One of the reasons why I subscribed eMusic. This album appeared in many Top20s of 2005. But not for me. Listened to it for 5 weeks, and besides "I turn my camera on" there aren't any more tracks that hook me on this record.
4/10The Dismemberment PlanEmergency & I
Honest lyrics, a very nice sound somewhere between lo-fi self-recordings, raw punk and keyboard sounds. Sometimes it reminds me of At the Drive-In
In/Casino/Out or even El Gran Orgo. I fell in love with them, too bad there's no more chance to enjoy a live gig.
Was a bit disappointed at first listen as it isn't far as
experimental as Emergency & I was. It's growing on me slowly, with some decent tracks like Superpowers or The Other Side. I don't think it'll catch up with E&I, though, so I'll have a look at their pre-E&I records.
6/10The New PornographersTwin Cinema
Another Top20 candidate in 2005 for many of you critics. And this time for me, too. I first ignored it for some weeks after downloading just to rediscover its fantastic melodies some weeks ago. Sounds like an entertaining live band, I hope they're planning some gigs in Germany.
8/10In Case We Die
Big hype here in Germany in the first weeks of this new year. Well, they are really different but not as disturbing as some critics judge. I must admit that I don't listen to this record in a whole, but some tracks have the potential of becoming 2006's Most Played Songs: Wishbone, Do The Whirlwind, Neverevereverdid, It's 5!. Good first half but especially the last 4 tracks don't work for me. Although I must admit, I like the idea of AiH played at public places: http://www.last.fm/user/michalboo/journal/2006/01/26/65562/
6/10Minus the BearMenos El Oso
Definitely *the* discovery of February. A great post-punk/emo-pop album, especially great on shuffle with The Plan's Change and some Bloc Party for day dreaming.
8/10Thunderbirds Are Now!Justamustache
Some great tracks like Enough About Me, Let's Talk About Me
and This World Is Made of Paper
and some mediocre stuff. Dance. Punk. Fun.
6/10SupersystemAlways Never Again
The opposite of easy-listening. Innovative and very groovy. But I only really like every other songs on this record (1, 2, 4, 6, 8) and don't listen to it too much after the first few weeks.
Tracks of the month:The City
One perfect broken heart song. Makes me wonder why the "broken heart" tag is so empty here at last.fm.The Bleeding Heart Show
Great pop song.So Says I
Another beautiful pop song. Thanks to Christian E. who introduced this great band to me.Such Great Heights
It's actually not about the song, but it reminds me of that night at the club... (if the girl only knew...)Pachuca Sunrise
Great track from a great album.
