I never can get into to the music of techno-culture. For me, it has something very strange. But the first time I had problems to understand music was 1970 with "Ain't It Funky Now" by James Brown. I was 16 then. That was a piece without harmonies. I thought that was incredible. Although I had already listened to music that was not based on harmony, progressive rock with long improvisation points where there was no longer a chord scheme and no more cadences, but that was still recognizable as individual articulation. "Ain't It Funky Now " was just funky. And that was in the charts.

Hi Jen! You're right. It's really hard to decide - John Fahey (Blind Joe Death) and Incredible String Band (Earthspan) would be great... My own musical journey into the past would be something like New York City in 1961 or so. Bob Dylan plays with Dave Van Ronk in the Gaslight Cafe. Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp. Or a scene that can be seen on YouTube as movie: The Exploding Plastic Inevitable show with the Velvet Underground. Tony Conrad and John Cale left the Theatre of Eternal Music and experiment in the Ludlow Street. That would be the era, probably.

Suppose you had the chance to have a time machine that would take you to a historic musical event. What would it be?

Déjà vu - In the band Crosby, Stills, Nash I always liked Neil Young. It was his very personal, confused, engaging style that led me through this music... My first beautiful experience with music was with the Beatles. When I was about six years old, I heard the first time a song I was able to reproduce inside my head, even if it was sung in a foreign language, it was: "I want to hold your hand."

Thanks for you answer! The question is provocative a bit! I think in the pop music is the sound, the sound effect, the grain of the voice, the outfit, the non-musical specific, the important thing, the foreground. The music, however: the melody, the song, the composition is merely background.
