...and here we is, in Texas yet."

It's a shameful truth that I've lived in Texas for more than a dozen years and never been west of Mineral Wells (and Possum Kingdom State Park -- LOVE the name of that park).

Next month, that's going to change. A friend and I are driving from Dallas down to Big Bend National Park. That's a lot of driving. We're going to need music. A whole lot of music.

I'm assembling a road-trip playlist of artist who were either born in Texas or make/made their base here. My research has boggled my mind. Even without counting the music powerhouse Austin has become (which I do), this state has produced a staggering amount of talent

Right now, it's 62 artists long, with another 18 in my iTunes shopping cart, waiting for me to commit and pony up.

This is where you come in.

Who are your favorite Texas artists? If I've missed a shining star of the Texas pantheon, set me straight. I promise to give any suggestions a fair audition, even if I ultimately choose not to include them in my final picks.

The list of strong contenders, so far...

I think you might have enough already to make it to Big Bend and back - twice! :-) I never made it to Big Bend even though I lived in Texas for 8 years. I did go to Hueco Tanks State Park (outside El Paso) several times. I'll be sure to pass your thanks on to my musical Texan father-in-law...I see he made it to your list :-))) You've got all my Texas favorites covered. There is one novelty song that was played around Austin in the late 80s - Joe King Carrasco's Party Weekend (it's not on lastfm). At that time it was called Nuevo Wave-o, which I thought was funny. Mabye it's more nostalgia than a real favorite. Also recently got Amy Atchley (CD Baby $5). She has a very sweet voice. You can hear her on her MySpace. Have fun on this road trip! -Jenn

What no Townes Van Zandt?! Check out Kimmie Rhodes too. We went to Big Bend last year. You are going to love it. If you like a long(ish) hike with the most amazing views and beautiful and varied surroundings walk the South Rim in the Chisos. I will never forget it. Oh and take a wallow in the mudholes next to the Río Grande too!
