  • Top 10 artists

    Out 22 2008, 0h34

Name your top 10 most played bands on Last.fm:
    1. The Cat Empire
    2. Jason Mraz
    3. Rufus Wainwright
    4. Tripod
    5. Ozomatli
    6. The John Butler Trio
    7. Xavier Rudd
    8. Final Fantasy
    9. Red Hot Chili Peppers
    10. The Bamboos

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
Not sure. Might have been Ocean.

What is your favorite album by 2?
WSWDWST, though Tonight Not Again is great too because it's live!

What is your favorite lyric that 5 has sung?
Something to do with chickens; a lot of it's in Spanish so I don't really understand. -innocent shrug-

How many times have you seen 4 live?
Zero. :( They're in Australia, and I'm not.

What is your favorite song by 7?
Probably Mana or Twist or something similarly upbeat.

What is a good memory you have involving 10?
Rocking out to the bass lines I suppose.

Is there a song by 3 that makes you sad?
Absolutely. The Maker Makes, as well as Dinner at Eight.

What is your favourite lyric that 2 has sung?
"Though it takes no time to fall in love, it takes you years to know what love is." And about a million others.

What is your favorite song by 9?
Lots; I like The Zephyr Song and By the Way and Can't Stop and Slow Cheetah and...

How did you get in to 3?
Something to do with having vaguely heard of him, deciding to listen to Hallelujah on the Shrek soundtrack, some months later randomly buying his 1st album, and then some months after that getting the rest of his albums from the library, by which time Release The Stars was about to come out. Seriously, it was just meant to be.

What was the first song you heard by 1?
I believe it was Hello. THANK YOU KATIE.

What is your favourite song by 4?
SO, SO MANY! Second Drawer Down is GREAT though.

How many time have you seen 9 live?
None; something to do with their shows selling out in 40 minutes...

What is a good memory you have involving 2?
Everything. In particular the concert two summers ago. Good times. :P

Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad?
    Not really...

What is your favourite album of 5?
Don't Mess With the Dragon, though Ozomatli is a stronger album IMO. I just like the sound of the former better.

What is your favourite lyric that 3 has sung?
"Wouldn't it be a lovely headline, Life is beautiful on the New York Times"

What is your favourite song by 1?
The Rhythm, Anymore, Panama, All That Talking, Saltwater, etc.

What is your favourite song by 10?
    Probably something with Alice Russell.

How many times have you seen 1 live?
None, again with the Australia thing.

What is your favourite album by 3?
Release the Stars. And Rufus Does Judy is super swell, especially the DVD.

What is a good memory you have involving 9?
My friend being surprised at how much I knew about them. Also, my mom whining about having to pick up Anthony Kiedis' autobiography from the library.

What was the first song you heard by 8?
The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead, courtesy of Mr Welby!

  • Of sweat and silence

    Dez 28 2007, 0h09

As I sit here at the computer at 4 in the afternoon, still in my pajamas, listening to Release the Stars, I reflect on the absurdity of music, and the various substances that my body secretes. What an interesting combination. My feet and hands are sweaty; my head is oily. I should go shower. But I am trapped here at the computer. I cannot leave halfway through Release the Stars. It is a physical impossibility. I was listening to my iTunes on Shuffle (a recent development). It began to play Do I Disappoint You. I immediately stopped Shuffling and put on the entire album. How does Rufus do it? How is his voice so good? (And why does he not keep it in such good condition when not being recorded for a CD or DVD? See his numerous bad performances of Between My Legs, in which he cannot sing either end of the register that he has written for himself). I also just realized that I know virtually none of the lyrics for the entire album. A wish of mine is to create a database of the meanings for his songs. I'm sure someone out there has done this already, in which case I hope we find each other sooner rather than later.

The fact that music happens in phases always confuses me. I listened to Jason Mraz, Daniel Bedingfield, the Backstreet Boys, and *NSync (how do you spell that again?) when I was 11. Then they sat on a shelf for a few years, and then a lightbulb went off and Jason and Daniel were in the player once again. A sudden Shrek epiphany, and Rufus Wainwright is my favourite musician, even though I had heard virtually none of his music. He called to me somehow. It makes no sense. I think I feel a familiarity with him, though. Something to do with his enormous ego, and maybe the fact that he speaks French. Occasionally he is humble. Sort of. Maybe it's the fact that there is an idiotic attraction to that which I cannot have (i.e. gay men). I really don't understand that one. Not just for Rufus...

I haven't yet watched my Rufus Does Judy DVD, but I bet it's super good. I think I have all of 3 music DVDs: Matchbox Twenty, All I Want (Rufus), and Rufus Does Judy. Yet I haven't quite bought Poses, or either of his Wants. Yay for the library. Money is ridiculous. It's quite possibly even more confusing than music, though I think I can truthfully say that I don't like it as much. Though I would take a dollar over 50 Cent any day (admittedly, that's just good math).
