Also Heathen by Bowie is a very good album - I see you have been listening to it. The song "Slow Burn" is brilliant. In fact, the first six tracks are pretty much gold, not least for the fact that he covers (a) the Pixies and (b) Neil Young.

I feel I must inform you that I have just been watching Rage guest programmed by... Bret Easton Ellis. I HAD TO KILL A LOT OF PEOPLE.

I do listen to female artists/bands featuring female singers - e.g. Feist, Portishead, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bat for Lashes... admittedly not in the same quantities as male ones though. I guess the problem with Out of Time is that for every amazing song there is something really, really bad. On average it's a mediocre album as a result.

And, while I'm at it, have you acquired and devoured Scary Monsters yet? I am increasingly of the view that it is Bowie's finest hour.

Also it has come to my attention that Country Feedback is an underrated alt-country classic which deserves credit for being ahead of its time. People such as Bonnie Prince Billy and Wilco owe Michael Stipe's brief rural phase a debt of gratitude. Also Half a World Away is pretty great.

Hmm, not sure about the National being the new REM. For one thing, REM are the new (and not as good) REM. For another, I see the National as more in the vein of L. Cohen or someone like that... moody, reflective, intense, anti-pop. Maybe even the new Radiohead. I was indeed going on some New Adventures recently, damn that's a good album. Even the weaker songs are eggshellent. I was thinking of you the other day as I was listening to a dub-ly digital 5.1 version of Up that I have, which is also rather good. As far as I can tell the whole band is at the front of the soundstage, apart from the guy playing bongos who stands behind you and comes out the rear speakers. So every now and then there is a weird bongoing from behind the couch. It's like REM in your house.

We went to Spoon last night, it was most triumphant. I see you are in the depths of Belle & Sebastian addiction, it's a good place to be. Actually Sukie in the Graveyard kinda sounds like Bowie, possibly deliberately.

Are you okay Bowie? What was that sound? I don't know man, I'll have to turn my ship around

I do not believe we will get Eddie Van Halen until we have a triumphant video.

New REM still does not suck, which I find pleasantly surprising.
