Village Vanguard Memory

Fev 5 2006, 22h48

I've just started a Village Vanguard group to collect reminiscences and highlights that last.fm members have sampled over the years at the New York jazz club.

More than a couple years ago, I went with my friend Charlie to see a screening of the Thelonious Monk movie, Straight No Chaser at the Quad Cinema on West 13th Street. It was a freezing winter evening, and after watching the film with the amazing Monk quartet of himself on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Ben Riley on drums, and Larry Gales on bass, Charlie and I decided to go hear some live music.

We strolled over to the Vanguard, walked down the stairs, and there we were in the midst of a Don Pullen set. And who was behind the drum set but Ben Riley himself! What an amazing treat that was, to see the connection between those classic performances documented in the film and our lives in the present.

Cool. I would dearly love to visit some of the jazz clubs in the Village.

Living in the UK the jazz scene outside of London is almost non existant to the point of people think i'm a bit weird for liking jazz.

About the only jazz that we ever hear on the radio is that god-awful pseudo-dixieland stuff from the likes of Acker Bilk and Chris Barber. I say god-awful, it's not really but when it's the only stuff that ever gets an airing it becomes tiresome and I live in hope that one day the radio stations might dig out some Miles Davis or John Coltrane. Hell even some Ramsey Lewis would make a change :)

Thanks for the invite to your group. I want to go to the Village so badly. I've only been to NYC once and it was in the day time, so I got to take a few pictures out Birdland, but I never made it down to Greenwich Village. Plus, no jazz clubs are open at 3 in the afternoon.

Sounds like an awesome experience! Ben Riley's the man, he's just so solid and structured. I'm not going to lie though, I didn't know there was a Straight, No Chaser movie. I'm going to check it out, definitely.

I saw Don Pullen several times with Charles Mingus and then when he & George Adams toured together after Mingus. Lord could that man play piano. To the best of my memory, I never saw Ben Riley and I've never been to the VV. Spent most of my youth at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago.
