  • Albums played in 2009

    Jan 1 2010, 0h56

Scrobbler sorts tracks played into albums by their mysterious algorithm that may or may not reflect reality, but it's easier than me keeping track especially since I lost iTunes library twice this year. I intend to do my Top NEW albums of 2009 list, before 2010 is over, but I'll probably post that on No Depression (since I despise this little lost.fm editing window).

For now, here's the baker's dozen:

We Are All Alone In This Together New in 2009 Obviously my favorite CD of the year, by far
Between the Whiskey and the Wine New to ME in 2009
For a Decade of Sin: 11 Years of Bloodshot Records I just like this collection
    The Essential Bob Wills: 1935-1947
American Central Dust Like this album, spent alot of time hoping I would learn to love it
20 Of Hank Williams' Greatest Hits
Townes New. Not as good as the original, but the original isn't making new music these days
Into the Wild Great movie from the year before
Wishful Thinking HCoC came to visit this year
    Gravity's Our Enemy C-Sky
No Frills Friend No idea why I played this CD 81 times in 2009. No idea.
Midnight At The Movies I played this 80 times because its good. Maybe not great, but better than good.

I was looking thru the "Best of 2009" list that lost.fm has been putting up on our masthead week by week thru December. Of the top 20 I've heard of only 6. I played #21 once. Of the Top 50 I've played 5, mostly thru lost.fm radio going off bad tags.
For sport, I made up a playlist of 89 top tracks I did play in 2009. It's over there on the last.fm playlist tab, if you can play playlists (that's the price of membership I suppose). Graham Lindsey's on top of that list two.

  • Grammy Nominations for 2010: An Americana-ish List

    Dez 3 2009, 15h34

Selected nominations by the Recording Academy. Awards show airs 31 Jan 2010, on CBS.

It's nice to see the Academy recognize Taylor Swift as a "POP" star--Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Good luck to her where she shines. Willie Nelson's American Classic in Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album? Brad Paisley in Best Rock Instrumental Performance? I don't know about that.

Nice to see George Strait with a nod for Twang. Dierks Bentley & Patty Griffin for Beautiful World too. T. Bone Burnett get's a nomination for Production on Elvis Costello's Secret, Profane & Sugargane. And Neko Case has a bid for Best Recording Package--a good reason if you did the download thing to go find the real live CD. Look for more specifics below.

    Some interesting Categories:

The established categories seem a bit more, um, stable.

  • Travels with Townes

    Out 30 2009, 15h41

Found this story about Townes Van Zandt looking for something else.
...today, as back then, his (Townes') songs aren't for everybody. I'd say that nine out of ten people find his songs uninteresting at best. But that tenth person hears something exceptional in Townes. People who hear him are divided into two camps - devotees and those who couldn't care less. Over the years, I've noticed that those who are drawn to his songs are likely to be very down-to-earth and introspective. They tend to have a penchant for simplicity.
The author, Steve Hawley, goes on to tell some interesting tales on Townes circa 1970. He had this to say about the first time Pancho & Lefty took the stage in Nashville:
Townes never got the luxury of standing ovations when he came out with a new song. His songs are like new shoes. You have to wear them a while before they really feel like they belong to you.
    Sounds about right to me.

Edit: Kim @NoDepression blogged some deep thoughts on Pancho and Lefty while I was doing this. Checker her out.

  • Americana Music Association Nominees 2009

    Mai 21 2009, 18h19

More lists posing as journals composed inside the teeny tiny lost.fm edit box!

The 2009 Americana Music Association Honors and Awards Nominees are:

    ALBUM OF THE YEAR
    Real Animal, by Alejandro Escovedo
Written In Chalk, by Buddy and Julie Miller
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, by Jason Isbell
Midnight At The Movies, by Justin Townes Earle

    ARTIST OF THE YEAR
    Alejandro Escovedo
    Buddy Miller
    Justin Townes Earle
    Raul Malo

    INSTRUMENTALIST OF THE YEAR
    Buddy Miller
    Gurf Morlix
    Jerry Douglas
    Sam Bush

    NEW & EMERGING ARTIST
    Band Of Heathens
    Belleville Outfit
    Justin Townes Earle
    Sarah Borges

    SONG OF THE YEAR
“Chalk,” written by Julie Miller, performed by Buddy Miller & Patty Griffin
    “Country Love” by the Gourds
“Homeland Refugee,” by Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock, performed by The Flatlanders
“Rattlin’ Bones” Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson
    “Sex And Gasoline,” Rodney Crowell

    DUO GROUP OF THE YEAR
    Buddy & Julie Miller
    Flatlanders
    Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson
    Reckless Kelly

My impressions: I haven't spent much time with the Millers' Chalk. I do really like J.T.Earle's new songs. In fact I'm becoming quite impressed by young Earle's quality and range. John Conquest (3rd Coast Music News) is a long time sceptic of the AMA, but also a long time fan of Sarah Borges (rhymes with gorgeous, he says). I don't know the Belleville Outfit, but have been reading up on Band of Heathens. Might have put Micky and the Motorcars in this group. On the bottom line I'd think the Flatlanders would be the only acceptable choice--should be more like Group of the Decade, or Group touring Once a Decade.

Not a bad bunch. Could be better. Can always be better.

  • Kerrville 2009

    Abr 22 2009, 1h53

I've not yet been to Kerrville (in fact it's been a few years since I've set foot in the Republic of Texas), but I usually like the folks who like Kerrville. In fact, a local concert organizer here in Greater Minnesota recruits almost exclusively from artists on the Kerrville card. PR says the card is set:
The Kerrville Folk Festival at Quiet Valley Ranch, nine miles south of the Texas Hill Country resort community Kerrville, announces an exciting 2009 festival schedule for its 38th annual event. Once again this legendary songwriter's festival will run for 18 straight days, from Thursday, May 21 through Sunday, June 7, 2009. The entire weekend of May 29 - 31 will be broadcast live on Sirius XM Radio, The Village (XM 15), hosted by Mary Sue Twohy. For information and tickets please go to www.kerrvillefolkfestival.com.
The (yes) 18-day lineup for 2009 is an interesting mix of folks I like, folks I'd like to try, and alot of others of whom I just got no idea. It would be worth a trip to see even a few of these:
    Charlie A'Court
    Albert & Gage
    Austin Lounge Lizards
    Band Of Heathens
    The Belleville Outfit
    Rick Beresford
    Berkley Hart
    BettySoo
    Blame Sally
    Ray Bonneville
    Border Blasters
    Danny Britt
    Norton Buffalo
    Jonathan Byrd
    Chip & Marvin
    Bob Cheevers
    KC Clifford
    Kevin Connolly
    Cary Cooper

Now, I thought I saw somewhere that Nels Andrews was heading back to Kerrville, too, plus New Artist contestants (like Angela Easterling I've seen over on the No Depression ning), so I expect there's others announced or not that will be joining the party. Folks I know--ok, recognize--are linked above. Tips on any others?
