Picaresque has become one of my favourite albums ever. The Decemberists is a rather new acquaintance in music for me but already one of my favourite artists.
I have completely fallen in love with Colin Meloy's wonderful lyrics telling various stories in their songs. It is not a surprise that he had creative writing as a major. What fancies me greatly is using a lot of instruments and their sound having folk music feel.
One of the great things about Picaresque is, that it has many very good tracks and every one of them is great to listen. I think it is my favourite of all their albums.
The Infanta is the first song of the album and is same time kind of a funny and marvelous. Drums make the song sound faster and very flamboyant. The lyrics remind me somehow of Canticles from the Bible and the infanta is something messianic from beyond our world.
We Both Go Down Together is a really melancholic and tragic love story between an upper class gentleman and a labour family girl. Love brings pain to both of them and they end up killing themselves. I love how the violin enhances the sad atmosphere created by the lyrics.
Eli, the Barrow Boy, keeps up the tragic theme brought by the previous song. Eli is longing for her lost love trying to continue living. In this song Colin Meloy's singing is more central than in the other songs on the album, only acoustic guitar accompanying singing. I love to listen to this and We Both Go Down Together when I'm feeling blue and longing for someone.
The Sporting Life is energetic track with nice instruments but I can't say anything else. This is probably one of the tracks I have not yet been able to understand so I have not much to say.
The Bagman's Gambit starts slowly with only acoustic guitar accompanying Meloy's wonderous voice. Later, other instruments come into play to raise the atmosphere to hopeful and enthusiastic and later switching back to slower phase.
From My Own True Love(Lost at Sea) is another musical piece telling about longing after love. Tempo is slow and even though the song is about longing I don't particularly think it as a sad song. Would a mister postman bring me a letter also, plz?
16 Military Wives is a political song telling about consequences, reasons and ignorance in politics. Lyrics sometimes make me sing along (oh my god, how embarassing).
The Engine Driver is a wistful song with enchanting melody and touching lyrics. Background-singing and various instruments give just right touch to the track. I found the track in complete very harmonic and well-balanced switching smoothly from phase to another.
Three songs left are On the Bus Mall, The Mariner's Revenge Song and Of Angels and Angles. I'll continue later...
