reading this list makes me cry with vicarious joy! lucky you! i clicked through via Snapper, who i was lucky enough to see during the Flying Nun 15th anniversary gigs, at the Provincial in the 90s. they were terrific. they played again recently, too, and hopefully will do so more often.

totally tangential question, but have you read matthew bannister's book? i heard some mention that he had some issues and it was a bit biased. you seem like you had some experience with that whole scene (and boy am i jealous!) so could i perhaps ask you to comment on it?

That list is a who's who of early NZ obscurities... I was probably at some of the same gigs. For jnikopol's benefit the Mathew Bannister book is a great read. Biased? Sure, but Mathew calls it like he saw it. Of course he's gonna be just a little biased (as in, the Sneaky's were great, why didn't everyone else like us?) If he wasn't it wouldn't have been half as much fun to read. It is the best book ever written on the early days of Flying Nun Records/ Dunedin music in the 80's. And don't let the fact that it is the only book on those subjects put you off tracking down a copy. Very well written, very funny and mostly true.
