Ez3kiel + Narrow Terence @ la Cigale, 05. 11. 2008


Ce qu'il faut avant tout savoir du groupe EZ3kiel (Jarring Effects), c'est qu'il n'est pas de ceux qui nous livrent une musique conditionnée par les habitudes d'écoute de la majorité ou par une volonté de classification musicale au combien (trop) générique. Au contraire.
Le 5 Novembre 2008, nous nous sommes trouvés en terres expérimentales, intrigués et attentifs aux sonorités savamment hybrides de leur dernier opus en date, battlefield. C'est la seconde fois que les tourangeaux d'Ez3kiel nous présentent ce "Battlefield Tour" à la Cigale (belle salle de théâtre et de spectacles située au 120 boulevard de Rochechouart, dans le quartier populaire entre Pigalle et Montmartre du 18ème arrondissement de Paris), on s'attend donc à en prendre plein la vue, car on y était déjà le 18 mars dernier oui oui, et que de nouveaux graphismes sont visiblement disponibles au merchandising.

On entre dans la salle pour apprécier le set des excellents Narrow Terence qui ont participé à la création et aux chœurs de quelques titres sur Battlefield. Pour la petite histoire, ces jeunes gens ont rencontrés les Ez3kiel par le biais des DAAU, et plus particulièrement par le biais de Buni Lenski qui a longuement joué avec les "étroits", les amis des amis deviennent donc amis et Battlefield profite de cette heureuse rencontre musicale.
Nous aurons la joie de voir que sur scène, ils aiment aussi jouer ensemble, les Ez3kiel feront donc apparition pour les titres Little Bird et Odd Jerry Ouverture du set des NaRROW TeRENCE...
... et vice versa lors du set des EZ3kiel, les NaRROW TeRENCE apporteront violon, voix et guitare sur Volfoni, the Wedding et comme sur l'album, bien entendu, Spit on the Ashes.
Yann Nguema toujours à la basse cinq cordes -- qu'il fera d'ailleurs pleurer magiquement à l'aide d'un archet --, Joan Guillon devant le clavier et les machines ou à la guitare, et Matthieu Fays, l'air serein, comme à l'accoutumée à la batterie, sont prêts pour une soirée forte en émotions. Stéphane Babiaud, le dernier arrivant du désormais ancien trio, multi-instrumentiste de génie, jonglera entre un imposant métallophone, un clavier et une seconde batterie chargée de toms électroniques et de boites à rythmes pour des duos synchronisés avec Matthieu Fays.
On rajoute à la présence scénique des 4 musiciens, une balle transparente intégrant des capteurs sensoriels tirée de l'univers de Naphtaline et diverses projections de clips et décors graphiques "home-made" du bassiste-graphiste Yann Nguema, et nous voici transportés dans une toute autre dimension : le désordre du chaos n'y est qu'un nouvel ordre des choses, un monde brûlant et torturé où la grâce et la beauté sont sublimées, renaissant des cendres du passé, dans un calme doux à l'odeur de naphtaline.
Tout comme l'est ce que j'entrevois du public dans la pénombre de la Cigale, la musique d'EZ3kiel est hétéroclite, chacun des membres ayant apporté à l'ensemble un panel d'influences aussi différentes qu'éclectiques, allant du dub planant au post-hardcore de Converge ou Cult of Luna. Les addictions de chacun se marient sans jamais friser la dissonance et ne font jamais songer à une cacophonie débridée. Non, non, ces tisseurs d'étoffes sonores, sous la tutelle du label de qualité qu'est Jarring Effects, savent nous amener là où ils le désirent. Un monde post-apocalyptique, où les éléments industriels futuristes côtoient des objets de l'Ancien Temps pour y puiser de l'âme, là où une machinerie de type "boite à musique" remplace les humains qui, eux, hantent désormais les théâtres pour y voir des ballerines faire leurs arabesques. Le passé imprègne le futur au point qu'il n'y ai plus de temporalité définie du présent dans ce monde parallèle empreint d'une intemporelle poésie mélancolique, aux lueurs sombres et à la bande originale torturée.
Face à nous, se déroule un véritable spectacle, l'idée de spectaculaire transpire d'ailleurs de chacun des moments du concert: la mise en scène visuelle permet d'entrer dans un univers d'une fureur apocalyptique et de douces berceuses. On passe de tableau en tableau.
Tout comme on lit la structure narrative dans les films muets de Chaplin, on lit les titres des chansons typographiées en blanc programmées à l'écran : Via, Strange Day, Volfony, The Wedding, Spit on the ashes, Jah's Hardcore... La set list est pour cela programmée et ne change pas durant une tournée. Le travail de lumière des techniciens est donc préparé et ils se font clairement plaisir entre jeu d'ombres et de lumières: on ne distingue bien souvent que la silhouette des musiciens se détachant de l'écran où se projettent les graphismes du bassiste, et on se trouve soudain totalement éblouis par les éclats blanc du stroboscope lors de Firedamp, les musiciens sont tellement éclairés que l'on en distingue finalement que la silhouette, en inversé. Joli paradoxe.
L'image se cale parfaitement à la prise de parole instrumentale de chacun. Les clips sont crées avec et par la musique. Un mécanisme d'araignée métallique par exemple montre visuellement le rythme des deux batteries sur Break or Die, un battle musical, une véritable joute rythmique, similaire à une danse de capoeira.
La richesse monstre des chansons interprétées mêlent et entremêlent les samples ambiants à des triturations électroniques frôlant à la fois l'indus d'un Nine Inch Nails et la drum'n'bass d'un Aphrodite. Les riffs de guitare énervés relèvent quant à eux de la vague noise, on dérive même vers une tendance grindcore avec la fulgurante minute et demi qu'est Firedamp.
On plonge donc avec Ez3kiel dans un bain bouillant où tous les genres fusionnent, la musique industrielle s'agrémente d'instruments classiques (piano, violon), voire d'instruments rares car radicalement en marge des instrumentations amplifiées au goût du jour (métallophone et carillons).

Parce qu'on y retrouve toujours un penchant musical chérit, on écoutera ez3kiel que l'on soit fan de dub, épris de métal ou addict d'électro. C'est bien entendu encore meilleur quand on aime tous ces genres là. Un concert d'Ez3kiel, c'est ce moment de poésie graphique et sonore qui sait nous émerveiller et nous séduire à chaque fois comme si il s'agissait de la première fois.
