  • Questions about my top 50, v.2.

    Jul 3 2008, 8h25

    01. What's your favorite song by 15?
Blake Lewis: She's Makin' Me Lose It. It reminds me of Darren Hayes and/or Prince.

    02. How did you get into 20?
98 Degrees: Oh, I have no idea. I probably saw them on tv or something. They're my favorite American boy band, without a doubt.

    03. Who is your favorite member in 1?
Darren Hayes: Well, it's just him.

    04. Whats your favorite lyric bit by 29?
Sophie Ellis-Bextor: Though I'm fool enough to love when you don't want me, I'm wise enough to know that you will always haunt me.

    05. Have you ever seen 22 live?
Avenue Q/Avenue Q: Unfortunately, no. I hope it doesn't close any time soon. :(

    06. What's your favorite album from 10?
Fall Out Boy: From Under the Cork Tree.

    07. Do you own any merchandise from 3?
Brandi Carlile: No! I should get some if I ever get some money.

    08. What is a good memory you have of 7?
My Chemical Romance: Seeing them twice, once the first time I went to Warped and once during their headlining tour... They're awesome live.

    09. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2?
Clay Aiken: It's just him, and he's nine years older than me. So no.

    10. When did you first get into 8?

    11. Who likes 4 along with you?
Westlife: Uh, not many people. Marcy likes a few songs. Vern claims to like them but she says that about a lot of people when she's only heard like one song. I'm sort of alone on this one. And many others.

    12. Which song did you first hear from 16?
Backstreet Boys: Quit Playing Games With My Heart. I heard it for the first time on the radio in my dad's truck, and he didn't think I should listen to them because they sounded like they were black. :/

    13. What song made you fall in love with 5?
Savage Garden: Truly Madly Deeply, waaay back in the day.

    14. Which song do you not like by 18?

    15. Why do like 14's songs?
Rufus Wainwright: I'm not sure. I actually find his voice to be a bit grating at times. I usually like the big ones... like Slideshow. His music is just unique and pleasant.

    16. Where did you first hear 6?
Jimmy Eat World: No idea. Probably on the radio?

    17. How long was 19 a singer before you liked them?
Michael Buble: Quite a while. I was slow on the uptake with this one.

    18. Does 13 have a song that gives you a bad memory?
The Spill Canvas: A lot of their songs make me kind of depressed. Does that count?

    19. When did you get into 17?
Gavin Mikhail: A few years ago... Some random person sent me a message on myspace saying to check him out because I was a fan of Clay Aiken. I'm normally opposed to advertising like that, but they played the Clay card, so I gave it a chance. Turns out he's amazing.

    20. How long have you been into 9?
Bare: Not that long. Torrey got me into it.

    21. If 11 had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them?
Rent/Rent: If it was the tour with Adam and Anthony, absolutely. Otherwise, no... I've seen it twice already.

    Hairspray: One, the OBCR.

Panic! at the Disco: I think Pas de Cheval.

    27. Is there a song by 32 that you've listened to more than 30 times?

    28. What is a song from 50 that you've only listened to once?
    Jack's Mannequin: There aren't any.

    29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by 24?
Ani DiFranco: Not really. There are some I don't like much, but I don't hear them enough to be sick of them.

    30. What song got you into 40?
    Scissor Sisters: Filthy/Gorgeous.

    31. What is your favorite single by 25?
    Matchbox Twenty: Back 2 Good.

    32. If 49 hated you, what would you do?

    The Rocket Summer: None, actually.

    39. Is there a song from 38 that makes you mad?
    Rihanna: Nope.

    40. Which member from 31 do you want to see go solo? If 31 is only one artist, what would you do if they joined a group?
Keane: I wouldn't really care, I guess... As long as my hobbity friend isn't replaced.

    41. What does your favorite song from 48 remind you of?
Wicked: As Long As You're Mine... Well. Let's not go there.

    42. Did you hate 43 at first?
Delta Goodrem: Nope. I liked her right away.

    43. Does your best friend also listen to 33?
Robbie Williams: No, none of my friends do.

    44. Do you think your parents would like 37?
Enrique Iglesias: Well, my mom thinks he's good-looking, but that's about it. I would imagine my parents are sick of hearing him, even though I haven't listened to him out loud at home in years.

    45. Does 47 have a song that makes you want to dance?
    Thursday: No, not really.

    46. Have you ever seen 34 in person?

    47. Do you like 44's name?
Death Cab for Cutie: I don't really have an opinion either way.

    48. Is there someone in 45 that you want to go out with?
The Fratellis: I'd take any of them, even if it's just for an excuse to relocate to Scotland.

    49. Do you know anyone that hates 39?
Placebo: No, not that I can think of.

    50. Have you ever danced to a song from 35?

  • We sure are in for a show tonight!

    Mai 3 2008, 3h25

Wed 30 Apr – Phantom Planet, Motion City Soundtrack, Panic at the Disco, The Hush Sound

I saw Phantom Planet, The Hush Sound, Motion City Soundtrack, and Panic! at the Disco the other day... I guess it was the Honda Civic tour. Actually, saying I saw Phantom Planet is misleading, because we missed them. We found the venue with no problem but we couldn't find parking, and all the streets were one way, and we suddenly found ourselves half an hour outside the city. We ended up being like 45 minutes late.

We got there halfway through The Hush Sound's set, but what I saw of it was pretty good. I'm not really a huge fan; the only song of theirs I actually know is Wine Red, and that's only because it was on the Snakes on a Plane soundtrack. :P

Motion City Soundtrack was up next, and they were good, but it was no surprise because I've seen them before. It would have been better if I was more familiar with their newer songs, but I still knew like three quarters of them.

Then, Panic at the Disco. (You see what I did there? I tagged it both ways. Smart, huh? For the record, I refuse to remove the ! because it'll mess up my charts.) I was really skeptical about seeing them... some people say they're really good live, and a lot more people say they suck, but I haven't really been taking anyone's word on it because people seem to love or hate them passionately. And the crowd was INSANE. They really are the new boyband. I felt old there, and I'm only 21. :P

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised. They were really, really good. One of the better shows I've seen, actually. It was a bit too gimmicky for my tastes, with the elaborate flowery sets and all, but their playing and singing was great, and they put on a great show, so I'll let it go. The best song in my opinion was I Constantly Thank God for Esteban, hence the journal title. And Time to Dance was really good too... he did an acoustic version with just him and the guitar, and had the crowd sing the keyboard part. :P

Overall, it was a great show... no complaints from me. :D

Thu 24 Apr – Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, Dear and the Headlights

So. I saw Jimmy Eat World at Bloomsburg University on April 24. With Paramore and Dear and the Headlights, but obviously they were not at all important. :D

Dear and the Headlights opened... I don't really recall a whole lot about their songs. They didn't sound bad, but I didn't know any of them, so I mostly made fun of people with my friend and whined about how hot it was during their set. :P

Paramore was pretty good. I don't know a whole lot of their music either, but they did pretty much every song of theirs that I know... which would be For a Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic (my favorite), Born for This, Misery Business, crushcrushcrush, and Pressure. I thought they sort of lacked stage presence... she mostly just stood there and whipped her very orange hair around. They apparently did this cool backflippy trick in the middle of one song, but naturally I chose that exact moment to look away. >.<

Then. Jimmy Eat World. omfgyay. They were awesome. I figured they would be, and I was not disappointed. They did pretty much song I was hoping for (although I was hoping they would play every single song from their last three albums... lol). They opened with Big Casino and Sweetness, which was awesome... and they also did 23 (*dead*), Work (*dead again*), Futures, A Praise Chorus, Hear You Me, The Middle, Always Be, and Dizzy. Of course that is in no way comprehensive... there were a couple old ones that I'm familiar with but don't know by name, and there are some I forgot because I was rocking out too hard to make a note of it.

I also made a bit of eye contact with him... I was in the bleachers right beside the stage, and when they came out everyone around me stood up, but then gradually everyone sat down, but slowly so it took me a while to realize I was the only one left standing, and I wasn't about to sit down, because Jimmy is the best band ever. And he was talking or ending a song or something, and he said something and everyone cheered, and I did so obnoxiously and clapped with my hands in the air, and he looked at me and half-smiled. Heee. xD

So, to make a long story short... AWESOME.

  • What I listened to this year... cuz everybody's doing it.

    Dez 28 2007, 1h32

So, what did I listen to this year? I always find it hard to keep track, probably because of the school year ending at a different time than the real year ends... but luckily, last.fm has that nifty little rolling year chart now, so I can keep track.

    My top artists of 2007:
    1. Darren Hayes - 2,515
    2. Brandi Carlile - 871
    3. Savage Garden - 661
    4. Hairspray - 590
    5. Clay Aiken - 497
    6. Gavin Mikhail - 341
    7. Bare - 285
    8. Kyo - 273
    8. Rufus Wainwright - 273
    10. Maroon 5 - 272
    11. The Fratellis - 268
    12. High School Musical - 250
    13. Robbie Williams- 232
    14. Matchbox Twenty - 221
    15. 98 Degrees - 215

    Darren Hayes:
Well, this one's kind of a given. He's my favorite artist ever, and he had a new (totally amazing) album out this year, This Delicate Thing We've Made. I've been listening to it obsessively since August, so it's no suprise that he's my top artist for the year.

    Brandi Carlile:
I'm pretty sure I just discovered his this year... over the summer, I think, when I had nothing better to do than stay up till 6am watching VH1 and MTV. Of course she was never on MTV... she's far too good to be appealing to them. I heard The Story on VH1, but I've gone looking for more of her music since then, and that's not even my favorite anymore (that's probably Closer to You, Throw It All Away, or What Can I Say). I'd love to see her live sometime soon...

    Savage Garden:
Goes with Darren. I have so many variations of the Darren/Savage Garden playlist... lol

    Hairspray:
I saw it on Broadway back in 2003, and it was amazing, but I didn't really listen to most of the soundtrack that much, just a few songs. Then the movie came out. Now, not only do I listen to the soundtrack... I also have a Zac Efron problem. >.<

    Clay Aiken:
Well, it's Clay. He's one of my favorites, right up there with Darren... now he just needs to release some new stuff so I have a reason to obsess again.

    Gavin Mikhail:
I got a random message on myspace in the spring, saying that since I liked Clay, this person thought I would like Gavin Mikhail. I usually ignore those messages cuz I get them all the time, but since they played the Clay card, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and checked the guy out... and I'm so glad I did. This guy is made of win. I actually bought both of his albums. Like, with money. Who does that?

    Bare:
I got the bootleg version of this at the beginning of the year, but it was really crappy quality so I didn't listen to it much. Then at the end of October, they released a studio version of the soundtrack. So all of those plays are from the last month or so. haha.

    Kyo:
Sam introduced me to these guys. I can't speak French, but it doesn't matter. They're awesome.

    Rufus Wainwright:
I love Rufus all the time, and I really liked his new album. It was especially good for walking around campus last spring.

    Maroon 5:
The new album is great. Also good for walking around campus.

    The Fratellis:
Okay, I admit it. I discovered these guys through the iTunes commercial. But I listen to more than Flathead, so shut up. They're whole album is great, and I have some of their older stuff now, too.

    High School Musical:
I avoided it like the plague for a loooong time. Then a couple months ago, my roommates turned it on while I was in the room, and I got sucked in. I had been hating it on principle for a long time... and now that I've actually seen it, I can't. Because it's good. Especially the second one, when Zac actually sings. Oh, and I just bought HSM2 on dvd. How cool am I? :D

    Robbie Williams:
Loved Rudebox. All his older stuff too, but that one gets put on repeat a lot. Especially Lovelight

    Matchbox Twenty/98 Degrees:
Not very similar at all, but I'm combining them because they have the same story. They've been my two favorite bands since elementary school (along with Savage Garden and several other boybands, but those two were at the top) and I'm not gonna stop listening to them just because they're old or not "cool" anymore. If I gave even half a shit about that, I wouldn't be able to listen to most of the music I listen to the most. I do have respectable music... I just prefer the other stuff. ;)

Blake Lewis deserves a mention here too... His album is really new so it's not high on my charts yet, but it's awesome, and I'm sure it will be in my top 50 before too long.

    So, that's that, then. Happy 2008. :)
  • Concert survey.

    Dez 23 2007, 12h23

List your top 10 artists on Last.fm and if you've seen them live, note the number of times.

    1. Darren Hayes - four times
    2. Clay Aiken - six times
    3. My Chemical Romance - twice.
    4. Savage Garden - never :( but I've seen Darren do SG songs. :P
    5. Bright Eyes :(
    6. Brandi Carlile :( :(
    7. Westlife :(
    8. Bare - I'm seeing it in March!
    9. Hairspray - the show, once. the movie... heh.
    10. Fall Out Boy - never, and I was there. ugh.

How many of them have you seen?
Four out of ten. One of them I'm seeing soon, and one I was there but preoccupied. :P

Add the numbers up. How many shows is that in total?
    13 shows.

List any artist in your top 50 that you haven't seen and has split up/died/stopped making music.
Savage Garden split up, but Darren is kicking ass solo.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch isn't running anywhere, as far as I know.
    NSYNC isn't doing anything. :(

List any artist in your top 50 you haven't seen yet but probably will or would like to.
Brandi Carlile - I'm going to see her and that's it. Big lesbian party, here I come.
Aida, Avenue Q, and Wicked - I'm sure I'll see them at some point. New York's not that far.
Gavin Mikhail - He's supposed to be coming here soon.

    How many?
That's five, but none of those are definite.

Which other artists out of your top 50 have you seen live?
Rent - twice (tour and Broadway)
    98 Degrees - once. hehe
    Against Me! - once
    The Academy Is... - once
    The Spill Canvas - once
    Thursday - once
    New Found Glory - once

Are there any artists in your top 50 that you wish weren't there?
Dashboard Confessional and AFI could be knocked down a bit. I tend go on certain artist kicks and then they move up my charts a lot. I wish Bright Eyes and Fall Out Boy were lower too, but I still listen to and like them a lot.

Is your most played song by your most played artist?
No. Love of My Life by Lucas Prata is my most played song by a long shot. He's not even in my top 50. lol
  • Holy shit, I love that man. (Rambling Darren story)

    Dez 10 2007, 7h35

As you my have already noticed, my picture is Darren Hayes and me together. I'd like to recap on the past week of my life, leading up to this momentous occasion.

Last Tuesday, Nov. 27... he did a signing and acoustic set at Borders in NYC. Naturally, I was all over that. We got there early enough that there wasn't a whole lot of people there, but late enough that we were nowhere near the front of the line. He came out and sang a few songs... "The Only One", a cover of "Gimme More" and an impersonation of Britney Spears (which was hilarious), "On The Verge Of Something Wonderful", "Unlovable", "Casey"... and maybe a few more, I don't remember. He was amazing, as always... but that's not surprise.

After the singing, he started the signing... We weren't terribly close to the front of the line, but people had pushed forward, so I ended up cutting in line in front of somebody. lol. He was pretty impressed with my fuzzy cd (the deluxe edition), and because of that, we had something to talk about. It was lovely. I was totally cool talking to him, but as soon as I walked away I had a panic attack and had to go outside and freak out. hahaha.

So a week goes by, and I'm thinking, that was the best thing EVER. I waited a decade, and I finally got to talk to the guy. Then that next Tuesday, Dec. 4th, was the acoustic show in Philadelphia. I didn't get to meet him afterwards (although we did wait) but he was AMAZING. It had only been a week since I'd last seen him... you wouldn't think I could forget so easily. He's so good live. Like, perfect. He couldn't possibly be any better. He did so many songs... after about an hour he said it was the point when he usually did his encore, but he didn't feel like going off stage, so we should pretend, and we all cheered, and he said to Steve, "I think they want us to come back out!", and he did another song... and then he did like ten more. hahaha. He sang for sooo long. Not that I'm complaining, it was fantastic. And we were soo close to the stage... we were at a table in the front row, one off from dead center. He was right in front of us the whole time, like ten feet away, tops. And towards the end he started undoing his tie and unbuttoning his shirt and stuff, and we were thinking, whooa what's going on here? lol... but then he did his faster stuff, including Me Myself And (I) and Popular... and during the second verse of Popular, I think the "I must confess, I've been a very bad boy" line, he pointed at me during his sexy dance... I pretty much died. We also made eye contact several times. That happened when I saw him in March too. That always makes me slightly giddy. :D

I got home at 3:30 in the morning, then had to be up at 8:30 to go to Washington, DC to see him again on Dec. 5th at the XM Radio thing that you had to win tickets to on myspace. I love myspace now. :D I got there fairly early and had to wait in the lobby with other people, but I didn't get a seat in the lobby with everyone else, I sat a bit down the hall, and I could see down the hallway where the others couldn't, and I saw Darren walk by a few times and had to try not to make a scene... haha. And then he was walking towards us, and the radio guy told him to wave to everyone, and he did, and he saw me and was like, "Hey, I remember you!" I wanted to say something witty, it was all there in my head, but of course I couldn't actually say anything to him... I just sort of gaped awkwardly at him and smiled. Haha.

The actual show... wow. He had headphones on because it was radio, and he said that when he sings with headphones he gets more into it... and he was amazing. He only did five songs (The Only One, On the Verge of Something Wonderful, Casey, Unlovable, and Truly Madly Deeply, but they were especially good, and singing Unlovable actually made him a bit choked up. And there were large interview segments in between, where he talked about all kinds of stuff... his dad, his sister, how he got signed with Savage Garden, how they made it internationally... it was really cool. He said all kinds of stuff I didn't know. Also, because of the headphones, he kept his eyes closed most of the time when he was singing... in fact, basically the whole time... except after the first line of Casey. He sang "driving in your car"... opened his eyes, looked right at me and smiled, I smiled back, and he closed them again. I have no idea what I did to deserve that... :D

Afterwards they said we could get pics with him, and I've never gotten my camera out of its bag so fast in my life. There were only 25 or so people there, and I was probably fourth... the publicist remembered me, and reintroduced me to Darren... he knew that he had seen me at the show the night before, and he asked where I lived, and we talked about Pittsburgh and Philadelphia (I live in Pennsylvania), and some other stuff... and I got a picture with him (and my sister but I've edited her out, hehe) and then left, cuz I didn't bring anything for him to sign and I felt stupid just hanging around, lol.

But omg. Best week of my life? Yesss.
