Sat 29 Aug – Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard, Tiger MCs, lucky james boyce, Jack Lewis & Fishermen Three
Jack Lewis comes on first with his ‘Fishermen Three’, sporting cut off jeans trainers and socks, a winning combo! My friend and me agreed that Jack has an interesting singing voice, which sounds in parts, a little like Stephen Malkmus or Daniel Johnston. His songs don't flow in the same way as his brothers seem to or feature so many jokes, the songs sound a bit awkward which strangely is part of the appeal.
Whilst Jack was doing his thing I slipped out to find refreshments and spotted Jeffrey Lewis selling his wares. I headed over to buy a copy of his comic "Fuff" which featured a tale about his dads car being torn apart by bears amongst other things.
Jeff's following seems to have grown since last time I saw him in Norwich, supporting Quasi, people pile into the venue until it is full and a bit sweaty. We wonder if this is because it's a Saturday night, or if Jeffrey Lewis has reached a kind of cult status.
It's great to see the two brothers playing together, several tracks from "City and Eastern Songs" are bought to life including "Anxiety Attack" and "Posters."
The gig is a showcase for the new album "Em Are I" by Jeffrey Lewis and the Junkyard. "Roll bus Roll" "Bugs and Flowers" and "End Result" are the tracks I immediately recognise.
The brothers play my favourite track from "12 Crass Songs" an album of Crass covers by Jeffrey Lewis "Banned from the Roxy."
For me it's the parts where Jeffrey sings the songs accompanied by his comic book that set him apart from anyone else you will see live. Halfway through the gig he stops to have one of his comics called "Low Budget Detective Flick" projected onto the wall before us.
It's a limerick in noir style and goes like this:
" My name's Valencia, I'm one of the intelligencia, I've picked on you because I'm highly selective.
There's a man you must find, a criminal mastermind, known as the black post man for all the blackmail he's been sending".
I said "lady I've been through all this, maybe let's just cut to the twist, you're really him so why wait til' the ending?"
She said "you're a smart private dick but I'm hip to your trick, you're really her so cut out the pretending."
"
The gig ends with "No LSD Tonight" an older song which is the best encore I've ever seen with an acoustic guitar. The brothers are giving it their all and rocking out strings a flying, and we are left wanting more. Come back soon Jeff n Jack!
