Nov 10 2007, 11h33Very poorly organised event. The lack of a stage made visibility sporadic; not helped at all by the performers sitting on chairs or, worse, on the floor.
Pausal arriving late off-set the length of the subsequent performances - thanks guys, I could only catch 10 minutes of Grouper because I had to get the last train home. Pausal themselves offered *nothing* new to the ambient/dreamscape/drone scenario. Slow super 8 films - gosh, that's original...A poor man's Epic45. Need to get out more.
Gareth Hardwick's non-performance took ambient rather too literally, as he was almost completely drowned out by coughs, yapping and rattles from the kitchen. I'm sure he's a talented guy but this just wasn't the right place to listen to him.
Daniel Higgs and Chiara Giovando : very odd, very dour, very funny and therefore livened things up. Too bad that they were cut short by the promoters flashing the houselights on, ie : Shut the fuck up, you've run over your time.
Grouper, as I say, I only caught 10 minutes of. But it was enough to prompt me to buy 2 of her albums on the rush out to catch the train. It was more of a seance than a gig for those 10 minutes.
I won't be going to a night here again though - at least, not until they get a stage, change the DJ, have a word with the barstaff, book some bands who can compete with the room. -

Nov 10 2007, 11h45It was better sitting down at the front, I can understand it not being so enjoyable from anywhere else - not sure you would have seen or heard very much. Why didn't everyone just sit down? -

Nov 10 2007, 13h23I think it's a difficult room for any performance, personally. Anything over 20/25 people would create viewing problems.
And it's a mistake to have ambient music so close to a bar. If I'd known before, I wouldn't have gone but I put these things down to experience.
I'm very much enjoying the 2 Grouper albums I bought! (At home, with no distractions). ;)
Jealous that you saw The Necks on Sunday. -

Nov 11 2007, 11h34I've lived outside of London for most of my life and thus suffer the end of night train rush on a regular basis! I understand this frustration very well and I'm extremely sorry if I've have been the cause. We left for the venue with far more time than needed, but there are too many people driving into each other on the roads!
A further apology for the Daniel Higgs light saga? Following 4 hours in traffic and an uncomfortable performance I found I was able to relax for the first time during the mans set. Only! at one point I became too relaxed and lent against the wall, as I did this I found the whole bar was bathed in light! On the bright-side (as it were) if I'd not done this some people may not of had any time with grouper:) get out more I think it would be far safer for me to stay in.
The venue was terrible for sure, but Grouper certainly managed to achieve some intimacy and solitude in the space. I look forward to seeing her again. She was like magic (Wintersport.... I owe you a ticket for her next show and sorry again friend).
RegardsAlex
