nice to hear from u! .there was this deal recently in ireland that when u buy chocolate bars you get free downloads. so i ate myself sick just to have more music.so i chose bregovic and oi va voi. most songs i liked are from "laughter through tears" , there werent any earlier albums available. as to their new album "travelling the face of the globe", i ididnt like the lead vocalist. oi va voi is funny but it is more laidback, chillout music than anything folk. nice tunes, but, like many London projects, kind of plastic. best for me so far is "ladino song", kind of trip hop, but still KT Turnstall makes it unique. great you will get to know some of brother quay! they made one film "benjamenta institute" that was released on vhs only. it's really a shame cause it is one their best.

yes well wrestler is pure hollywood. brothers quay make animations using paper mache and wood models. kinda old school polish animations from 1960s. with an organic feel to it , beautiful atmosphere and music . very eastern european and jewish in spirit. there is music by a polish composer leszek jankowski. this is really unforgettable experience, brothers quay!

"requiem" has great atmosphere and acting, especially ellen burstyn, but is it pehaps too theatrical - too many saturated images and filters. i was wondering if you know animations and films by brothers Quay? returning to aronovsky, i have seen "wrestler" but it's different cinema altogether. i prefer poetic.

hiya again! yes i agree- these old good school actors where with expressive and wise faces! you dont get to see such actors often in cinema nowadays. especially kaidanovsky in "stalker" is astounding. i also like banionis's performance in "solaris". as to kronos i sadly know them from soundtracks. one for "requiem" is my favourite is well- the central motive, i think it's "lux aeterna", is haunting; you can listen to it over and over again. i didnt pay attention to their soundtrack for "fountain" because this film annoyed me, it was so exagerrated and artificial, just like rachel weisz who acts a bit like a doll. but "pi" i absolutely adore, cause it's very kabbalistic, visionary - a bit like old expressionist German movies from 1930s.

you are right, sometimes the sound on the studio albums of ckb is kinda flat and hollow. perhaps they feel more free playing life, and this music needs more space to fly around the walls and higher into air. as to tarkovsky, i love his films too! this is to me poetic expression of the eastern european melancholia. i have seen all of them except "nostagia" - his last film shot in italy - and "sacrifice", of which i have watched just about a half. my favourite is the trio of "solaris", "stalker" and "mirror". "mirror" is perhaps the most visionary and moving. "stalker" is hypnotic, especially the long shots of a stream of water, and a 5min or so ride on railway tracks. great director, i think russia's best! i noticed you like clint mansell, do you know his soundtrack for "requiem for a dream"?

one other thing, have you seen "moon" by duncas jones? this is best sci-fi since tarkovsky's "solaris". i have it twice already, and last sunday the director was doing an intro speech before the screening. there is great soundtrack by clint mansell that reminds me of a lost recording by radiohead. definetely recommended!

hiya lame! thanks so much for the concert tracks. this is pure magic and even before balan and tribute to bruno schulz. these guys have a great rapport with their music, you can feel that they understand each other without words. i think my favourite is mementoo mori, less melodic and more broken and eccentric, kind of a prologue to later albums by ckb. also more dark than the album version. i am always fond of ets hayyim especially when the the leitmotif kicks in the second half. recollection of the past is a bit orientalised by the darbuka that i didnt catch of the originals song. gil gil - crystal clear. as to "klezmer rahpsody" i am not a huge fan, because i gets kinda squere and pompous later in the song. the prayer is one of my favourites. kinda gothic in flavour. all in all songs theitr live sound is very clear and bright sometimes better than the album version, less restrained...
