The most brilliant man on earth

Wed 9 Jul – John Mayer, Colbie Caillat, Brett Dennen

Since my friend and I were traveling out of state to see the concert, we missed some of the beginning acts. We actually got in during Colbie Caillet's Realize because the stupid purse checker thought that my camera was a professional one, which it most definitely isn't, but she made me go back to the car and put it away. How stupid is that? Instead of going to our seats, we toured the sponsors and bought our t-shirts. That was the worst part about the whole show: there were like, three people working the whole merchandise stand and a huge crowd. They sold out of the shirt that I wanted, but that's okay; I just got the green one instead of the purple.

We made it back to our seats just in time. I think we were at our seats like, five minutes before John Mayer started. We had pretty decent seats on the left side, but nothing like I had at the Meadows where I was ten rows back. We were about thirty rows back from the stage.

With a black longsleeves shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, olive-y cargo pants, and a gold-ish guitar, JM opens with Bigger Than My Body. From the start, John is on top of his game. I've heard BTMB at least two other times, and this time was definitely the best that I have ever heard it played. He then switches to his "inkstain" guitar, as I like to call the coloring of it. And he plays Vultures. I loved this song and every song, actually. He changes guitars again to a redwood archtop acoustic guitar (looks kinda like a violin) to play Crossroads. I've never heard Crossroads at a concert before, and it was phenomenal. Then, it starts to pour, again. And John says "Is it raining again?", laughs, tuns his guitar and goes into Covered in Rain. I LOVE COVERED IN RAIN. I hope I have the order of the setlist right, but I'm really sorry if I mix up a few of the songs. Then comes Good Love Is On The Way, followed by I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You). I've seen both of these songs performed as well, but none of them had the energy that he had last night. Then, he talks to the crowd, asking for a song that they want to hear. he says, "Now, I'm sure that if someone yelled out Your Body Is A Wonderland, they would immediately be shot. 'Your Body Is A Wonder (fades) … *shooting sound effect, followed by a laugh*." Belief is played next, I believe. Belief seems to have become a staple in his setlist. I think at this point, his band guitarist is playing a clear-bodied guitar, which stumped me for a while. I wondered how the man's blazer had gotten stuck on the guitar like that, but the body of the guitar was clear! He talked some about the tri-state area and how "What? have you heard about the Flordia, Texas, somewhere else tri-state area? Fuck no! Cause there isn't one! We live in the ONLY tri-state area!"He gave the band a break and covered Tom Petty's Free Falling, which was slower than Tom Petty's version, and in my opinion, much better. The he played No Such Thing which I absolutely adore, into Why Georgia. In between the songs, after "I am invincible, you are invincible …" he tells a short story about his mother and his brother and their guitars, then invites his brother onto the stage to play Why Georgia. It was the cutest thing ever. At one point, only Carl is playing the guitar and John's just standing there, smiling at him. Awwww, brotherly love. Then, he plays Stitched Up, which he very rarely plays and it's such an amazing song live. After, he makes a toast and plays Say. I don't think my smile could have been any bigger than it was. I WORSHIP that song, as everyone knows who calls me and hears my ringtone.

There's roughly a three minute encore before he's back on the stage, playing Man On The Side. He plays a bit of Slow Dancing in a Burning Room in it. Then there's I'm Gonna Find Another You. Love that song. Then he goes into some more chatting, "You know, it kinda goes like this … You slam your keys down on the table … Man, I loved her … Am i ever going to live somewhere fully furnished? … John Mayer is a douchebag!" before he goes into Gravity. Then, he talks about the controversy around Waiting. "You know, the controversy has to do with the first line. Me and all my friends … Wait, John, you have friends? yeah, we'll they're right here. I decided to give you a visual so you know what I mean when I sing that line." And his friends all come out onto the stage to sing backup. "Me and all these assholes," John starts with, laughing. After Waiting on the World to Change, the show is over and we drive 2 hours to get home. That has to be the best setlist I have ever heard and the most energy and enthusiasm out of John I have ever seen. He just continues to amaze me.

I fell asleep to Death Cab For Cutie's Narrow Stairs.
