On January 19th, I went to the world famous Radio City Music Hall to see The Swell Season. First of all, if you've never been to Radio City, it is truly a beautiful place, a place that even if the show is not so great, you'll still enjoy the experience of being there. Fortunately with The Swell Season, it was not only a great venue, but an amazing show as well.

To have Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova perform songs from The Swell Season and the more well known soundtrack to the movie "Once" would be enough to please most concert goers. But they made this show special with Glen's old band, The Frames backing them up, as well as a horn section.

Their songs are great, the covers of Van Morrison (Astral Weeks) and Bruce Springsteen (Drive All Night) were amazing, especially with Clarence Clemmons' nephew playing on the Springsteen cover. The band chooses a cover to do every show based on geography. Bruce was picked because of his close proximity to NYC.

What was amazing to me is that they played for over 2 1/2 hours and I never looked at my watch, that's how good they were. They are some of the most honest, spiritual and genuine musicians I have ever seen and I recommend strongly that you see The Swell Season should the opportunity arise.[youtube]
