I don't know what's up with Ambassador. I haven't heard anything other than the vagueness on the CMR website, but I hope everything works out for the best.

That is a great film! I was a nervous wreck about the little dog that fell in the hole and was trapped under the floor. I think that was the most stressful scene in the entire film for me ;-)

yep. i'm talking about music as an aesthetic choice. not to forget either that in Hollywood, the "synergy" of media conglomerates virtually requires a heavy music presence for future soundtrack sales . . .

Ah Netflix, one of those things I wanted to take with me. There's a version over here but it kind of sucks . . . I'm currently celebrating Michael Haneke Week over on my Facebook page. His new film, which just won the Golden Palm at Cannes, apparently doesn't have a score. I saw French film like that ages ago. Two music credits at the end: one for Happy Birthday sung during the film; the other for the Brahms piece during the closing titles. Hilarious. Quiet dramatic film. I didn't miss the music and only realized the absence when I read the credits . . . Oh and stop driving your wife crazy--commit to your list! ;-)

yay!! I don't know that many people who've seen it, so it will be cool to find out what you think. It continues to haunt me, perhaps because it's based on a true story, but more likely because of the performances. I was so thrilled that the young actor playing the son was awarded Best Actor in Cannes the year the film was released. He was the youngest ever. ;-)

Oh Kitano . . . beautiful. With James Brown gone, I think Kitano definitely qualifies as the hardest working man in show business. ;-) I saw Dolls late night on TV here and was blown away. I'd love to see it on the big screen though. Since we are on the topic of Japanese film music and they way it creates space, have you seen Nobody Knows? It's the story of four young children abandoned by their mother in a small apartment in Tokyo. The music is beautiful and haunting just like the film. This song from the film by Gontiti is absolutely sublime: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or4QaTkBXPg&feature=related

Yeah I haven't really heard any of their new stuff. I dig the hell out of Skye Edwards and Morcheeba without her just doesn't compute.

Thanks Jonathan and likewise! Life, I suppose. I came to Berlin to do a doctorate on the hip hop scene here, and after finishing decided to try living here for real. Great decision, as Berlin is ridiculously cool.

Well, I used to live in Harlem (now post K and Post G New Orleans). So the Schaum was like a 20 minute walk. I was in the Schaum with a visitng friend from ATL. She had a short afro(?) and we were like, Hey that's Angela Davis. We were staring, she smiled, and we introduced ourselves. Dang, I missed Harlem
