New music recommendations, anyone?
Abr 15 2009, 9h38
I've been away for a couple of weeks, or what seems like an eternity from the world of music, and while trying to catch up on work and emails, there's little or no time to browse the webs for the latest and greatest in new music to enrich my iTunes library with.
What have I missed? Any good recommendations? -
Röyksopp's back with Robyn and Lykke Li + more
Jan 5 2009, 15h37
The first good piece of news of 2009, musically speaking, is that Röyksopp is alive and kickin' and has posted some information on their long-awaited third album release. Junior, as it's called (strange, and maybe a little naughty, hey?), will be released March, 23rd. The first single, Happy Up Here, is out on March 12th. The official tracklist on Junior is:
1. Happy Up Here
2. The Girl And The Robot
3. Vision One
4. This Must Be It
5. Röysopp Forever
6. Miss It So Much
7. Tricky Tricky
8. You Don't Have A Clue
9. Silver Cruiser
10. True To Life
11. It's What I Want
Most importantly, though, is confirmed guest vocals by Robyn and Lykke Li, and also the return of Karin Dreijer of The Knife and (to my delightful surprise) Anneli Drecker. They sure know how to pick'em!

Forget the “Best of” lists – 2008 summarized in 3 words
Dez 30 2008, 18h44
Forget the “Best of” lists. Here's my 2008 summarized in 3 words:
The Polyamorous Affair
2008 was the year of discovery. And the greatest one of all was The Polyamorous Affair. So forget about the best albums list this year (which, in no particular order, would have included Grace Jones – Hurricane, Brooke Waggoner – Heal for the Honey, Cloetta Paris – Secret Eyes, M83 – Saturdays = Youth, The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of the Understatement, Portishead – Third, Robin Thicke – Something Else, Ladyhawke – Ladyhawke, Rubies – Explode from the Center, Goldfrapp – Seventh Tree, MGMT – Oracular Spectacular, Erykah Badu – New Amerykah, Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours, Sam Sparro – Sam Sparro) – I’m dedicating my end-of-the-year post to The P.A.
There was no one above, no one below, no one remotely close to releasing a better album than The Polyamorous Affair in 2008. Their self-titled, self-released debut is a journey through a strange, wondrous and magical land of catchy melodies, dance grooves and 80s retro disco sounds. The mystical and whimsical lyrics are sung by Eddie Chacon and Sissy Sainte-Marie, whose cool vocals and divine voice respectively is an undeniably good combination. Their music is happy, playful, positively vibrant and original. A bit quirky, yes, but still accessible. To me, this is as good as it gets.
So today, I think I’ll pat myself on the back for being one of the first listeners of The Polyamorous Affair here on Last.FM. There’s nothing quite like knowing you saw, or in this case heard, something special in an act before everyone else. It’s just a matter of time before hipsters out there will really take notice and embrace this lovable duo and their captivating music. Because if you’re at all interested in electronic music of any kind, you WILL be hearing about this duo in 2009. If you were quick enough on your feet and got a chance to listen to their new track White Hot Magic which was up only a few days on their MySpace page during their 12 days of holiday gifts, goodies, and giveaways, you’d agree. Newly signed to the L.A based label, Manimal Vinyl, The Polyamorous Affair is already recording new material for their second album, Bolshevik Disco, due out in the summer.
If you’re lucky enough to live in the L.A area, catch their live show some time – it’s appearantly quite amusing.

One last note of ‘08:
It wouldn’t be right to leave out Phildel in this last post of 2008. She’s another huge discovery this year – an incredible talent who has just signed with Warner Chappell Music Publishing. Her unofficial and very limited edition release, Strange Inventions, was a favorite of mine this year.
Thanks for a great 2008 and a happy 2009 to you all! -

The Hypelist [ October 11th - October 18th ]
Out 12 2008, 15h57
Here's this week's hypelist:
- Nouvelle Vague - This Is Not America (Featuring Juliette Lewis)
I don't remember ever hearing the original song, a collab between David Bowie and Pat Metheny Group. Whether it does it justice or not I could care less. There's something about Juliette's voice that gets to me. It's strong, raw and beautiful.
- Jenny Lewis - Pretty Bird
So sad, so good.
- Electric Valentine - 2 of hearts
Blogsters (+ me) have been going gaga over the Annie take on the Stacey Q hit, but I think this one actually is slightly better.
- Anjela - No Way (Remix) (Feat. Future)
MySpace-discovery via EQ.
- Mirror -
Nowhere (feat. Frances Lawson)
Where did this voice come from? It's gorgeous.

It's a hard-knock life, Annie...
Out 4 2008, 13h29
Nö Music reports that the release of Annie's album Don't Stop has been pushed back to 2009. Dan Roberts of the Norwegian music focused online editorial sources Dagbladet in stating:
...the album is set to be delayed until 2009, news that will be a great blow to both Annie and her fans. Despite the reports of executive unhappiness with the lack of hits so far, Annie’s Norwegian manager Kathrine Synnes claims that the album’s release is being delayed so that they can take the product back to the studio and spend more time perfecting it. Which might mean either that the label is unhappy with the singer’s work, or that they want to create a different record from what has leaked to ensure that sales do not suffer as a result.
I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry. Maybe both? I feel sadness for Annie because this album has already been delayed many times. I'm sure she just wants to be done with it already. I feel happy because this means we might get to hear new takes on songs on the leaked version (which I shamefully own). Who knows, maybe they'll put some new songs on it? Like the awesome cover of Stacey Q's Two Of Hearts? -
The Hypelist [ October 4th - October 11th ]
Out 4 2008, 12h29
Here's this week's hypelist:
- Kalle J - When you see me
Swede Kalle J heavily samples
Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel in this modern disco jem.
- Bertine Zetlitz - Islands In the Stream (feat. Thom Hell) (Hell Sessions)
The original duet with Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers is a terrible guilty pleasure of mine. Bertine Zetlitz delivers a stripped down version featured on her In My Mind 1997 - 2007 - Best Of Bertine Zetlitz compilation.
- Bryn Christopher - Sour Times
Starting to sense a theme here? Bryn Christopher does an amazing cover the Portishead classic. Should be featured on a James Bond soundtrack!
- Saint Etienne - This Is Tomorrow
I know, I know - another Saint Etienne song. Does this obsession ever end? No. This British band is after all one of the greatest bands in the history of the world in my (not so) very humble opinion. Why you say? Well, they helped define the whole indie dance genre for one. And they're not afraid to cross genres. Indie pop, alt rock, synth pop, downtempo, trip hop, drum n bass - they've done it. They've also released a multitude of compilation of unreleased songs and rarities for their fans only. That speaks volumes. So back to the reason this track made it's way onto the list. Three words: Co-written by Annie. If you listen very, very closely, you'll hear Annie's voice on the chorus. This is Tomorrow will be on (the eagerly awaited) London Conversations that also features the 2008 remake of
Burnt Out Car featured on the Hypelist a couple of weeks ago.
- Rockettothesky - The Dead Dead Water Lily Thing
Quirky and epic.

The Killers - Human
Set 22 2008, 12h54
Today the new The Killers single
Human was unleashed to the airwaves. I've had a listen or two, or three, to the song already (five by now actually, but who's counting) and felt compelled to write a quick entry to say that this song is brilliant in all its synth pop goodness. Fans of the more indie rock sound of the band ala Sam's Town could be in for a mighty disappointment when they hear this very catchy, upbeat, actually almost danceable tune. Human has got me very excited about the album, indeed. Day & Age, is set to be released November 26th.
