Os Mutantes didn't even come close to it; Novos Baianos was the best brazilian band that has ever existed.

Disfarça e Chora) being the best album in the world, of course.

brazilian albums that you have to listen to at least once before you die
Dez 9 2006, 16h42
yet another list, i know. so, yeah, these are the awesomest brazilian albums of all times, in my opinion (in alphabetical order):
Wave (actually, you should listen to anything by jobim at some point of your life)
Baden Powell & Vinícius De Moraes - os afro-sambas de baden powell & vinícius de moraes
Caetano Veloso [1967]
Caetano Veloso [1969]
Caetano Veloso [1971]
Transa (i could put at least 3 more caetano albums, (the guy is god) but i think that's enough already)
Cartola [1974]
Construção (genius, genius)
Elis Regina e Tom Jobim - elis & tom (for those who don't know, tom jobim = antônio carlos jobim. this is the album with the classic version of águas de março (waters of march); just beautiful)
Gal Costa [não identificado]
Expresso 2222
Gilberto Gil [1968] (probably my favorite tropicália album)
Gilberto Gil [1969]
A Música Livre de Hermeto Pascoal
Amoroso/Brasil (i should listen to joão gilberto more. quoting miles davis: "he could read a newspaper and sound good")
A Tábua de Esmeralda (you should probably check "áfrica brasil", too. i think it's a little bit overrated, though)
Jacarandá
Clube Da Esquina (it's actually by Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges, but last.fm is lame. this is one of the greatest albums of all times, brazilian or not, btw)
Acabou Chorare
Os Mutantes
Mutantes
Rogério Duprat - a banda tropicalista do duprat (duprat was the producer of tropicália; some call him the "brazilian george martin", but i think he was more inventive than him. this is a cover album, with stuff ranging from Flying to jobim and de moraes' chega de saudade, all with a tropicália touch)
Racional (brazilian funky stuff. it was cooler when it hadn't been released on cd, though ;)
Estudando o samba (todos os olhos, his s/t and 2006's estudando o pagode are also worth checking out)
p.s.: check Hermeto Pascoal playing glass bottles (!!!!) and flute (even when it's under water), while in the water:
