The 07' Mixtape

Earlier this year I swore to myself to never again make a playlist/mix. It seems like a lot of music loses its power when songs are simply "singles". For the most part, I've followed this unwritten law for about a year.

Until yesterday.

Last week I learned/discovered/realized you can tape the radio. For most people that doesn't sound too amazing, but there are two local radio programs here (global music and a weird-Classical program) on a non-commercial station that I never get the chance to listen to. One is on Saturday night and the other on Sunday morning. After I taped both programs and listened to them (the global program didn't tape right and the classical program was, frankly, boring) I realized I could create an old-school "mixtape" of an assortment of songs.

Since I'm not the most media-savvy person ever, I considered this a worthy challenge for both my musical taste and my electronic mastery. The end result is an assortment of seemingly random songs that I tried to arrange to flow from one to another. In some cases the tracks aren’t even the best songs by the selected artists, but just “made sense” in the order of the tape.

So here it is: radar's mixtape of 07'

Side A:
1. Mare - Sun For Miles
If you’ve familiar with this band, this is “that weird vocal track at the end of Palaces”
2. mewithoutYou – Orange Spider
Yes. I’m crazy.
3. Genghis Tron – The Folding Road
Doesn’t it just make sense to go from mwY to electronic-grindcore?
4. Norma Jean – Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste
It’s just the part with Aaron Weiss. Seriously.
5. Eluveitie – Of Fire, Wind & Wisdom
FOLK METAL!!
6. Psalters – Solemn Collects/Amal
Because any song about a girl playing while bombs drop around her deserves at least 4 minutes and 23 seconds of my time.
7. Listener & EQ – Backwoods Preacher Man
Possibly the coolest intro track ever…
8. Listener & EQ – Ozark Empire
…and the intro can’t stand along, now can it?
9. Daedelus – Sundown
Weird. Trippy. Electronic.
10. mewithoutYou – (A)
Yes, I know, I already have a bunch of mwY on here, but it’s just a transition track.

Side B:
11. Radiohead – Idioteque
I just got “Kid A” and already it’s one of my favorite tracks.
12. The White Stripes – The Denial Twist
This is quite possibly one of my favorite White Stripes songs. It’s quirky, rockin’ and most importantly: fun.
13. mewithoutYou – Silencer
Do I need to explain why?
14. Kaki King – First Brain
The way the trumpet is brought out at the end gives me goosebumps.
15. mewithoutYou – I Never Said That I Was Brave (acoustic)
It’s too bad their old bass player left. He had a great voice. And I’ve definitely broken the playlist rule of including an artist only once by now.
16. Dustin Kensrue – Blanket of Ghosts
Great lyrics. Great musician. Great side project.
17. Johnny Cash – The Man Who Couldn’t Cry
I smile and laugh every time I hear this. What better way to end a mixtape?
