A Certain Romance

This is the song that sets them apart from everyone else. It's a modern classic. I won't pretend I've got a clue what the lyrics are on about, it's certainly not a world I'm a part of, but the presentation makes it fascinating... from a distance.

Some of my favourite lyrics:

"But all of that's what the point is not
The point's that there ain't no romance around there"
(love the Yoda-esque syntax ;)

"And it don't take no Sherlock Holmes
To see it's a little different around here"

"And just cause he's had a couple of cans
He thinks it's alright to act like a dickhead"

"Don't you know, oh it's a funny thing you know"

"Well over there there's friends of mine
What can I say, I've known 'em for a long long time
And yeah they might overstep the line
But I just cannot get angry in the same way"
(aka some people can't help being rubbish but there's no point getting angry about it)

Well let's face it I just love the whole ending of this song.

There's nothing clever about "No! Oh no!/ Well you won't get me to go!/ Not anywhere, not anywhere/ No I won't go/ Oh no no!" but it's sung in such a cool, anthem-y way that it's one of the many parts of the song I look forward to.

Before you even get to the lyrics, I love how this song has about 3 different introductions before the singing starts. First there's the cool drummy bit, then the loud guitary bit, then there's the quiet bass/guitary bit, and then there's the bit right before the vocals come in where it all comes together (that I reckon sounds a bit like the theme tune to that old children's tv classic Pigeon Street. No, I'm not drunk).

This song is like a 3-for-the-price-of-1 deal. One minute you're dancing like a mad thing, the next minute you're belting out loud social commentary lyrics in your worst Sheffield accent, and finally it settles you into a beautiful calming lullaby. Go and get a drink and sit down for a while.

Oh and the arrangement and lyrics on the album version are slightly different to the demo version but I got used to it and now I love them both!
