Mi., 21. Mai. – Newton Faulkner
When I write a review about a concert I always think about the words I choose to make the one reading feel what I felt when I was there. This time it will be hard to describe everything. I don't even know where to start. But let's try...
The mascotte is a sweet small club in Zurich. The atmosphere when you stand inside of that club is just breathtaking. You have to look at everything... the lights, the balcony, the bar (woooaaahhh!), the sofas, the equipment on stage... you cannot even stop looking at everything and everyone before the real magic of Newton Faulkner starts.
And when it started I was already mesmerized. Just to give you a slight idea about what was going on with me, here some random thoughts: "No shoes?" "Where the fuck is the security guy!" "You can play guitar with such big hands?" "Uhm... ohhh..." "He speaks GERMAN!" "I'm a little scared..." "Phhhew..." "Incredible." "What shall I focus on... guitar, left hand, right hand, face, socks, hair? Everything is impossible."
To make it clear... that guy has huge hands. These hands are all over his guitar when he plays. It's so fast you don't even try to think you wanna play like that one day. I don't know if he wasn't wearing shoes because of his new toy as he called it (a floor piano like you use it on organs in church) or if he felt more comfortable. Both is possible.
The set had everything you could wish for. Songs like "To The Light" or "I Need Something" were just brilliant, and I couldn't decide either to sing along, to keep on watching or to close my eyes.
In between the songs he was always joking around, telling us some bits about his songs and giving an example of his new toy or his amps. He even answered questions about his guitars and who made them (sorry, I cannot remember!), said he is totally distracted by the mirror behind the bar, cause he can never watch himself play during a concert, and by the shiny faces in the front row. Which was actually his fault, cause he blinded us with the reflection of the light in his guitar. For "UFO" Newton tought us how to dance and he even played some new tunes. One called "For God's Sake", something with "Billy" and the other one unfinished and untitled yet. The sing along tunes were "Dream Catch Me" and "Gone In The Morning" where he turned the crowd into a big background choir.
The encore wasn't really an encore. He told us that he thinks it's silly to run off the stage, stand in the corner for a few minutes to do nothing, and to come back on stage again. So the encore started with "This is the encore!". In songs it was "Lullaby" and "Bohemian Rhapsody".
When we were out of the venue and took a rest for a minute and everything in my head settled down, I couldn't decide what the best moment in the concert was. The Kings Of Leon interpretation, the guitar play, the jokes, Bohemian Rhapsody or songs like "Feels Like Home" or "I Need Something". The good thing is... I didn't need to decide. I got everything.
And as I think back now, it simply puts a smile on my face.
