There are countless tales of the fateful Saturday at Sasquatch. Mine is one of them:

I was outfitted for the festival (quite smartly, I think) in a black cowboy shirt and aviator glasses. By chance I was standing around in the pit between acts while this group of underaged kids were mixing rum and Cokes. One of them happened to glance up at me and shouted "Oh shit! Five-oh!" … except that he got his pop culture reference wrong and referred to me as four-oh. I guess that makes me malt liquor.

Then there's the fact that while the day started out cool and clear, it quickly turned hot and cloudy, then the thunderheads rolled in around 6pm as Neko Case took the stage. Not being a big fan, I headed over to the beer shack for some suds. On the way, it started to hail. I found all this amusing until 80 other people were crowded around me under the 10 foot long overhang, my shoes swamped by a rivulet of ice cold rain water hail slosh. Anyhow, as we huddled about I was chatted up by this drunk Canadian. To break the ice (literally and figuratively) her friend asked if I wanted a beer. I obliged and the beerwench asked to see my wristband. Having not gotten one when coming into The Gorge, I offered my ID instead. She said she couldn't beer me if I hadn't verified being over 21 upon entry. With that, a chorus of cries erupted: "Just LOOK at him! He's OLD!"

I got my beer.

Oh yeah … I saw Iron & Wine too. Sam's sister Sarah sang along for much of the gig, the performance blending the feel of his earlier work with that of the Iron & Wine | Calexico collaboration. Sodom, South Georgia was my first introduction to Iron & Wine, and I was stoked to hear it played live (Sam's prefacing of the song as being "about Whitey" was met with much delight by all). As subdued as was the delivery of Woman King, the band went full-bore on Jezebel, so much so that Sam ended up wailing a bit off key toward the end. The real treat of the show, though, was The Trapeze Swinger, especially as the soundtrack version comes off as rather overproduced for my taste.

Enjoy the recording below, but a couple disclaimers: first, my recorder had a bug so a very quiet but constant popping shows up in the recording, especially in the right channel. Second, as this is an audience recording at an amphitheatre, the sound's a bit flatter than I'd prefer. Tweak your equalizer a bit and you should be all set.
