Transit Kings

I just received the new album from The Transit Kings, entitled Living In A Giant Candle Winking At God as a Christmas present. I have had a difficult time not listening to this album. I find myself wanting to go back to time after time. I have so much other new music I want to listen to I have to force myself to skip this album each time the opportunity comes up. So as of right now I've listened to it six times now after only having it for a day or so. The sounds are so original and eclectic that it excites me every time I listen to it. I get energized to discover new and exciting aspects of each track that I missed before. While the album was released in August, I know I am only getting to it just now. Fortunately, I added it to my wish list on Amazon, so it finally showed up. I guess it does not really count if you buy it for yourself though.

Anyway, initially I was only interested in the album because it was done by Alex Patterson, which was enough for me. The project consists of; Alex Paterson from The Orb and Jimmy Cauty from The KLF, Guy Pratt (long time post-Waters Pink Floyd bassist, occasional Orb contributor and renowned session player) and Dom Beken (programmer/producer, Orb contributor and long time collaborator and assistant to Guy). Other contributors include Johnny Marr (The Smiths) and Simon Day (The Fast Show). Working outside the major label system, these guys, normally accustomed to working with names such as Basement Jaxx and Moby joined the Transits to help create a sound which finally crosses the boundaries between dance, ambient and rock.

The Japanese version track listing:

1 The West End Of A Duck Going East (6:11)
2 Stop Over (Dance With Me) (0:09)
3 Concourse (7:16)
4 Boom (Bombay) (5:42)
5 Oh Shit (4:02)
6 Baby Don't (5:16)
7 Japanese Cars (Album Mix) (4:55)
8 Free Free (8:07)
9 Blooze Tracks (5:18)
10 America is Unavailable (Album Mix) (5:21)
11 Wagon Wheels (6:05)
12 The Last Lighthouse Keeper (6:40)
13 Butterflies (4:31)
14 America is Unavailable (SSS Ding Dong Mix) (4:41)

I sprung for the Japanese version which includes two additional tracks; Butterflies, and America is Unavailable (SSS Ding Dong Mix). Considering it was triple the price for the US version I think it was worth every additional penny. The two additional tracks add about nine more minutes of listening time. My current favorite track is Wagon Wheels. I don't think you'll be disappointed by any of the tracks. If you like The Orb, you will like this album.

The official website, http://www.transitkings.com includes several podcasts, which are interesting. You may want to check those out before making a purchase.

Last.fm annoyingly insists upon changing the artist name to all uppercase letters. This really gets old. I could not figure out a way to change it through the Wiki. Interestingly enough, Transit Kings briefly experimented with the name Custerd.
