  • 2012 Reveiw

    Dez 22 2012, 15h59

It's nearly Christmastime, and that can only mean one thing - time for a review of 2012! Here is a look back at the albums, artists and songs I enjoyed over the past 12 months. Once again thanks to http://twothreefall.co.uk/ for having a great website to analyse lastFM data!

Artist of the year: Kelly Clarkson
    Plays in 2012: 971
    (813 plays in 2011 - increase of 15%)
Most played album of 2012: Stronger - 671
Most played track of 2012: What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger) 62

Unquestionably my artist of 2012 is Ms Clarkson (soon to be Mrs Blackstock - congrats Kelly!). I had more over 200 more scrobbles for Kelly than anyone else, even though her last album, Stronger, came out in 2011. This was also my most played of the year, with double the plays of the #2 album. The title track Stronger is my most played track of the year too. All in all, I loved Kelly just as much in 2012 as I ever have, in particular after seeing her on tour again in November where she was as incredible as ever. I'm expecting a quiet 2013 from Kelly, with a wedding (and maybe even babies ?) on the way, but after a great year professionally and personally, she has definitely earned it.

Album of the Year: Pink - The Truth About Love 404 plays
Runner-up: Garbage - Not Your Kind of People - 358 plays

The album that I was most looking forward to this year was without question Not Your Kind of People by Garbage, as it was such a long gap since the their previous album and no-one even knew if they would ever record again. I wasn't disappointed. Their firth set is classic Garbage, with tracks like Control and Beloved Freak that would feel right at home alongside their 90's output. I also had the immense pleasure of finally getting to see them live in July, where they just tore up the stage. However, this isn't my album of the year - there are just few too many tracks that are only average, and overall is just missing one or two giant songs to get me really hooked.

Which leads me to me most played album of the year - The Truth About Love. I didn't really know what to expect from Pink's (or P!nk 6th album, after a album I found disappointing (Funhouse). Frankly I was looking forward more to the tour than the album when each was announced. Maybe it's because I didn't set particularly high standards then, that I love this album so much. Aside from a couple of stinking boring ballads (that I've already removed from my Pink playlist), the album is everything you'd want from a singer as ballsy and earnest as Pink. Personal highlights are Just Give Me A Reason, How Come You're Not Here and Walk Of Shame (which HAS to have a music video soon!!). Overall an incredibly catchy album, which should hopefully deliver a fantastic tour in 2013

Track of the Year: Somebody That I Used to Know 62 plays
    Runner-up: Pound the Alarm - 51 plays

Just like everybody else, I was absolutely hooked on that Gotye song. Something about the song is absolutely captivating. From the first listen I was addicted, and the plink-plonky background just endlessly loops round in my head!
My party track of the year is Pound The Alarm - guaranteed to get me on the dancefloor or ready for a night out! When I saw Nicki in November this was my highlight of the show, and the crowd went mental for this song.

And now for a complete rundown of 2012!

    TOP ARTISTS

    1 Kelly Clarkson - 971 plays
    (813 plays in 2011 - increase of 19%)

    2 Garbage - 769 plays
    (376 plays in 2011 - increase of 105%)
Most scrobbled track: Blood for Poppies - 26 plays

    3 Mariah Carey - 693 plays
    (874 plays in 2011 - drop of 21%)
Most scrobbled track: All I Want for Christmas Is You - 20 plays

    4 Whitney Houston - 680 plays
    (92 plays in 2011 - increase of 639%)
Most scrobbled track: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) - 30 plays

On February 11th this year we long one of the greatest singers of all time. Not much I can say here, but Whitney's death greatly affected me and spent a good deal of time listening to just Whitney and little else.

    5 Brandy - 613 plays
    (739 plays in 2011 - drop of 17%)
Most scrobbled track: It All Belongs To Me - 43 plays

2012 brought a new Brandy album, Two Eleven. Brandy's style of RnB is sounding better than ever, particularity as so few artists are prepared to actually record proper RnB music, with the genre now so diluted with pop artists. Thanks heavens for Brandy then - Two Eleven is like a classic RnB album from the late 90's full of lush harmonies and breathtaking vocals. I would probably rank it slightly below her previous 4 albums, but otherwise this is another win for Brandy.

    6 Pink - 594 plays
    (201 plays in 2011 - increase of 196%)
Most scrobbled track: Blow Me (One Last Kiss) - 38 plays

    7 Lady Gaga - 406 plays
    (854 plays in 2011 - drop of 53%)
Most scrobbled track: Hair - 31 plays

    8 Madonna - 393 plays
    (262 plays in 2011 - increase of 50%)
Most scrobbled track: Gang Bang - 31 plays

MDNA was Madonna's follow up to 2008's Hard Candy - which I still think is a fantastic album. MDNA had a truly terrible lead in single, Madonna's worst ever in my opinion. Fortunately, the album had a handful of absolute bangers - there is definitively still a place in the today's industry for the queen of pop

    9 Michael Jackson - 391 plays
    (675 plays in 2011 - drop of 42%)
Most scrobbled track: History (Tony Moran's HIStory Lesson) - 13 plays

    10 Nicki Minaj - 390 plays
    (315 plays in 2011 - increase of 24%)
Most scrobbled track: Pound the Alarm - 51 plays

    11 Haley Reinhart - 309 plays
    (220 plays in 2011 - increase of 40%)
Most scrobbled track: Free - 50 plays

Haley brought her album - Listen Up! - out earlier this year, and it was just as good as I was hoping for. Bluesy, retro with her trademark growl - flawless vocals and great melodies. Unfortunately it seems like Haley has been dropped now so who knows if us Haliens will get a follow up to this very promising first album?

    12 Janet Jackson - 295 plays
    (733 plays in 2011 - drop of 60%)

    13 Marilyn Manson - 285 plays
    (189 plays in 2011 - increase of 51%)
Most scrobbled track: Pistol Whipped - 10 plays

I don't know if my tastes are changing or Manson just aren't trying any more, but I just couldn't get into Born Villain. I think it's the latter as most people didn't even realise they had a new album out at all.

    14 The Jezabels - 264 plays
Most scrobbled track: City Girl - 35 plays

Mty favourite new band, I first saw The Jezabels supporting Garbage on their tour, where they played an electrifying set. I immediately bought their album and have been playing it ever since. It's a bit 80's, but all the better for it. Hopefully they'll continue to record and I will go to see them on their own headline tour soon. Thank you Shirley Manson for introducing me to this band!!

15 Ben Barnes & Robert Sheehan with Joe Echo - 255 plays
Most scrobbled track: Where We Want to Be - 36 plays

    16 Phillip Phillips - 252 plays
Most scrobbled track: Home (American Idol Performance) - 39 plays

Phillip won season 11 of American Idol in May, and most of my scrobbles are from the songs he did during that season. I absolutely love Phillip's voice, and in my opinion is the best winner of Idol since Kelly Clarkson. I genuinely believe he will have a huge career over the next decade and more. I've only just got his album, so in 2013 I expect to be playing a lot more from Phillip and hopefully he will be able to cross over into the UK market, where he would be very successful I'm certain

    17 Carter Burwell - 241 plays
    (93 plays in 2011 - increase of 158%)
Most scrobbled track: Love Death Birth - 14 plays

    18 Björk - 239 plays
    (583 plays in 2011 - drop of 59%)

    19 Britney Spears - 218 plays
    1040 plays in 2011 - drop of 79%
Most scrobbled track: Till the World Ends - 13 plays

    20 Glee Cast - 211 plays
    618 plays in 2011 - drop of 66%
Most scrobbled track: Rumour Has It / Someone Like You - 34 plays

  • My artists of 2011

    Dez 30 2011, 18h45

So here are the men, women and bands I have been listening to in the last 12 months, and my general thoughts on each of them.
I'm going to do a separate post about my favourite individual songs and albums of the year, so this doesn't get too cluttered.

Many thanks to http://twothreefall.co.uk/lastfmexplorer/ who allowed me to obsess over my data!

    First of all, the headlines:
Most played new artist: Eric Saade
Biggest increase (year on year): Kylie Minogue
Biggest drop in scrobbles: Whitney Houston -85%
    Biggest Disappointment: Beyoncé (174 scrobbles)

    Most Scrobbled Artists Of 2011

    1.Britney Spears – 1040 plays

    310 plays in 2010 - Increase of 235%
Most played track: Till the World Ends (89 plays) - first scrobbled on 7 Mar 2011.
(Includes both the original version, and the Femme Fatal Remix combined)

2011 was definitely a great year for Britney. Femme Fatale was a great album, much more consistent than 2008's rushed Circus. The only thing it lacked was one massive single like Womanizer, Toxic or Slave 4 U. World Ends was Britney close to her best, and the highlight of the live show I went to in November. I will always stan for Britney!

    2.Kylie Minogue – 887 plays

    33 plays in 2010 - Increase of 2588%
Most played track: Get Outta My Way (113 plays) - first scrobbled on 28 Jan 2011.

Even though Kylie's last album Aphrodite came out in 2010, I didn't buy it until January this year. I absolutely loved the album and played the hell out of my Ultimate Kylie after I saw her live in the summer! Get Outta My Way is a fantastic pop song, and it's scandalous that it wasn't massive for her.

    3.Mariah Carey – 874 Plays

    1872 plays in 2010 – decrease of 53%
Most played track:All I Want for Christmas Is You (26 Plays)
(Includes both the original version and the Extra festive 2010 version combined)

A quiet year for Mimi (musically), after new albums in '08, '09 and '10. I still play her daily though, and I'm hoping for a strong return in 2012 and maybe even a tour (PLEASE!)

    4.Lady Gaga – 854 plays

    1042 plays in 2010 - decrease of 17%
Most played track: Born This Way(63 plays) - first scrobbled on 12 Feb 2011.

It took me a while to warm to Born This Way, but eventually I saw it as the true pop gem that it is. I can't say I like everything GaGa does away from music, but she is very sincere in what she does & long as she's making albums this good, I will always be a fan

    5.Kelly Clarkson – 813 plays

    499 plays in 2010 – increase of 63%
Most played track: Mr. Know It All (34 Plays) - first scrobbled on 30 Aug 2011.
Kelly can do no wrong in my eyes - her voice is flawless, her melodies are insanely catchy and her personality in immensely likeable. Stronger was my most eagerly awaited albums of the year, and it was even better than I was hoping! I have no doubt that I will be playing it into 2012 and she might even be my #1 artist next year.

    6.Brandy– 739 Plays

    1003 plays in 2010 – Decrease of 26%
Most played tracks: Afrodisiac& I Tried (19 plays each)
There's no one around who makes RnB as true and as classy as Brandy does. Even though it's been over 3 years since her last album, her songs never age. If anything, her music just gets better and better with time. I have no doubt that her next album will be a as great as all her previous ones.

    7.Janet Jackson – 733 Plays

    619 plays in 2010 – increase of 18%
Most played tracks: Nasty& The Pleasure Principle (21 plays each)
My highlight of 2011, if not of my life, was seeing Janet in London this summer on 3 seperate nights. A true dream come true, especially as I got to meet her too! Miss Jackson is a legend and hopefully next year she will return to the top of the charts

    8.Rihanna– 726 Plays

    154 plays in 2010 – Increase of 371%
Most played track: Only Girl (In the World) (61 Plays)
2011 was a great year for Rihanna, you just couldn't deny her releasing great song after great song. I'm not that keen on Talk That Talk, but it may yet grow on me the way Rated R did.

    9.Glee Cast – 618 plays

    1224 plays in 2010 – Decrease of 50%
Most played track: River Deep, Mountain High (28 Plays) – First scrobbled on 22 Feb 2011.
The reason for my sharp decline in Glee plays is mostly that I have moved all my Glee CD's into my new car, so I don't play this as much at home. Also, season 2 ended up quite disappointing. Season 3 is better, but they haven't done anything really interesting musically for a while. Still a huge Gleek though!

    10.Björk– 583 Plays

    249 plays in 2010 – Increase of 134%
Most played track: Crystalline(25 Plays) – First scrobbled on 29 Jun 2011
I'm a bit embarrassed that Björk is this low in my charts, considering that she brought out a great new album this year. I haven't played it as much as I should have done, but it quite difficult to get into. Her live show in Manchester was one of my highlights of 2011 though, so hopefully next year I'll give Biophillia a proper chance

    11.Michael Jackson – 529 Plays

    675 plays in 2010 – decrease of 22%
Most played track: Hollywood Tonight (30 plays) – First scrobbled on 25 Mar 2011
I bought Michaelthis year with some trepidation, and it was surprisingly OK-ish. Most of these plays still come from 90's era Michael though

    12.Katy Perry – 465 plays

    292 plays in 2010 – Increase of 59%
Most played track: Firework (59 plays)
A truly incredible year for Katy, even more so considering that Teenage Dream came out in 2010 and I had considerable scrobbles for it back then. I'm not sure if she'll be bringing out another album next year or not, but whenever she releases it I will be ready on the first day!

    13.Maroon 5 – 431 plays

    247 plays in 2010 – increase of 74%
Most played track:Moves Like Jagger (feat. Christina Aguilera) (46 plays) – first scrobbled on 29 Jun 2011
I saw Maroon 5 in February, and they were amazing. After the show I really got into their last album, which is why they have a big increase here. Then of course came the massive single, which dominated the second half of the year

14.The Rocky Horror Picture Show – 401 Plays

    56 plays in 2010 – increase of 716%
Most played track: Sweet Transvestite (43 plays)
There are a two main reasons why I listened to Rocky Horror so much this year - #1 is that I bought the blu-ray and fell in love with the film all over again. #2 is that Glee covered the songs in one episode and reminded me how great this soundtrack is.

    15.Garbage– 376 plays
    798 plays in 2010 – Decrease of 53%
Most played track: Only Happy When It Rains (15 plays)
Shirley and the boys are currently recording a new album, so new material and a tour will definitely make sure they return to the top of my charts soon!

    16.Eric Saade – 359 plays

    No plays in 2010
Most played tracks: Manboy & Masquerade (33 plays each) – First scrobbled on 23 May 2011.
I hadn't even heard of Eric until Eurovison in May, when he came 3rd with Popular - he truly was robbed! BY miles the best song and performance of the night, I quickly got his album and loved it. If there's any justice, He will break out next year and become the huge star that his talent deserves.

    17.Jill Scott – 315 plays
    347 plays in 2010 – Decrease of 9%
Most played track: So In Love (Feat. Anthony Hamilton) (18 plays) – First scrobbled on 26 Jun 2011.
Like Björk, Jill released an album this year that I enjoyed, but didn't love. Light of the Sun wasn't as great as her previous albums, but I still like every track nonetheless.

    18.Nicki Minaj – 315 plays
    19 plays in 2010 – Increase of 1658%
Most played track: Moment 4 Life (feat. Drake) (53 plays) – First scrobbled on 30 Apr 2011.
I grew to love Nicki more and more as the year went on, and hopefully next year she will become even greater

    19.Madonna – 262 plays
    864 plays in 2010 – Decrease of 70%
Most played track: Heartbeat (16 plays)
New album next year = a lot more plays in 2012!

    20.Lily Allen – 254 plays
    32 plays in 2010 – increase of 694%
Most played track: Not Fair (29 plays)
I finally got around to buying Lily's 2nd album this year, and I think it's even better than her debut! Such a shame she isn't making music any more :(

    21.Timbaland– 251 plays
    55 plays in 2010 – Increase of 456%
Most played track: Meet In Tha Middle (feat. Bran' Nu) (29 plays) – first scrobbled on 10 Mar 2011)
I bought Tim's second solo album year, and at least half of it is great, the other half forgettable. His work with Brandy is incredible though! Her voice over his beats is a combination that cannot be beaten
  • Review Of 2010

    Dez 31 2010, 2h21

Since I didn't do one for 2009, I thought I should post my most scrobbled things of 2010 - albums, artists & songs. (I did actually prepare a 2009 post, but never posted it, so I'll include that data at the bottom - for the record so to speak ;)

    Most Scrobbled Artists Of 2010

    1 Mariah Carey +227% over 2009
    (1,872 plays in 2010
    , 824 in 2009. Increase of 1084)
Most scrobbled track -Up Out My Face (126 plays)*

Unsurprisingly, Mariah is my #1 artist of the year. I've been listening to Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel since late 2009, and together with a new Christmas album, she has been at the top of my scrobbles for the past 18 months.

(*Includes 82 plays for album version, plus 44 plays for the Nicki Minaj Remix)

    2 Glee Cast
    (1,224 plays in 2010
    , none in 2009)
Most scrobbled track - Bust Your Windows (53)

If Mariah was not a surprise at #1, then this is a big one for me at #2. I didn't even realise I listened to the Glee songs that much! If season 2 is as good as season 1, then Glee will probably stay at the top of my charts for a while, though I doubt I will be listening to this much once it's off air, I don't see Glee having much longevity

    3 Lady Gaga +199% over 2009
    (1,042 plays in 2010
    , 524 in 2009. Increase of 518)
Most scrobbled track - Telephone (feat. Beyoncé) (111)

I listened to Gaga non-stop for the first part of the year, peaking when I saw her live in February. Though I scrobbled her less after summer, I definitely see her challenging for the #1 position in one year's time if her new album is as amazing as she's promising

    4 Brandy -37% over 2009
    (1,003 plays in 2010
    , 1600 in 2009. Decrease of 597)
Most scrobbled track - Drum Life (30)

Brandy scores just over 1000 scrobbles with me, even though she hasn't brought out an album in over 2 years. In fact, the album of hers I've been playing the most is Never Say Never, which is over 12 years old. This speaks to the depth of her back catalogue, and that she has delivered 4 straight albums which are stone cold classics. She also had a great run on Dancing With Stars, which made me love her all the more.

    5 Madonna +655% over 2009
    (864 plays in 2010
    , 132 in 2009. Increase of 732)
Most scrobbled track -Beat Goes On (feat. Kanye West) (64)

My Madonna fandom really kicked in this year. It began when I caught the Sticky & Sweet tour on TV last Christmas, and couldn't move my eyes from the TV. I was stunned at the energy and passion she was able to bring to the stage, especially given her age. From there I went and bought Hard Candy plus the live Blu-ray, and have been playing her since.

    6 Garbage -45% over 2009
    (798 plays in 2010
    , 1446 in 2009. Decrease of 648)
Most scrobbled track -Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!) (42 plays)

I love Garbage even harder than last year. A promised reunion will make me burst with joy if it results in a new album or tour

    7 Michael Jackson -73% over 2009
    (675 plays in 2010
    , 2495 in 2009. Decrease of 1820)
Most scrobbled track - Invincible (21)

After a phenomenal amount of scrobbles in 2009 (2495), Michael was always going to fall somewhat this year, pretty much back to the level I used to listen to him in 2008.

    8 Janet Jackson -34% over 2009
    (619 plays in 2010
    , 830 in 2009. Decrease of 211.)
Most scrobbled track - So Much Betta (24)

A relatively quiet 2010 for Miss Janet, but I still play her back catalogue all the time, particuarly Control <3

    9 Whitney Houston +47 over 2009
    (605 plays in 2010
    , 411 in 2009. Increase of 194)
Most scrobbled track - A Song for You (48)

I saw Whitney live in June, and she was incredible. I played her alot around this time.

    10 Kelly Clarkson -76% over 2009
    (499 plays in 2010
    , 2095 in 2009. Decrease of 1596)
Most scrobbled track - If I Can't Have You (28)

I caught Kelly live twice in February, and she didn't disappoint. Hopefully we'll get a new album and tour in 2011, and I can play her non-stop again

    11 Pink -35% over 2009
    (467 plays in 2010, 773 in 2009. Decrease of 274)
Most scrobbled track - Sober (25)
    12 Amerie -17% over 2009
    (337 plays in 2010, 406 in 2009. Decrease of 69)
Most scrobbled track - Higher (40)
    13 Britney Spears -70% over 2009
    (310 plays in 2010, 1040 in 2009. Decrease of 730)
Most scrobbled track - Mannequin (18)
    14 ABBA +61% over 2009
    (300 plays in 2010, 186 in 2009. Increase of 114)
    Most scrobbled track - S.O.S. (21)
    15 Katy Perry +289% over 2009
    (292 plays in 2010, 75 in 2009. Increase of 217)
Most scrobbled track - Teenage Dream (35)
    16 Carter Burwell +1216% over 2009
    (250 plays in 2010, 19 in 2009. Increase of 231)
    Most scrobbled track - Bella's Lullaby (15)
    17 Björk -53% over 2009
    (249 plays in 2010, 527 in 2009. Decrease of 278)
Most scrobbled track - Bachelorette (12)
    18 Maroon 5 +91% over 2009
    (247 plays in 2010, 129 in 2009. Increase of 118)
Most scrobbled track - Misery (11)
    19 Dionne Warwick +103% over 2009
    (240 plays in 2010, 118 in 2009. Increase of 122)
Most scrobbled track - Don't Make Me Over (14)
    20 Carly Simon +422% over 2009

  • Brandy @ IndigO2 - May 7 2009

    Mai 9 2009, 0h53

    Thu 7 May – BRANDY

Last night Brandy played the IndigO2 in Lodnon, her first gig in the UK for a long time, and it was definitely worth the wait for her fans! B-Rocka came on stage to Aphrodisiac, and showed from the outset that she was in perfect voice. All night she sounded flawless, and ran through all her hits without missing a single note. I've always adored Brandy's husky vocals, and in person they sound just incredible, better than even on record. From Aphrodisiac, it was Who Is She 2 U and then Full Moon. Brandy swaggered around the stage as if it was her second home, and danced confidently. It is hard to explain to a non-fan how magnetic Brandy's songs are, but I was just happy to see her singing them after played her CD's for over 11 years. After the first few songs, Brandy relaxed a little bit and apologised for being away for so long. She even attempted a British accent! The rest of the night is a bit of a blur, but it was clear that Brandy was really enjoying herself on stage. Towards the end of the night, Bran gave a speech to the assembled fans, thanking us for our support through all the years. she got more emotional as was talking, and had to stop when she started to cry, but everyone just cheered louder.
After these words, there really was only one she could sing - Right Here (Departed)! She introduced it by saying how much she loves us all, and dedicated the song to London (and promised she wouldn't be saying this at any other city!)

Unfortunately, Brandy left the stage far too soon, leaving most everyone in the crowd very disappointed with the 45 minute set. There is no doubt that Brandy has a real stage presence, but an hour really is the minimum acceptable set list for a performer of her standing. None-the-less, it is a night I will never forget, and I will definitely be there next time Brandy comes to see us.

    Set list (approx. order)
    Aphrodisiac
    Who is She 2 U
    Full Moon
    Almost Doesn't Count
    What About Us
    Best Friend
Medoly - (Top of the World, I Wanna Be Down, Baby, Boy Is Mine)
    Torn Down
    Long Distance
    Have You Ever
    Right Here

One final thing, about 10 minutes after the show finished, we could see the lady herself backstage behind a curtian, and we all started to call her name. She spontaneously responded by coming back into the venue to speak with the people left in the arena, and took pictures with the people on the front row. I was too far back to speak to her myself, but I got some cool pictures, and it was amazing to be within a metre of one of my idols!

OK, time for my pictures! I tagged them, so feel free to pass them on if you wish.

  • My Favourite Things of 2008 (songs, albums and artists)

    Jan 2 2009, 19h06

My most scrobbled artists of 2008:

    1 Björk 1,944
Most played track: Hunter (74 plays in 2008)

I’m not shocked that Björk is my #1 artist this year - I’ve seen her live twice this year at 2 amazing concerts and I couldn’t stop listening to her all year round. With a lot of albums coming our in the past 2 months, I’ve played her less but 2008 was definitely the year of Björk for me

    2 Marilyn Manson 1,381
Most played track: Are You The Rabbit? (55 plays)

I am pretty surprised Manson is ranked so highly here, given how quite it‘s been this year. I will often listen to all their albums all the way through, hence so many scrobbles. There lies the benefit of having a great back catalogue - plus the fact that I still really like the last album, regardless of what other fans think.

    3 Janet Jackson 1,352
    Most played track: Feedback(134 plays)

2008 was also the year of Discpline. Whilst not a great album, and far from Janet’s best, I always play her new albums to death, as well as the older ones almost weekly.

    4 Maroon 5 1,145
Most played track: Wake Up Call (55 plays)

I got Maroon 5’s last album in mid-2007 and it really took me a while to love it, but once I did, I played it almost daily through the spring and summer. It Won't Be Soon Before Long actually ended up as my most-played album of the year!

    5 ABBA 953
Most played track: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) (76 Plays)

I absolutely love Abba, their songs are timeless and utterly genius. And in my defence, I was listening to them a long time before Mamma Mia came out. Which was a terrible movie, by the way and I will never inflict it on myself again.

    6 CSS 901
Most played track: Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above (71 plays)

I actually thought CSS would be even higher than this because I never grew tired of CSS’s debut album. Every single track is pure magic. Donkey was cool too, and I enjoyed more than most people it seems.

    7 Kelly Clarkson 782
Most played track: Don't Waste Your Time (72 Plays)

After I saw Kelly live in March, I had to get her My December album cos she was brilliant. I was really shocked at the quality of the album, and just played it constantly. There are no massive stand-out brilliant catchy tracks, but every song - without exception - is a nugget of pop brilliance.

    8 Britney Spears 717
Most played track: Womanizer (70 Plays)

Most of these scrobbles are from Britney’s 5th album, Blackout. I know she’s not a “credible” artist but I don’t give a shit about that - Blackout is simply the greatest Dance/Pop album of the decade. It’s just a shame she wasn’t well enough to promote it and instead rushed into the next album. While I do love Circus- alot - , it’s still only about 60% as good as Blackout

    9 Pink 660
Most played track: So What (52 Plays)

Pink (or P!nk if you failed English) brought a new album out in 2008, and it was definitely one of my favourites. It’s not quite as good as I’m Not Dead, but then, what is? I actually ended up liking the rejected songs more than the official track listing - Could’ve Had Everything and Boring are maybe my favourite songs of this era.

    10 Mariah Carey 645
Most played track: O.O.C. (48 Plays)

Normally, a new Mariah album would make her my #1 artist of the year. But I really didn’t like E=MC². It was so painful to listen to her desperately trying to reproduce The Emancipation of Mimi. Instead of striking out and trying to be original and different, Mariah seemed too afraid to even attempt to break from the mould set by TEOM. Having said that, there were still a handful of songs I really liked - unfortunately none of them made it as a single. WTF wasn’t Migratethe lead song??

    11 Brandy 606
Most played track: Right Here (Departed) (33 Plays)

I love Brandy so much. Each one of her albums is completely different (take note Mariah) and yet still sound so fresh and original. I really like Human, and if she had brought it out earlier, I have no doubt that Brandy would be in my top 5 artists of the year.

    12 Michelle Williams 562
Most played track: We Break The Dawn (117 Plays)

To my mind, Michelle Williams is the most under-rated artist in the industry today. Unexpected was my album of the year, no doubt, and completely blows away anything Beyoncedid this year. Unfotuantly for Michelle and her fans, it looks like She probably won’t get rewarded for such a brilliant album and remains ignored by pretty much everyone. At least she still got to release the album, and those of us that have it know how genius it is. Michelle brought serious heat in 2008, and no-one noticed :[
She should be higher than #12 in my charts, but she has a relatively small back catalogue, so almost all her scrobbles come from the one album, in contrast to my top 10.

    13 Alanis Morissette 465
Most played track: Are You Still Mad (30 Plays)

I’m pretty shocked Alanis is so high in this list. I was listening to her a lot in the first part of the year, but I’ve ben slacking off since the summer. I still need to get her last album, I’m such a bad fan.

    14 30 Seconds to Mars 443
Most played track: Buddha for Mary (31 Plays)

Again, like Alanis, most of Mar’s scrobbles come from the first bit of the year. I saw them live over a dozen times this year, which really is the best way to experience Mars. So I was kind of sick of them as the year went on.

    15 Foo Fighters 379
Most played track: The Pretender (39 Plays)

I saw the Foo’s live in the summer and listened to them a lot during that period. Everyone should listen to the Foo’s, they are awesome.
