  • A Metric Ton

    Jun 13 2009, 22h24

    Thu 11 Jun – Metric

First off, the openers: Smile Smile, and Sebastien Grainger and his band. Smile Smile has a nice indie pop/folk vibe about them. Some catchy pop-folk songs in their set, and they were done.

Next up was Sebastien Grainger and his band. I wish I could've seen him in his Death From Above 1979 days, but this is as close as I was going to get to seeing him perform live. The guy knows how to rock. Kudos to Grainger for hoping down off the stage to co-mingle with the people up at the front. The bass player looked like he could've been cast in Dazed And Confused.

Finally, Metric. Most of the songs were from the latest album, with a selection of Live It Out coming in second, and a few older songs near the end of the set. Emily did all the things that make a concert great: encouraging the audience to sing along, asking the audience to get out he lighters, moving around on the stage and not tied to the keyboard, and having some cool light effects.

An excellent show from all the openers to the headline act.

  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs new single, Zero

    Fev 23 2009, 6h41

Damn, I love me some synths. I really like the YYYs music. Combine the two, and I think this will be a release day purchase of their new album due out on April 14th.

Oh, hit up The Underwire for a link to IMEEM's streaming player to listen to TocarZero.

  • Submarines are good indie pop

    Fev 21 2009, 9h09

Fri 20 Feb – Morning Benders w/ the Submarines

After hearing Honeysuckle Weeks just a few days before, I decided to see 'em at the Hi-Dive, and I'm glad I did! They played most of the stuff off of the latest album, with a few songs from the older album thrown in.

  • Bombed on the Radio

    Nov 3 2008, 8h15

Sun 2 Nov – TV on the Radio, The Dirtbombs

The opener, The Dirtbombs, rocked hard. I had never heard them before, and during the intermission between them and TVOTR, I picked up their double CD album, If You Don't Already Have a Look. Great to see such a unique line-up: two drummers, and two bass players, with Mick Collins doing lead vocals and lead guitar.

TV on the Radio delivered with a great set: Wolf Like Me, TocarDirtywhirl, TocarHalfway Home, TocarDancing Choose, TocarDLZ, TocarLove Dog, TocarGolden Age, TocarShout Me Out, A Method, and Let the Devil In. The Dirtbombs came out on stage to join TVOTR for A Method.

Awesome show. I can't wait to see TVOTR or The Dirtbombs roll through Denver in the future.

  • Deerhoof leaves a footprint at the Bluebird

    Out 12 2008, 18h35

Sat 11 Oct – Deerhoof, Experimental Dental School, Coconut

One year ago, I went to my first Deerhoof concert at the Bluebird. One year later, and they're back playing at the Bluebird again! The weather wasn't quite as nice this time, but at least it wasn't snowing.

Satomi Matsuzaki has certain hand gestures and mannerisms I noticed from the last concert, I guess it's her trademark by this point. Greg Saunier has an intensity on drums that I've seen few match. The guy just convulses with spasms of raw energy one moment and then a restrained demeanor the next. Great set, and a good encore.

  • Ladytron tears it up at the Gothic

    Jun 4 2008, 8h04

    Tue 3 Jun – Ladytron

Ladytron delivered a good mix of their new album, Velocifero, as well as their older albums: Light & Magic, Witching Hour, and 604. Opening for them was Datarock.

I have to give it to Datarock. Not only did the matching red hoodie jumpsuits give them an 80's feel, they paid a complete homage to the 80's; hell, they even had video clips of Molly Ringwald up on the screen. Great opener, and definitely a group I'll be listening to in the near future.

Let's see.... Ladytron did at least the following tracks off their new album:

TocarBlack Cat, TocarGhosts, TocarRunaway, TocarSeason of Illusions, TocarBurning Up, TocarKletva, and TocarDeep Blue.

More than half of their new album was on the set list last night! The finale was TocarDestroy Everything You Touch, as expected. I tend to think of that as their marquee song from Witching Hour. Great show.

  • Show Mann: Christmas Show an awesome mix of music, comed

    Dez 11 2007, 14h40

Sat 8 Dec – Aimee Mann's 2nd Annual Christmas Show

As a fan of Aimee Mann's music, I was expecting her to do mostly songs off of her Christmas album released last year. In that respect, I was correct.

I didn't know, however, that she'd have three short film segments detailing her quest to get celebrities to join her Christmas show shot in a quasi-documentary style, and mostly with a farcical grin to the audience. You had Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Paul F. Tompkins (who was the co-host/guest of the Christmas show), and others. You also had "Tha Motherfuckin' Hanukkah Fairy", rapping about how Hanukkah came about; classic stuff.

Finally, Aimee gave a preview of one of her songs from her album coming out in March of 2008.

  • Deerhoof at the Bluebird

    Out 7 2007, 20h03

    Thu 4 Oct – Deerhoof

A former coworker and acquaintance of mine and I attended the Deerhoof concert on Thursday. I had boned up on some of their work before attending, so I wasn't totally in the dark. The drummer had an intensity second to none. The set was probably about an hour long or so, and the songs seemed to be spread across their latest album and a few earlier ones.

A video of their opening song:

  • Claypool gives outstanding performance at the Ogden

    Jun 24 2007, 2h40

Fri 22 Jun – Les Claypool, Two Gallants

Les Claypool again showcased his masterful bass playing skills at the Ogden on Friday. I had seen him up at the Boulder Theatre last June. Compared to that concert, the audience seemed to be more excited this time around. Once again, his supporting band featured a drum player, a drum player / xylophonist, a sitar player, and a saxophonist.

Halfway through, Claypool comes out with the pig mask, then follows it up with the monkey mask (and his two children wearing masks as well), and finally the Elvis mask. All classic Claypool.

The guy continues to amaze, and even though the set list was similar to the Boulder concert last year, there was enough freestyle jamming and a few different songs to warrant the price of admission.

    4 out of 4 stars

  • Veruca Salt and Charlotte Martin at The Walnut Room

    Abr 7 2007, 22h18

Veruca Salt and Charlotte Martin were the main acts with Poets & Pornstars as the opener.

I gotta say, Louise has taken VS in a harder direction than her former bandmate, Nina Gordon. Great show. The Walnut Room has a killer sound.
