Ramblin' On My Mind

Because I have literally nothing else to write about. I will have a cool essay soon, I promise!

(The format for this entry was stolen from MetallicaACDC.)

1. I've been listening to my Ramones records a lot. A lot a lot. In the past month they've gone from around number 25 to number 12 on my charts. If this keeps up they might even get into the top 10! That doesn't bother me, because I LOVE the Ramones and I think they are the greatest punk rock band ever. The only problem I have is that I'm worried I will burn out on them, like I did with The Beatles for a while.

2. For the longest time, I used to hate Bob Dylan's album Blood On The Tracks and I had no idea why everyone said it was their favorite. But I was listening to it one dark night and everything just clicked. All of the songs are just beautiful, and as cheesy as this sounds, they deep down into your soul. If you ever feel like complete shit, listen to that record.

3. Which song is better? Mother by John Lennon, Mother by Pink Floyd, or Mother by Danzig. I don't know. Danzig's "Mother" is really fun to play on guitar though. It's like three chords for the whole song!

4. Speaking of Pink Floyd, I haven't really listened to them much lately. Their albums sort of lost the touch they had on me just a few years ago. I don't really know why. I guess I'm just gravitating toward punk and I can't pay attention to that long, drawn out kind of music anymore.

5. Last.fm's tags are really, really bad. If you go to the Buzzcocks page, for example, you'll notice the song Orgasm Addict is #1. But if all the different names for Ever Fallen In Love? were combined into one, it would be far ahead of "Orgasm Addict".

6. New Artists I've Gotten Into Recently:

The White Stripes: These guys (or rather, this guy and this girl) kick ass. I love the whole garage rock sound, but the Stripes are a lot more creative and catchy than most garage bands. Their album Icky Thump is really amazing: it's got Zeppelin-inspired riffs, a take on Celtic music, a really weird cover of a country song called Conquest (with trumpets!), novelty music, wonderful pop music, and this blues song that changes its style about 5 times throughout the song. Awesome. (Meg White still can't play the drums, though. I could play better than her with a bit of practice, and I don't play the drums at all.)

Foo Fighters: I don't know how I've ignored this band for so long considering I've known about them for ages. Sure, it's basically slightly grungy stadium rock, but Dave Grohl's talent and passion shines through on every song. Right now all I have is The Colour And The Shape, which has a lot of their best songs on it. My favorite right now is Everlong, but I like a lot of the other songs too.

Robert Johnson: The king of the delta blues singers. The godfather of rock n' roll. The man who supposedly sold his soul to the devil for his extraordinary guitar skills. The guy Eric Clapton is obsessed with. A lot has been said about Robert Johnson, but when it all comes down to it his music is wonderful. Sure, the sound quality sucks, but looking past that you can hear some of the most emotional blues songs ever put on tape. Like so many great songwriters, Robert Johnson's music resonates with you, and shows you how to feel (as opposed to telling you what to feel, which some songwriters do). At first, I could barely listen to the stuff because it was so intense, and because the sound quality really got to me. But after a while I've really grown to like this music. And the guy was incredible at the guitar! He could play a rhythm on one part of the neck and play a slide melody on another part. Amazing.

The Stooges: The Stooges may very well be the heart and soul of rock n' roll. (That might make a very good song lyric.) Iggy Pop was the craziest singer of his time, and what really set him apart from somebody like Alice Cooper was the fact that Iggy really meant what he was doing. There was no act to The Stooges, everything they did was done with heartfelt intent. So it's kind of scary to listen to them on record for the first time, even though they influenced pretty much every punk band there is (and probably more than a few heavy metal and grunge bands). And the music is flat-out awesome. I only have the album Raw Power, but it's already brought The Stooges into my top 50. I don't really know how to explain it. It just rocks out, and doesn't hold anything back. And Search and Destroy is one of the best rock songs ever.

7. Bands that I'm trying to get out of my Top 50:

Dashboard Confessional
Porcupine Tree
Dire Straits
Lynyrd Skynyrd (meh. Not sure about this one.)
Evanescence
Coldplay
Wolfmother
Black Sabbath

Basically, a bunch of bands that I used to like but don't really listen to much anymore. Of course, I could always cheat and get the artists I want into my top 50 without actually listening to them, but that's kind of pointless.
