  • An In-Depth Look At My Top 10 Artists

    Jun 6 2007, 5h24

For each artist in your top 10 artists, name
    - your favorite song
    - your favorite album
    - your favorite lyrics
    - how you got started listening to them
    - last played

    1. Tori Amos
Favourite song : This is a nearly impossible task since I love nearly every song this woman has ever composed. I guess I will say TocarSpark since this is the first Tori song I fell in love with. I love everything about it, including the dark ambient melody and the brilliant and complex metaphor-laden lyrics.
Favourite album : I have to say Little Earthquakes This album changed my life when I heard it at 17 years old. I think it is her most personal album. It may not be the strongest musically, it has that annoying early 90s adult contempo feel to it at times, but I can relate to each song in some way. Tori really tore open her soul and let the contents bleed onto the tracks of this album. She does that in some way with every album, but I think she does it the best with Little Earthquakes.
Favourite lyrics : I have to go with the lyrics of "Precious Things" I think the entire song contains some of the best and most unique lyrics ever written. I especially love the lines "so you can make me cum that doesn't make you Jesus" and the line about the "demigods" and their "nine inch nails and little fascist panties" This song could serve as a biographical account of my pre-teen years.
How I started listening : It is embarrassing to say as a Toriphile, but I bought Strange Little Girls after hearing the title track on the radio. I always liked her songs, like Spark, but I did not know who did them. I hated SLG as a whole, but I loved the song Rattlesnakes enough to check out Little Earthquakes and Choirgirl, which I loved with all my heart.
Last Played : I played her wonderful cover of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" just a few minutes ago.

    2. Fiona Apple
Favourite song : TocarPaper Bag for sure. This is my all-time favorite song. I love the melody and the lyrics are pretty much an accurate portrayal of my love life lol.
Favourite album : I love them all, but When the Pawn was an album that I could really relate to in high school. It is so angsty, yet incredibly poetic.
Favourite lyrics : I love all of her lyrics. I can relate to them all in some way, but I would have to say all the lyrics to "The Way Things Are" could be mistaken for my life story <3 I especially love the chorus "Keep on calling me names keep on keep on. I'll keep kicking the crap till it's gone" It is so simple yet incredibly powerful.
How I started listening : I heard "Fast as You Can" on the radio when it came out in 1999 when I was 15. My mom's friend had both Tidal and When the Pawn, so I borrowed them from her. I fell in love with her instantly after hearing them.
Last Played : I played "To Your Love" a couple days ago. I haven't been listening to her as much because I have been burnt out on her music. Unlike Tori who has 80 million songs, Fiona only has 3 albums and a few cover songs. I can only listen to so much of the same stuff. I still love her, I always will, but I need a break.

    3. Regina Spektor
Favourite song : This is a tough one. Right now, my favorite song by her is an unreleased track called A cannon The melody is absolutely stunning and the lyrics represent everything I love about Regina. It contains simple language yet brilliant and complex metaphors and that quirkiness that makes Regina unique and wonderful.
Favourite album : 11:11 I really prefer obscure underground Regina to popular mainstream Regina, though I love the major label stuff too. Every single song on this album is brilliant. I think this album contains some of her best lyrics as well.
Favourite lyrics : I think I have to pick the lyrics of "Pavlov's Daughter" I think this song contains some of the most unique and intelligent lyrics ever written. I especially love the lines "If I hear another song about angels If I see another feather on the dumb-box
I'm gonna go to Babylon and get me some whiskey
Gonna go to Babylon and get me some whiskey now..."
How I started listening : I saw the video for "Us" a few years ago when Soviet Kitsch came out. I thought it was so beautiful I went out and bought the album the next day. I did not appreciate Regina's eccentric songs and persona back then, so the album just sat on my shelf. It wasn't until Begin to Hope came out that my interest in her was rekindled. I listened to Soviet Kitsch again and then I loved it more than BTH!
Last Played : I listened to "Bartender" about a half hour ago.

    4. Aimee Mann
Favourite song : TocarYou Could Make a Killing this is the song that made me fall in love with her. I love the moody electric guitar melody, her melancholy vocals, and the lyrics.
Favourite album : I have to say I'm With Stupid. This was my first Aimee album. Though some songs are better than others, I like each track in its own way.
Favourite lyrics : All her lyrics are great. I really love the lyrics to "It's Not Safe" since I can relate to them so much. "Don't you know that you're a fucking freak in this world?"
How I started listening : I heard "You Could Make a Killing" in the movie Cruel Intentions. I loved it so much I bought the soundtrack and played the song on repeat for months.
Last Played : I played "Amateur" a couple hours ago.

    5. PJ Harvey
Favourite song : TocarDown by the Water I love everything about this song. The haunting melody and lyrics are incredible.
Favourite album : I love the first four so much, but I have always had a predilection for To Bring You My Love
Favourite lyrics : The lyrics to "Sheela-Na-Gig" are absolutely brilliant. I especially love the lines "Gonna wash that man right out of my hair" and "Gonna take my hips to a man who cares" It is my favorite song about the pain of unrequited love
How I started listening : I had heard a lot of buzz about Stories from the City... and had seen the video for This is Love. I was intrigued by her and the album, but I did not fall in love with her until I decided to buy Dry, which is one of my favorite albums ever.
Last Played : I played "One Time Too Many" a couple hours ago.

    6. Ani DiFranco
Favourite song : Tocar32 Flavors This is the first Ani song I fell in love with. I can really relate to the lyrics and the melody is so beautiful and mellow.
Favourite album : Not a Pretty Girl I love everything about this album, including its title and artwork, done by Ani herself. I think this contains her best songs as well.
Favourite lyrics : All of her lyrics are brilliant, but the ones to "32 Flavors" are very important to me. I especially love these lines: "Squint your eyes and look closer I'm not between you and your ambition I am a poster girl with no poster I am thirty-two flavors and then some And I'm beyond your peripheral vision So you might want to turn your head Cause someday you might find you're starving And eating all of the words you said"
How I started listening : I had heard a lot about her on a local indie radio station. I actually bought Not a Pretty Girl on a whim after hearing so many good things.
Last Played : I heard a few songs by her earlier today.

    7. Kate Bush
Favourite song : TocarRunning Up That Hill This is the song that made me fall in love with her music. I never get sick of it.
Favourite album : Hounds of Love This was my first Kate album. I think it is incredible. Every song is a gem. I love the Dreaming too, but this one will always be special to me.
Favourite lyrics : I love the lyrics to "Hounds of Love" especially the lines "Now hounds of love are hunting I've always been a coward, And I don't know what's good for me" I can really relate to those lines.
How I started listening : I listened to her the same reason many people did. I was a huge fan of Tori's and everyone was saying that Kate was like the British Tori of the 80s. I don't necessarily agree with this, but I am grateful I checked her out.
Last Played : A couple days ago.

    8. Garbage
Favourite Song : TocarOnly Happy When It Rains This will always be special to me since it was my theme song when I was an angst-ridden, moody, pseudo-goth teenager.
Favourite album : Garbage Even though Version 2.0 was my first Garbage album, I think that the debut album is much better. I love v 2.0 too, but I like the songs on the self titled more.
Favourite lyrics : The lyrics to "Only Happy When It Rains" "I only smile in the dark My only comfort is the night gone black"
How I started listening : I bought Version 2.0 when I was fourteen after seeing the video for "I Think I'm Paranoid" and loving the song.
Last Played : Two days ago.

    9. Liz Phair
Favourite Song : TocarDivorce Song This is my favorite track from Exile In Guyvile and one of the first songs I really loved by her. I love the melody and I like the lyrics. They are written in simple language, yet she crafts many metaphors that effectively illustrate the details of a failed romantic relationship
Favourite album : Exile in Guyville This is Liz's indisputable masterpiece. No other album she has done compares to this one.
Favourite lyrics : "You put in my hands a loaded gun
And then you told me not to fire it When you did the things you said were up to me And then accused me of trying to fuck it up" from Divorce Song
How I started listening : I heard "Polyester Bride" on an Alternative radio station. I loved it so much I bought Whitechocolatespaceegg the next day.
Last Played : A couple days ago?

    10. Elliott Smith
Favourite Song : Single File A really beautiful and underrated song from his self-titled album. The lyrics really hit close to home and the melody gives me chills.
Favourite album : Elliott Smith This is his most mellow and minimalistic album musically, which is what I enjoy
Favourite lyrics : I'm a junkyard full of false starts And I don't need yr permission To bury my love under this bare light bulb The moon is a sickle cell It'll kill you in time" from Coming Up Roses, another great song from the self titled album.
How I started listening : I heard the song "Miss Misery" in Good Will Hunting, which was my favorite film for a while.
Last Played : A couple hours ago.

Makes an average of 151613.6 listeners. The average Last.fm-top10-band has 511217 listeners, so I am 29.66% Mainstream. Take the test at mainstream.freevicente.com

I guess I am not very mainstream lol. That's awesome! Though I swere I am not one of those elitist indie assholes who shun anything that has been broadcast over radio waves. I know I am just too big of a freak to be mainstream lol
  • A different type of survey: How weird am I?

    Jan 8 2007, 4h44

"Get your top 20 artists, and find which of their tracks you've played the most on iTunes/Windows Media Player. Then see where it comes in that artist's "most-played" lists. The lower the track in the list, the weirder you are...or something to that effect."

    1. Tori Amos
My top track: TocarRattlesnakes This is not my favorite Tori song, nor is it her best, since it is a cover, but I adore this song so much. This one song made the horrible Strange Little Girls worth my 13 dollars. It helps me mellow out.
Ranking: 72. That is not surprising. It is the best track off of Strange Little Girls, but it is a cover. Even though it is a great cover, it should not be high in Tori's top tracks.

    2. Fiona Apple
My top track: TocarPaper Bag This is my favorite Fiona song and my favorite song of all time. It is my most played track on last.fm. I love this song to death. I can listen to it over and over.
Ranking: 1. That is really interesting. I thought Criminal or one of her radio hits would be number one. Paper Bag was not a hit single for Fiona, but most people name it as their favorite song of hers. I have never talked to anyone who did not like this song, so I guess it makes sense that it is number one.

    3. Ani DiFranco
My top track: TocarOut of Habit This is my favorite Ani song. I listen to it all the time and never get sick of it. Both the lyrics and the melody are incredibly well-written.
Ranking: 28. That's a bit shocking. This is definately one of Ani's best songs. Even people who are not big Ani fans love this one. Its position is a bit dissapointing to me.

    4. PJ Harvey
My top track: TocarDown by the Water My favorite PJ track of all time! It is also from my favorite PJ album. No surprise that this is my top track of hers.
Ranking: 4. That is a pretty high ranking, but I thought it would be 1 or 2. It is one of her best known tracks and one of the most highly regarded. At least it is in the top 10.

    5. Aimee Mann
My top track: TocarGuys Like Me This is not my favorite Aimee track, but it is my favorite track off of Lost in Space; it is the one that made me fall in love with that album. It is one of my favorite tracks of hers, but not my all-time favorite.
Ranking: 21. That seems right. It is not one that is regarded as one her best tracks nor it is one that a lot of people are familiar with, so the ranking seems suitable.

    6. Regina Spektor
My top track: TocarChemo Limo This used to be one of the tracks I liked the least from Soviet Kitsch. But after giving it a chance and really listening to it, it has now become one of my favorite songs and, quite possibly, my favorite Regina song of all time. It is so heartbreakingly beautiful. I don't know how anyone could not like it.
Ranking: 16. Wow. I thought this song would at least be in the top 10. Most Regina fans I've talked to list this as their favorite song of hers. But I guess it makes sense since most of the top tracks were from begin to hope, her most popular album, so I guess the ranking makes sense.

    7. Garbage
My top track: TocarI Think I'm Paranoid This is the song that got me into Garbage and made me fall in love with Version 2.0. Though it is not my all-time favorite Garbage song, it is definately one I hold in high regard.
Ranking: 5. This seems appropriate. I figured it would be in the top 10 because it is one of their biggest hits and one of their best songs.

    8. Elliott Smith
My top track: Single File This is my favorite Elliott song and it is from my favorite Elliott album.
Ranking: 54. That is not surprising at all. That seems to be an appropriate ranking since it is not a track a lot of people seem to know about. Even hardcore Elliott fans I know hardly ever talk about this one, so this ranking seems right.

    9. Kate Bush
My top track: TocarRunning Up That Hill (A Deal With God) This is the song that made me fall in love with Kate. It is my favorite song of hers from my favorite Kate album.
Ranking: 8. The song is actually ranked at number 2, which is appropriate because it is one of her best loved and most well known songs. Running up that Hill (A Deal with God) is how the song appears on the Hounds of Love album, so that is why it is ranked lower than the one that is simply titled Running up that Hill.

    10. Liz Phair
My top track: TocarGirls! Girls! Girls! I love this song. Though it is not my favorite Liz track, it is from one of my favorite albums of all time: the magnificant Exile in Guyville.
Ranking: 20. That seems reasonable, considering most of her top 10 tracks are from those awful new albums. Since it is not one of the most well know Exile tracks, the ranking seems right.

    11. Cat Power
My top track: Cross Bones Style This is my favorite Cat Power song. It is so hauntingly beautiful. I fell in love with her music because of this song.
Ranking: 20. WHAT?? That does not seem right. I would have put this song in the top 10. Well... since most of the top tracks are from the new album, I guess it makes sense that this would be lower, but I didn't think it would be this low.

    12. Mirah
My top track: TocarGone Sugaring I love this song! One of my favorite Mirah tracks. I can't get enough of it!!!
Ranking: 30. That makes sense. It is not one of her most popular songs, but I love it.

    13. Bjork
    My top track: Possibly Maybe
This is one of my favorite Bjork songs ever! It is one of my lullabys. It's mellow beauty always helps me get to sleep.
Ranking: 10. It makes sense for this song to be in the top 10. I am content with this ranking.

    14. Sonic Youth
My top track: TocarSweet Shine I love this song. It is one of the most beautiful indie-lo-fi songs ever in my opinion. Even though the album it comes from is one of Sonic Youth's worst, this is probably one of my all-time favorite songs of theirs.
Ranking: haha this song is not even listed in their top 100 tracks. Considering that no one ever talks about this song and it is from Sonic Youth's dreaded Experimental Jet Set, Trash, and No Star, the lack of top ranking makes sense. It makes even more sense when you consider that Sonic Youth has a shitload of albums and 99% of them are better than the album this song comes from.

    15. Peaches
My top track: Do Ya Though this may not be one her best song and it is very tame compared to most other peaches songs, I love it to death. I can't stop listening to it. It always makes me want to dance!
Ranking: 15. I thought this song would be higher since it was used in a recent commericial, but I guess the rankning makes sense, since it is Peaches' incredibly dirty songs that draw people to her.

    16. Patti Smith
My top track: TocarBecause the Night I love this song very much, but it is not my favorite song of hers. I listened to it a lot before because I had yet to hear her other songs. The songs on Horses far surpass this one. It is also her most overplayed track, but regardless, I still like it a lot.
Ranking: 2. I thought it would be number 1 because it is her most well known song, but it is second to Gloria. I think this ranking is appropriate because Gloria is her best song in my opinion.

    17. Miles Davis
My top track: TocarBlue in Green This is my favorite Miles Davis song. It is from one of my favorite albums of all time: the masterpiece Kind of Blue. It is also my favorite jazz composition. This song made me fall in love with jazz!
Ranking: 2. That makes sense considering that all of the Kind of Blue tracks are at the top of the list. The song is second to So What. While I love So What, I think Blue and Green should be no. 1!!!

    18. Poe
My top track: Another World Though I do not consider this to be an essential Poe track, I love it to death. Though lyrically and musically it is pale in comparision to the tracks on Haunted, it has a beat that is incredibly irresistable. I can't help but play this track over and over.
Ranking: 25. That makes sense. The Haunted tracks are much more popular and better overall than the Hello tracks. This is also a track that is mostly disregarded by fans and non-fans alike, so the ranking seems right.

    19. Sarah McLachlan
My top track: TocarBuilding a Mystery This is one of my favorite Sarah songs of all time. I love everything about it. The lyrics and the melody are flawless. One of the most beautiful songs ever written in my opinion.
Ranking: 4. An appropriate ranking. I figured it would be in the top 10 since it was one of her biggest hits. Most of the Surfacing songs were towards the top, since that is her most successful album.

    20. The Softies
    My top track: TocarPedestal
My favorite song from an incredibly underrated band. It is so beautiful and mellow. I listen to it when I am ready to go to sleep.
Ranking: 51. I guess that makes sense. It is from the self titled album and all of the tracks from it rank incredibly low, since it is not as popular as Holiday in Rhode Island and It's Love. It is also the least popular track on the album, so the ranking seems right.

I am not sure how weird I am. Some of my top tracks rank in the top 10, some even at number one and others are way at the bottom of the charts, one was not even on the charts at all. I guess I rank somewhere in between normal and weird when it comes to music :)
  • I have nothing else better to do, so I guess I'll do this lame survey.

    Dez 31 2006, 5h35

I know I have done a similar survey for my top 25, but I did that one a few months ago. So I decided I would do a fresh one for my top 10, which has changed somewhat since I did the other survey.

Name your top 10 most played bands on Last.fm:

    1. Tori Amos
    2. Fiona Apple
    3. Ani DiFranco
    4. PJ Harvey

    When the Pawn

What is your favourite lyric that 5 has sung?
    I'm a superball
You can bounce me once and I ricochet
    Around the room
    I'm a superball
If I pick up speed get out of my way
    I'm a sonic boom
    And I warn you now
    The velocity I'm gathering
    Will knock you down
    TocarSuperball

How many times have you seen 4 live?
Never, though I would kill to see the immensely wonderful Ms. Harvey live.

What is your favourite song by 7?
    TocarOnly Happy When It Rains

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
No, there isn't an Ani song that makes me sad.

What is your favourite lyric that 2 has sung?
I love all of Fiona's lyrics, so it is incredibly hard to choose a favorite. While I don't think these are her best written lyrics, those are found mostly in the gorgeous gems from Tidal, the lyrics to "The Way Things Are" pretty much define my life.

So keep on calling me names, keep on, keep on
And I'll keep kicking the crap till it's gone
If you keep on killing, you could get me to settle
And as soon as I settle, I bet I'll be
    Able to move on
    TocarThe Way Things Are

What is your favourite song by 9?
    TocarRunning Up That Hill

How did you get in to 3?
I heard her music being played on a local indie radio station, and I was incredibly captivated.

What was the first song you heard by 1?
    TocarSpark

What is your favourite song by 4?
    TocarDown by the Water

How many times have you seen 9 live?
    Never.

What is a good memory you have concerning 2?
When I would come home after having an unbearably shitty day in high school, I would put on my Fiona records. They were like soothing balms to a weary and heavily damaged soul.

Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
    Twilight
None of Elliott's songs really make me sad, but I picked this one because it is so achingly beautiful it brings tears to my eyes and it was one of his final songs before his death, so that fact infuses it with an undeniably sombre sentiment.

What is your favourite album of 5?
    Bachelor No. 2

What is your favourite lyric that 3 has sung?
Pretty much all of Ani's lyrics are mini literary oeuvres, but I have always loved the lyrics to 32 Flavors, my favorite Ani song, the most.

Squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cause someday you might find you're starving
and eating all of the words you said
    Tocar32 Flavors

What is your favourite song of 1?
I love nearly every Tori song, so my favorite song of hers changes pretty much daily but a the moment it is hauntingly gorgeous TocarSuede

What is your favourite song of 10?
Tough one! I love nearly every song on Exile in Guyville, but the song that I loved first, and I still love the most off of the album today is TocarDivorce Song

How many times have you seen 8 live?
I have never seen Elliott live, and unfortunatley I never will :(

What is a great memory you have considering 9?
    I don't really have one.

  • I'm fucking sick of this shit.

    Dez 1 2006, 17h20

I am so sick of these rude assholes who feel the need to go on an artist's page and write horrible things about them. Haven't any of you pricks heard the saying "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"? What the fuck do your hateful comments accomplish? All they do is make you come off as an asshole. I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I know that everyone is not going to like the same artists, but you don't have to vent your opinions in such a disrespectful manner. Keep your scorn-laden feelings to your goddamn self! There are some artists that really piss me off, like overly dramatic and annoying emo bands like My Chemical Romance and scantly-clad untalented pop temptresses like Britney Spears, but I am not going to go on their page and verbally assault them. I appreciate every one's unique music tastes. We don't have to like all music, but we should learn to at least appreciate different types of music and respect other people's music tastes.
