Yooooooda!

Sat 24 May – DJ Yoda, DJ Kormac, Optimo DJs, SHOCK DJS

I wasn't sure what to expect, only having heard DJ Yoda's MySpace tracks before, but a DJ friend had recommended him, saying that Yoda's a god to him… so I had to see if he was exaggerating. Nope.

The first DJ, was pretty good, and he seemed to have modeled himself on Yoda given his choice of material - lots of 50s and 70s numbers - and in our ignorance my friend and I wondered if this was Yoda… ha! as if. Yes his material was good, but he didn't keep it up tempo enough, and there were a few longueurs where you were still dancing but thinking 'yeah yeah, get on with it'… Needless to say, when Yoda started there couldn't have been more of a difference, and the crowd went ballistic. Feckin' fantastic.

My (young) friend needed to keep nipping out for a breather, and having elected to stay at the back sadly left before the end, whereas I, rockin' grandma that I am (not literally, but surely the oldest one there…), wanted as usual to be right up at the front where all the action was.

So I struggled back up to beside the right speaker where there was the odd inch or two in between the heaving masses of hot and sweaty bodies, and I danced like a lunatic for the whole show. You just can't stop - he paces it exactly right: up tempo followed by something slightly more chilled out, then a frenetic number, and always accompanied by the fascinating, meticulously synchronised and hilarious visuals. The man's a genius, no question.

He was obviously having a whale of a time too - smiling and laughing all the way through, while constantly gauging the crowd response, which was invariably ecstatic. He say 'jump' and we all shriek 'how high, massa?'!

Both DJs did a long set, the first guy (sorry can't remember his name) did the guts of two hours, and Yoda's set was a good 90 mins.

My only gripe was that the bigger venue at the Pod would have been so much better - no need for that little cramped room for such a class act as that.

Still, it was the best night of dancing I can remember since, ooh, since most of you weren't even a twinkle. ;)
