  • What shall I do?

    Jan 28 2006, 4h10

So, I'm doing what I usually do, listening to music, over and over again if possible, but then well, theres always a bunch of stuff I've been wanting to listen to for a while which I just never got around to... Now, I come up with a problem: I can either listen to the stuff I really like, this is not limited by anything really, because what I really like can be specific songs, or specific artits... but, theres always the songs I havent bothered hearing properly yet, I've heard them, I know a lot of them are really nice I've just never gotten around to associtating the music with the titles, so I dont listen to them quite as often. Then theres a few artists, I know I like them as well, but I haven't gotten around to listening to them. I could just turn on shuffle and let it jump around my playlist, but then I can't keep track of what I've heard and what I havent.

So anyway, I haven't made up my mind whether I want to listen to the new stuff or the old stuff, theres the thing that I know the old stuff is good, but the new stuff might be better, or it might just be horrible. I've been told (by RavingLunatic, most recently) that I dont quite listen to the stuff I've already listened to enough, that I move on too fast. Well, while that is true to a point, I'm always looking for discovering a part of my collection again, something I had completely forgotten about or something I did not even know existed... Theres just so much music to listen to, but not enough time. I'm impatient, quite impatient. Theres just too much that I like, and a lot that I dislike. I'm usually quite polar about my likes and dislikes as well, things happen which make me sway one way or the other, there is no middle ground.

Anyway, as I was saying, there is a subset of my collection that I may not have heard, I know how to find it but I'm not sure if I'm ready to hear it yet. Therein lies my problem, to explore what I have forgotten or to just simply do what I do.

In the end, I suppose I shall do what needs to be done, shove unexplored music which I already own inbetween things I already know I like. I shall return once I have found what I am looking for. Maybe I'll end up with liking some more artists, as if I didnt have enough to like. Honestly, I like too much music. Then again, theres no such thing as too much music. Even so, I am pushing the limit.

If that did not make sense, well, all I can suggest is that stop trying to understand it, it's beyond you.
  • Expanding Definition of Music

    Jan 22 2006, 20h15

So, every now and then I go and get some music I've never (or barely) heard before, something someone I know may or may not have listened to. Sometimes, just sometimes, I find that I really like it.

Today, I have found The Sisters of Mercy, Front Line Assembly and Suicide Commando. I may have heard a few songs before from some compilation or off some online radio but they were never part of what I considered music. Well, they are now.

I have an ever expanding definition of music, what I don't like is not music to me. I usually start off listening to new artists in a rather haphazard manner, picking out stuff from random piles and just listening to it without paying attention to song titles and sometimes even the lyrics. Everything I like can be great background music, and if they're good enough I will notice them and listen to them over and over again till... well, I havent experienced the part that comes after that yet. Not with the music I really like. If I think its "ok", and only worth listening to as background music, it will always stay background music. I rarely find things I just plain don't like, but thats probably because in the chaos that is me, there is some subconscious order in existance that orders everything I do, even if I don't realize it.

I usually find artists from other peoples recommendations, my favorite artists have been found that way. But theres some which I will just find because I look for them. I rather like artists nobody has heard of, the artists that dont exist as far as anyone else is concerned. It's rare to find something good which has never been heard of, but just sometimes, I will find something that is... untainted. It is music created because someone wanted to create it, not to make money. Those are my favorites, in theory. Of course, since barely anyone ever listens to them, they dont have many songs. One of the artists that I found was ConseQuencE!, they are nice and also free (under the creative commons license). I doubt you have heard of them, but you should listen to them, for they are good.

My most played artists are of course, the ones that are slightly more "popular", maybe not in the general sense of the word, but if they have been heard they are popular by my definition of the word. I like to redefine words to meet my own requirements, this is me, get over it. My favorite artist is of course Ayria. You should have heard of them, if you haven't, I dont quite like you. My other favorites are Hungry Lucy, Cat Rapes Dog, NamNamBulu, Jack Off Jill and Funker Vogt. A lot of artists make it on my charts just because of the number of songs that I have of theirs, even if I dont like them quite as much as the others. My taste in music is also ever changing, along with my definition of "music".

I shall now end this entry, if you have read this far, you probably have way too much time. Everyone should listen to the artists I have mentioned here, and I mean everyone. Some are better than others, but Ayria is by far the best. Ayria is the legend that others must try to surpass, it may not be possible, but they must certainly try!

Well, I finally got my Flicker cd's! I would have gotten them about a month back but I wasn't here so I had to wait even longer! Weeeeeee!
I have to say Ayria completely blows my fucking mind. It's one of those things where no matter how many times I listen to it I never get fed up of it. I'll probably be listening to Debris and Flicker for the next few days over and over again!
I already had both albums but it's always nice to get FLAC's :D
