's isn't always the most polished. And I love Lora MacFarlane, but SK weren't quite as badass until Janet Weiss joined.

    3) Tegan and Sara - OMG LESBIAN STEREOTYPES. They inspired a generation of girls to get that damned sideways haircut, and I love and hate them for it.

    4) Death Cab for Cutie - Lovesick song about drinking; lovesick song about travelling; lovesick song about the past; lovesick song about a lost girl; repeat.

    :D This is fun.

    5) Radiohead - Don't a lot of people claim to dislike Radiohead because of their supposedly over-enthusiastic fans? That's just silly. As for the band itself, maybe Thom's voice is a negative for some people? Oh, and their stylistic jumps. Some people just HATE how they went from OK Computer to Kid A. (Kid A is my favorite Radiohead album, so...whatever, man.)

    6) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Karen O's voice. A lot of people haven't heard her actually sing; they've just heard one of the screechy/orgasmy songs. Oh, and some people have a thing against all those early-2000s trendy NYC bands.

    7) Portishead - They're weird and morose.

    8) [the band in 8th place doesn't exist in that form anymore. I'll discuss them in their current incarnation] Noiseaux - They're so fucking goofy. It's because they're German. I worry about whether anyone will really *get* them in the US. (I <3 you guys! Please don't kill me)

    9) Lamb - Man, I don't know. They came out of the British trip-hop wave. Oh, I know. They're one of those bands that couldn't quite recapture the greatness of their debut album. Lou's voice was never as big; the songs were never as expansive; the lyrics got so dumb as to be painful in some places.

    10) Beck - He's been around so long that some are worried that he is starting to repeat himself. Lyrically? Yes. And what uplifting lyrics they are. (Fun game: listen to a Beck album and count how many times he says 'funeral' or refers to death. Don't be fooled by happy-sounding songs.) Musically? Eh, from time to time.

    11) Sade - Lol! There is nothing bad about Sade. Are you kidding? They get pigeonholed as a smooth jazz band. But they're actually, you know, talented.

    12) Ani DiFranco - She may have made the modern 'all lesbians must play acoustic guitar' movement popular. No, I don't like it one bit. (Well, a little.)

    13) The White Stripes - Goddamnit, Meg White. Your sketchy drumming is crucial to the raw & drrrty atmosphere that is a WS song. But do you *actually* know how to drum?

    14) Beirut - I will tolerate no negative feelings toward Beirut. If people can't handle European-tinged orchestral carnival music, that's their own problem.

    15) Stars - Sometimes it feels like they're being a bit *too* earnest, if such a thing is possible (I mean you, Torquil). Though if it is, is it necessarily a negative thing?

  • It's been awhile since I've done a survey here.

    Mai 26 2009, 10h36

    1. What's your favorite song by 14?
Favorite song by The Thermals...I don't know anymore. Maybe TocarHere's Your Future, nowadays. I don't listen to them like I used to.

    2. How did you get into 20?
of Montreal was just one of those bands that I had heard about for years and just never bothered to check out for a long time. Based on the other bands I like, it was inevitable that I would hear about them some time.

    3. Who is your favorite member in 8?
Does anyone care about anyone in Portishead other than Beth? No offense, beat-maker guys.

    4. Whats your favorite lyric bit by 29?
The Shins - probably the whole chorus to TocarMine's Not a High Horse.

    5. Have you ever seen 22 live?
I totally had the chance to see Say Hi/Say Hi to Your Mom in Brooklyn two months ago, but things just didn't work out. Balls.

    6. What's your favorite album from 10?
Favorite Beck album is Modern Guilt. I love the whole thing. Can't keep clinging to the past.

    7. Do you own any merchandise from 3?
I have a t-shirt and a button. Tegan and Sara are merch masters. Lesbians snatch that shit up.

    8. What is a good memory you have of 7?
Oh snap. So Noah Sow & Das Heimlich Maneuver don't exactly exist in that incarnation anymore. Noah has a new band called Noiseaux. And every interaction I have ever had with Noah leaves a fond memory. The most obvious is our beer drinking at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

    9. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2?
Sonic Youth are all old farts by now, yeah? :)

    10. When did you first get into 1?
I owned a couple of Sleater-Kinney songs throughout the early 2000s, but I didn't truly fall in love until I saw them live in the fall of 2005. Then I understood.

    11. Who likes 4 along with you?
Man, I bet a solid 50% of the people I know like Death Cab for Cutie.

    12. Which song did you first hear from 15?
First Incubus song I remember hearing, on VH-1 way back in the olden days before they became MTV's even more trashy younger brother, is TocarWarning.

    13. What song made you fall in love with 5?
    Radiohead - TocarPyramid Song

    14. Which song do you not like by 18?
Björk - The Dull Flame Of Desire

    15. Why do you like 14's songs?
The Thermals are incredibly fun, often snarky, and sometimes surprisingly touching. (See TocarTest Pattern)

    16. Where did you first hear 6?
First heard Yeah Yeah Yeahs on the radio, when TocarGold Lion came out. And then my friends started listening to the album non-stop. Then I finally bought it and fell in love.

    17. How long was 19 a singer before you liked them?
According to Wikipedia, PJ Harvey has been active since 1991. So about 15 years?

    18. Does 13 have a song that gives you a bad memory?
Haha, I don't really have any memories regarding The White Stripes.

    19. When did you get into 17?
Oh man, good question. I haven't been listening to Beirut much longer than a year. But it's been a good year.

    20. How long have you been into 11?
Haha! I have been listening to Sade since I was 3 years old. I'm now 21 and I still fucking love them/her.

    21. If 9 had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them?
If Lamb still existed, I would totally drive to see them. And I'd probably cry. They are a big deal.

    22. How many CDs do you own of 12?
I have 8 Ani DiFranco albums. And yes, all on CD, believe it or not.

    23. Does 21 have a song that makes you cry?
Namelessnumberheadman - If I hear Every Fiber live ever again, I just might cry.

    24. Does 27 have a song that makes you happy?
Hooverphonic - I'm usually pretty happy after Innervoice.

    25. Does 23 have a song that makes you smile?
Oh dear. All super old Lenny Kravitz songs make me smile just because they make me remember how great I thought he was when I was 13. And I just laugh and laugh at my teenage earnestness.

    26. What's the last song you've listened to from 28?
Michael Franks - Love is a chain reaction

    27. Is there a song by 32 that you've listened to more than 30 times?
The Prids - Not yet, according to iTunes.

    28. What is a song from 50 that you've only listened to once?
Nelly Furtado - eh, none. Unless I randomly heard something off the new album somewhere.

    29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by 24?
Interpol - Whatever that last single was, about a threesome or something? I got tired of hearing it on the radio. But they've stopped playing it so much, so I don't even remember it any more. Ha!

    30. What song got you into 40?
Death From Above 1979 - none in particular. I just heard about them somewhere, bought the album about a year ago, and they were basically my IT band for a couple of months.

    31. What is your favorite single by 25?
CéU - hehe, I don't know, as I'm not really up to speed on the Brazilian pop charts.

    32. If 49 hated you, what would you do?
The Strokes - Not be terribly concerned, honestly.

    33. What would you say if 42 or one of the members from 42 asked you out?
M.I.A. - 'Shit yeah!' And then I'd brag to all my friends for as long as M.I.A. stayed relevant.

    34. Would you care if 41 had a boyfriend/girlfriend?
I doubt the creators of Gorillaz are taking their character development that deep.

    35. Who has the best voice in 46?
The Decemberists - I'm assuming Colin Meloy.

    36. Do you think 26 is/are good looking?
Gnarls Barkley - Cee-Lo not so much, but I'd probably do DJ Danger Mouse.

    37. How many times have you listened to your favorite song by 36?
According to Last.fm, I have listened to Foo Fighters - TocarLow 17 times.

    38. How many CDs do you own of 30?
Roberta Sà - just one. Granted, she only has two, and they're a tad hard to find outside of Brazil.

    39. Is there a song from 38 that makes you mad?
    I have no 38.

    40. Which member from 31 do you want to see go solo? If 31 is only one artist, what would you do if they joined a group?
Broken Social Scene - haha. What was that whole BSS Presents: thing? I haven't quite caught up to those projects yet. Those might have been solo endeavors. And then there's that whole matter of them being more of a collective effort in the first place.

    41. What does your favorite song from 48 remind you of?
OK Go - TocarHello, My Treacherous Friends. Uh...spiders. Because they talk about spiders in the song. :)

    42. Did you hate 43 at first?
Placebo - yes, actually. When I first heard TocarInfra-Red I was like, this is some 90s band that isn't translating well into the 2000s (see: Weezer). But...then I heard Meds and rethought my position. Now I love Infra-Red too, and listen to their old stuff all the time.

    43. Does your best friend also listen to 33?
    I don't think I have a best friend, but I hope they'd be a Thom Yorke fan.

    44. Do you think your parents would like 37?
Tie between Vedera and The Cure. Definitely not The Cure. Vedera...maybe a couple of songs. Kristen's voice is magical. I don't know how anyone could be immune to it, really.

    45. Does 47 have a song that makes you want to dance?
Quasi - no. Of their two albums I have, none of the songs are all that dancey.

    46. Have you ever seen 34 in person?
Modest Mouse - No, but that'd probably be a fun show now that I think about it.

    47. Do you like 44's name?
In the Pines - yep! Fits their music perfectly.

    48. Is there someone in 45 that you want to go out with?
The American Analog Set - They're nice looking, talented fellows and all. But I'd need to know a lot more about a fellow before I'd go out with him. Especially since I usually don't go out with boys. But you never know. Can't rule anything out.

    49. Do you know anyone that hates 39?
TV on the Radio - I've never heard anyone say they did, but I know a couple of people who wouldn't get them.

    50. Have you ever danced to a song from 35?
José González doesn't make terribly dancey songs.
