  • Album of the Year

    Mai 5 2009, 9h33

My completely subjective "Album of the Year" for the past 10 years of my life.... I have no qualitative or quantitative measures of how I chose these. I just did, okay?
Let's see how my taste has evolved shall we?

2000: *NSYNC - No Strings Attached
    2001: Dido - No Angel
2002: Jimmy Eat World - Jimmy Eat World
2003: ayumi hamasaki - A Song for XX OR Moulin Rouge Soundtrack
    2004: Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
2005: U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
2006: Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
    2007: Coldplay - X & Y
    2008: Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
    2009: Led Zeppelin - II

*2009 subject to change..... it IS only may after all. Nothing new has blown me away yet. I've had Led Zeppelin II in my car CD player for about a month and it hasn't gotten old yet (it never will!).

I like how, on a lot of these, it's the year AFTER the album came out that it became my personal "Album of the Year..." although sometimes its 'cause the album came out late in the year prior (2002 for example, "Jimmy Eat World" came out in Sept 2001).
Also, note my random J-Pop craze in 2003. I dabbled a bit before and after but I'm pretty sure 2003 was my apex, and i LOVED this album...

If I wanted to make this better, I'd do a spring/summer/fall/winter for each year but... its 2:30 in the morning so I'd better not.
  • Desert Island Albums

    Abr 5 2009, 16h57

Here, in no particular order, are my 4 favorite albums that I would require to be by my side were I stranded on a desert island... [as of 4/2/09]. The 5th album is my rotating spot for the album I am completely obsessed with at the moment but hasn't been promoted into the big 4.

The Rolling Stones - LET IT BLEED
Key tracks: TocarGimme Shelter: come on. Its one of my favorite songs of all time. Need I say more?
Also, TocarCountry Honk is just fun to listen to, give TocarMonkey Man a spin, and TocarYou Can't Always Get What You Want provides a life lesson we should all take to heart.

    Pearl Jam - Ten
Key tracks: TocarEven Flow, TocarAlive: yes they are the singles but they are just SO GOOD...
Once in your life you need to drive down the freeway at 6am with this album turned up super loud and your windows down.

    Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
Key track: If The Brakeman Turns My Way: something about the production of this song catches me up in it every. single. time.
If I had to do away with any song on the album it would be Soul Singer In A Session Band because the tempo can get a little tiresome after a while, but I still like the lyrics in that song so its not bad.

U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
Key tracks: ALL OF THEM! Okay, I have to pick a couple. TocarSometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own is another one of my favorite songs of all time. Yaweh is pretty powerful too, and TocarCity Of Blinding Lights will catch you up in the swell of the moment.
It was really hard for me to pick a U2 album here, but I knew they had to be in the big four. I picked this one because it came out at a crazy time in my life, my first year of college and all that. I knew I loved U2 before I heard this album, but really there are no missteps here. Every song is solid. Perfect album.

    and also
PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea
Key track: TocarThis Mess We're In: Thom Yorke from Radiohead makes an appearance. This song is just perfect, their voices contrast perfectly with each other and they even pull off the "spoken word while someone else is singing" thing that normally annoys me.
  • Unfortunately...

    Abr 5 2009, 16h44

There are many artists that have no scrobbles on my last.fm because I only own their albums on LP, and have no CD or digital versions of their music. I'm writing this as a little homage to them, because its sad to me that they are grossly underrepresented in my statistics. (I'm a bit of a statistics freak... as long as I don't have to compile them myself).

Here are just five that I listen to a LOT and have next to no presence on my charts...
    Bruce Springsteen
    Fleetwood Mac
    Men at Work
    Supertramp
    Billy Joel

    I love you guys!!

Edit: I overlooked these lovely ladies when I wrote this earlier, but alas, they're victims of the same situation: I have 2 or 3 albums of both of them but can't scrobble 'em.
    Joni Mitchell
    Carly Simon
