• 2008 Summary - Albums

    Dez 20 2008, 12h26

    A: Metal

    Albums of the year:

    1. Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels (Greece, Death Metal, Nuclear War Now! Productions)
    Dark, crushing & majestic.

    2. Midnight - Farewell to Hell (United States, Black/Speed Metal, Nuclear War Now! Productions)
Fuck all your trendy retro-thrash bands, Midnight is back!

    3. Revenge - Infiltration.Downfall.Death (Canada/United States, War Metal, Osmose Productions/Nuclear War Now! Productions)
    No word needed.

    4. Arghoslent - Hornets of the Pogrom (United States, Death Metal, Drakkar Productions)
This band has put all the melodic death metal bands to shame, even if they are not a melodic death metal band... Total fuckin' riff machine!

    5. Nachtmystium - Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. 1 (United States, Black/Psychedelic Metal, Century Media Records)
They've finally finished the trasformation from "just another black metal band" to a killer unique act.

    6. Witchfinder General - Resurrected (United Kingdom, Doom Metal/NWOBHM, Buried by Time and Dust Records)
Finally a new album after 25 years... The new album is less NWOBHM sounding and more in a traditional doom (ie Sabbath) vein. The new singer is kinda weak but actually not that bad. Overall this is probably nowhere as good as the old stuff, but still a strong comeback.

    7. Virus - The Black Flux (Norway, Progressive/Avant-Grade Metal, Season of Mist Records)
This album just reeks of bizarreness, weird melodies, bizarre harmonies, psychedelic atmosphere... Not for everyone.

    8. Cobra Khan - Helgorithms (New Zealand, Heavy Rock/Hardcore, 1157 Records)
This is a huge progression considering what their old stuff is like... A mixture of stoner/heavy rock and melodic hardcore/punk with very interesting keyboard parts.

    9. Blasphemophagher - Nuclear Empire of Apocalypse (Italy, War Metal, Nuclear War Now! Productions)

    10. Hail of Bullets - ...Of Frost and War (Holland, Death Metal, Metal Blade Records)

    Newcomers of the year:

    1. Soulseller - S/T Demo (New Zealand, Stoner Metal, Self-Released)
This demo is fuckin' SUPERB, get this or die!

2.Ignivomous - Eroded Void of Salvation EP / The Burning Equinox split EP(Australia, Death Metal, Nuclear War Now! Productions)

    3. ExplosicuM - Conflict (China, Thrash Metal, Areadeath Productions)

    4. Wastelander - Wardrive (United States, Black/Thrash Metal, Planet Metal)

    5. Mitochondrion - Archaeaeon (Canada, Black/Death Metal, Self-Released)
Very chaotic death metal, pretty original and evil, but the album is simply way too long and I just lose focus after half and hour...

    Reissues of the year:

    1. Hellhammer - Demon Entrails (Switzerland, Black Metal, Century Media Records)

    2. Mystifier - Baphometic Goat Worship (Brazil, Black/Death Metal, Nuclear War Now! Productions)

    3. Witchfinder General - Buried Amonst the Ruins (United Kingdom, Doom Metal/NWOBHM, Nuclear War Now! Productions)

    B: Chinese

    Albums of the year:

    1. 麥浚龍 - Words of Silence (Hong Kong, Silly Thing)
Even if he's into all those hip-hop stuff, he's still much better at performing slow ballads, which is what this album is focused on. There is not a single weak moment on this album, definitely his best album ever.

    2. 陳珊妮 - 如果有一件事是重要的 (Taiwan, AsiaMuse Entertainment)
You cant go wrong with her, another masterpiece.

    3. 何韻詩 - Ten Days in the Madhouse (Hong Kong, Eastasia Music)

    4. 陳奕迅 - 不想放手 (Hong Kong, Cinepoly Music/Universal Music)
    Midlife crisis.

    5. 麥浚龍 - Why (Hong Kong, Silly Thing)
Yeah, him again... This one has a few hip-hop songs but there's a still big proportion of slow ballads. Some moments reminds me about golden-aged Nicholas Tse...

    6. 黃耀明 - King of the Road (Hong Kong, EEG)

    7. 何超儀 - Elastic Rock (Hong Kong, Wow Music)
I wasnt expecting this to be good when i found out it's a mandarin album, but it's not bad at all. 3 of the songs were adapted from "Hell's Kitchen", which is not as many as i expected. The new madarin lyrics fits the music alright so it dosent sound bizarre. The new songs are pretty much in the vein of the last album, that Teresa Teng cover is fuckin' awesome!

    8. 方大同 - 未來 (Hong Kong, Warner Music)
Nowhere as good as "This Love", but it's still far superior than all other Chinese R&B singers.

    9. 左小祖咒 - 你知道东方在哪一边 (China, Self-Released)

    10. 新裤子 - 野人也有爱 (China, Modern Sky Records)

    1. 劉以達 - 十年 (Hong Kong, iMusic)
Oh well, so he wants to do a pop album, but his whole idea about pop music is completely out of date and wrong. He have also lose his ability of writing killer melodies, so the album is an epic fail. He tried pretty hard to sell out in the last 2-3 years without realizing the fact that it might sell way better if he actually do another album in the vein of "Paralysis" or "Underwater Fairyland" (even if not as good as those 2) with the whole indie movement going on, good on you uncle Tats...

    2. 謝安琪 - Binary (Hong Kong, Universal Music)
She started to get all those hypes from music critics since she got signed by Universal last year, but her output since that just simply sucks... She released 2 "best of" CDs last year when she've only released one full-length and one ep before that, and the new full-length this year is also pretty weak. The first 2 songs are your typical cantonpop ballads, which is actually quality stuff. With the rest of the album she's still trying to deliver the grassroots themes as she did in the first 2 releases, but the music is much weaker and boring, too much programming crap compared to the band and organic sound in "Kay One". I've always been curious about this: what were all those music critics doing when "Kay One" just came out on a tiny indie label?!

C: ACG-related singles of the year:

    2. THYME - Forever We Can Make It! (To Love る, Geneon Music)
