Village Vanguard Memory
Fev 5 2006, 22h48
I've just started a Village Vanguard group to collect reminiscences and highlights that last.fm members have sampled over the years at the New York jazz club.
More than a couple years ago, I went with my friend Charlie to see a screening of the Thelonious Monk movie, Straight No Chaser at the Quad Cinema on West 13th Street. It was a freezing winter evening, and after watching the film with the amazing Monk quartet of himself on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Ben Riley on drums, and Larry Gales on bass, Charlie and I decided to go hear some live music.
We strolled over to the Vanguard, walked down the stairs, and there we were in the midst of a Don Pullen set. And who was behind the drum set but Ben Riley himself! What an amazing treat that was, to see the connection between those classic performances documented in the film and our lives in the present.
