    ...how true...
  • If I Wanted To - Melissa Etheridge

    Dez 19 2008, 15h35

If I wanted to I could do anything right
I could dance with the devil on a
    Saturday night
If I wanted to I could turn matches to gold
I could smoke drink swear and I would never
    grow old
I wouldn't have to be in love with you
    If I only wanted to
    If I only wanted to

If I wanted to I could run fast as a train
Be as sharp as a needle that's
    twisting your brain
If I wanted to I could turn mountains to sand
Have political leaders in the palm of my hand
I wouldn't have to be in love with you
    If I only wanted to
    If I only wanted to

    I could leave tonight
And I would be all right
    Stop holding on
    If I wanted to
    If I only wanted to

If I wanted to I could be as patient as death
Fix this hole in my heart
    leaking into my flesh
If I wanted to I could turn sparks into ice
    There'd never be another
    woman who could make you
    think twice
I wouldn't have to be in love with you
    If I only wanted to
    If I only wanted to

Premature lyrics. Nonetheless, they capture the feeling:
Deserving a Feast, Starving for Scraps.

Been a long time since I've heard this song.

How hard should you hit? Charles Monroe Kane takes back the power. Or pisses off an entire generation. You tell me.

The only word I could think of was "Holy Shit."

I wish I had more profound thoughts, but I am speechless, having just listened on TTBOOK (To The Best Of Our Knowledge) to Charles Monroe Kane's tirade / attack / manifesto AGAINST the Baby Boomer generation & their nostalgia.

I've heard other tirades, tongue in cheek. I searched for any hint of humor in his presentation and found none.

Ripped from one end to the other, I've got to listen next week for the Boomer response. Last NPR anti-boomer tirade I heard, clearly tongue in cheek, raised numerous Boomer hackles. What will this one do?

At the same time, I'm going to need to listen to this program again, http://www.wpr.org/book/080824a.html. Listen to his points. And hope my brain can get past the passion to the points.

Great Radio Article! Very good work, once again sculpted in the stellar hands of Wisconsin Public Radio staff. I'm looking forward to see this now opened dialogue plays out...
  • Ibrahim Maalouf - Spectacular!

    Jan 28 2008, 5h23

    Incredible! What a musician!!

Ibrahim Maalouf plays quarter-tone trumpet in classical and middle eastern styles, as well as fusion. He was featured on BBC's "The Ticket" tonight.

Blew me away! I've been searching and I've found only two sources for his album, amazon.fr and his own home page (but you have to leave your email address).

    Check him out:

Any clue how to get ahold of albums not available in the States??

The clips on BBC were diverse and amazing - as is the photo album on his site. ;-)

His interview is well-worth listening to, beyond his music. He's got a great approach to / understanding of his audiences. ENJOY! melo
  • HIGHLY Recommend: Kris Doty & her band

    Jan 6 2008, 18h27

    Kris Doty @ Pengilly's - Saturday January 5

We were driving, chatting about about our lives, and finally I realized we were driving in circles around the downtown. At the same time, my cousin interrupts herself and apologizes for driving in circles, but she's looking for The Red Door Bar (or at least that's what I heard).

We found a great parking spot, rare in Bodo (Boise Downtown). As we started walking, it started to snow harder. Within 5 minutes, we were in front of "the red door bar". Turns out my attempts to find a sign that read "The Red Door Bar" were all in vain. And the bar we drove by earlier, that I'd said, "Hey, Pengilly's. Is that an Irish Pub? Wouldn't it be a kick to go to the country bar, Pengilly's - if it's an Irish pub, and then the Hip Hop bar?" Joking, because that would've been the most bars I'd been to in a year...

The red door bar is Pengilly's. What a great atmosphere! Small, red walls, cozy. The drinks were decent - Great dirty martini. Not so great, but drinkable Sweet Brandy Old Fashion - I've got to try to make my own. No one makes them like they do at the Italian restaurant in Minoqua. Pretty good chocolate martini, though some decorative chocolate sauce droozles would be a nice added touch. The setting is unbeatable as a bar goes - nice old bar, wall of high backed wooden booths, a few tables in the center and a small corner for the band. It was perfect.

There happened to be a band setting up when we went in. The band turned out to be Kris Doty (and her band).

You MUST hear Kris Doty! Check out http://www.myspace.com/krisdoty. Her voice is ethereal and powerful. The band is very talented - I spent much of the night watching the fingerwork of her lead guitarist, when I wasn't discussing life, love, and religion with my cousin. The bass guitarist doubles as a cellist. His sound is reminiscent of Jorane. I would like to adequately comment on the drum player, but I know little of percussion. This is a must hear group.

In this bar, I couldn't catch the lyrics - probably because we were under one speaker and about 10 feet away from Kris herself. We had a great view of the band. So, I did a brief search and now am in the process of downloading her album from DigStation.

Her interesting, complex voice comes through even more clearly on her mp3 tracks. Even if her voice had sucked, it'd be worth a trip to see the band just for the cellist. I'd never seen a cello "rock" in person before - just heard it on Jorane's albums.

I'll be keeping an eye out for more Kris Doty gigs -- Highly Recommended!
  • Clay Pigeons

    Jul 13 2007, 3h35

Not the kind you shoot - though I'd like to try that someday. I'm thinking now about the movie soundtrack.

I was listening tonight to the radio program _On Point_ (which had a beyond startling discussion re: camera surveillance of American public spaces. Unbelievably, most callers completely supported this. Don't even get me started. Bloody short-sighted.) As I was saying, I was listening to On Point online and then went to

    Three hurrahs! ! !

... PublicRadioFan.com to see what else was on during the psycho-sexual analysis of Tough Girls (which actually explained alot about this new crop of teenagers I see at work). Ran into a show, Hillybilly Fever on WDVX. They played some great stuff. The last one I heard was Don Gibson's TocarSea of Heartbreak. Which reminded me of Clay Pigeons. Which sent me off to find & play the CD a couple hours ago.

I don't get why I love this soundtrack. I liked the movie and at the same time found it terribly disturbing (why? i don't recall I saw it a long time ago). But the soundtrack is so _______ (insert dynamic, unusual, effusive word here).

Maybe it's all the steel guitar. That, actually, is probably it.

    MUST find!!

Twangy country - Let me just say how much I love PublicRadioFan.com.

Finally getting into the cleaning I needed to do, the streaming radio station I was listening to (This American Life) switched shows. I didn't even notice it. I'm scrubbing the floor and I hear this incredibly cheeky country twang. OMG!

I had to find out more... She used to be in a punk band. Sees strong similarities between country and punk. She also worked with Bon Jovi.

    Kitty Rose

On the last song they featured not only was she twangy, but there was an accordion playing prominently. Yum!

I must get back to the floors now.

Think: Music, Gaelic, Men in Kilts, and lots of redheads. Other people might also enjoy the sea of beer and booze (including mead), the genealogy opportunities, and the tug of war contests.

Did I mention the red heads and the kilts?
