Milt Hinton Keeps Good Time
Mar 16 2008, 18h08
Albums recorded late in an artist's career sometimes, frankly, suck. But Milt Hinton's album Old Man Time on Chiaroscuro is quite spry despite the title. I particularly like his playing on
Now's The Time, which is a nice take on the Charlie Parker classic. It's surprisingly good for dancing, given that Hinton trades fours with the drummer for a while in the middle. And check out the way his playing changes underneath each soloist. -

Which is more embarrassing to admit? That you watched the Victoria's Secret fashion show? Or that it made you rush to your computer to listen to the Spice Girls? -

last.fm = full hard drive
Nov 1 2007, 13h35
So I'm going through some of the lesser-played music in my collection, desperately trying to make room for new music on this almost-full 300 GB drive. You know, those random songs you downloaded a year ago and listened to once? Surely we can delete some of those, right?
Well, I have deleted some. But as I've rediscovered good stuff I should be listening to more often, I've wound up downloading just as many new songs from among last.fm's free tracks.
Luckily there aren't any free downloads for Architecture in Helsinki, who clearly I should also be listening to more often... I think I've pulled ahead by a few MB here at the end of the A's... -

1. How did you get into 31?
Read a review of The Flat Earth when it came out and decided to give it a try. (Of course, I already loved his big hit.)
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
Heard
Doop-Doo-De-Doop (A Doodlin' Song) at a dance.
3. What's your favourite lyric by 41?
That's a tough one. But I love the alliteration in "Confusion with our coffee /
Fear and frosted flakes".
4. What is your favourite album by 49?
I'm going with Jordan: The Comeback, since it's the only Prefab Sprout CD I own.
5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
Eight on CD; a few more on vinyl.
6. What is your favourite song by 50?
I'm going with
All the World Loves Lovers.
7. Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
Lots.
8. What is your least favourite song by 15?
Pick almost any one of those early sides where he's trying to sound like Charles Brown...
9. What is your favourite song by 5?
Oh, man. That's impossible. Let's say
Don't Let's Start.
10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Aftermath
11. What is your favourite album by 40?
Maybe You Should Drive, hands down!
12. What is your favourite song by 10?
The Adventures of Greggery Peccary
13. What is a good memory you have involving 33?
Playing canasta and drinking tea while listening to Yello for hours.
14. What is your favourite song by 37?
Her cover of Screamin' Jay's "I Put a Spell on You".
15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Lots and lots (if we go with The Beatles).
16. How many times have you seen 24 live?
Sam Phillips once; I saw King Crimson doing a sound check but I had a terrible headache and my girlfriend wasn't keen on staying for the show anyway. :(
17. What is the first song you heard by 23?
Probably something from Mummer or English Settlement.
18. What is your favourite album by 11?
Everything You Know Is Wrong
19. Who is your favourite member of 1?
If we're talking about Basie's orchestra, I'm gonna go with Freddie Green for sheer staying power.

Never. They need to come to Connecticut soon.
21. What is a good memory you have involving 45?
Being happy to finally discover something really good on myspace. ;)
22. What is your favourite song by 16?
Used to be
Divorce Song, but now it's probably
Alice Springs.

Something off Proof Through the Night.
24. What is your favourite album by 3?
Either Humans or Inner City Front.
25. What is your favourite song by 18?
Going with Mark Heard, I'd say probably
Orphans of God, but mainly because of Buddy & Julie Miller's great cover.
26. What is the first song you heard by 38?
Probably
Death Or Glory or something else on London Calling.
27. What is your favourite lyric that 21 has sung?
Going with Nina Simone, I'd say that she sings the line "I want a little sugar in my bowl" better than anyone, even Bessie Smith!
28. What is your favourite song by 2?
Since Ellington is the most prolific American composer, that is an impossible question. Let's just say
Rockin' in Rhythm.
29. What is the first song you heard by 32?
Something someone posted to a blog. Don't remember which song.
30. What is your favourite song by 8?
Another tough one. But nobody does "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby" better than Armstrong.

33. What is your favourite album by 12?
Probably DOPPLEGANGER.
34. What is the worst song by 29?
Gene Harris has no bad songs. I'm not keen on Oscar Brown Jr.'s ballads, but I wouldn't call any of them bad, either.

40. What is your favourite album by 7?

FYI, there are actually two artists (both blues harp players) who used the name Sonny Boy Williamson!
See instead:
John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson
Aleck "Sonny Boy Williamson" Miller
The Allmusic guide lists them as "Sonny Boy Williamson I" and "Sonny Boy Williamson II", respectively.
They've also been tagged here as follows:
Sonny Boy Williamson I
Sonny Boy Williamson (I)
Sonny Boy Williamson
Sonny Boy Williamson II
Sonny Boy Williamson (II)
Sonny Boy Williamson [II]
