I could go on and on forever but I won't lol. essentially, i just really really appreciated and was blown away by their astounding musicianship. so i recommend listening to Simon Werner a disparu and beginning with "au café" which is one of the final tracks. After that listening to "goo" would be good. "Mildred pierce" is a fantastic song on that album... yea idk i hope I helped lol I'll send you songs and stuff later bc I'm currently only on my iPhone. Yes, I typed this all on my phone. HELLLOOOO CARPAL TUNNEL

weird side note: I really became interested in Kim Gordon (their bass player)...I read all about her and looked into anything about her, all in a completely heterosexual fashion ofcourse lol. So she sang on the vast majority of washing machine which is why I chose that one next. Also, during an interview Thurston Moore said every song is headed by a different member of the group and that member writes the lyrics and chooses the sound (making it very personal) <--- I've always kept that in mind. so I listened to that album, then "goo" which is said to be their best. then, "sister", "experimental jet set, trash, and no star". I pretty much listened to their entire discography from end to beginning. and i really think that had a LOT to do with helping me understand them. its also very nice and warming to be able to notice the growth and transition in their music as the years progressed (while listening to the discog from early years to final years).

to be more specific, the first song I heard of Simon Werner a disparu was "au café". It's a French film so titles are obvi not in English... anyway, I listened to this soundtrack every single night... it became a really fun thing for me and I looked forward to it every night. Even now I still do it but not as often... Maybe a few nights out of the month I like to lay down and listen to it over and over. this album was the summation of years and years of their practice and to me reflected it all. The melodies are much more refined but remnants of the early noise years still remain. (which btw I now absolutely love). after having heard this I decided to do some research and I read and watched anything I could find that dealt with the sy. i simultaneously read and listened throughout the days... if I remember correctly, the album I listened to next was washing machine.. which again I totally fell in love with. (tbc -_-)

so yea they used random objects like cooking utensils and stuck them between the strings of their guitars and used them to manipulate the sounds their guitars would produce... and once the ideal sound was reached they would never fidget with the guitar again because it was to be used for strictly ONE song. they would tour with many many guitars bc obviously if they had a respective guitar for a single song, more than one would be needed. this fact alone led to the development of my respect for them. I learned that I had to give their music a chance and understand that they had intended for a distinct sound (even if that sound did remind me of white noise). sooooo, the first album i listened to (in entirety) was technically not even a real album but rather, a soundtrack. in 2011 the sy released an instrumental soundtrack for a film titled "Simon Werner a Disparu". I heard this and absolutely FELL IN LOVE with the music. (to be continued again, lol)

so basically it wasn't until not too long ago that i really really fell in love with the sonic youth. i'm pretty sure the first time i heard the sonic youth i was in the 6th grade or 7th grade... and i remember asking a friend of mine for recommendations of sonic youth music. I listened to what he recommended and absolutely hated it. I thought it was really distasteful noise and that was the last of the sonic youth I heard until recently... lol so time passed and another friend of mine (who also happens to be a big sonic youth fan) showed me some more of their stuff, though my negative sentiment still had not changed. except this time my friend shared some stories and info about them which semi caught my attention... what fascinated me the most were the stories behind the composition of the music and the absolute novelty of their creation methods. the vast early majority of their music was experimental; in the sense that it was indeed "noise". (to be cont.; stupid 1k character limit)
