A less than Stellar Anathema Show

I have seen these guys many, many times and I adore their latest album, but in my opinion at least, last night's show was not their best and overall one of the less satisfying shows I've seen from them. The singing was a bit off at times and the delivery of Universal and Hindsight was anything but a climactic ending to their presentation of the We're Here Because We're Here album.

However, when they got things together, they were still exceptional. Deep, Forgotten Hopes, Flying and in particular Closer were excellent, but usual favourites like Fragile Dreams didn't quite hit the spot for me - though I'd have to say that I was probably in a minority in thinking that. Ditto for One Last Goodbye, where the crowd carried the song and took over the singing, yet, stuck away in the upper bar, unable to see anything, but at least away from the claustrophobia of the main hall, I just didn't feel the same emotion as the bulk of the crowd obviously did.

Anyway, I was really pleased to see that the show had sold out - if not 'over' sold as the number of people in the main room must have been breaking Health and Safety limits. Next time, they'll hopefully play somewhere bigger, where short-arses like me can hopefully both see and hear the band.

I disagree chazzyf. I think you needed to be closer to get the buzz. I thought it was their best performance out of the half dozen times I have seen them. Granted - Universal and Hindsight didn't quite come over well. But the appreciative crowd and their clear enjoyment in performing was infectious. Regards, Brian
